Programs that require endless obscure libraries are written by lazy and.or incompetent coders who do lego brick style programming. When the start they don't ask themselves "How can I code this?", they ask themselves "What libraries do this?" and what you end up with is a bit of glue code requiring a dozen obscure libraries just to play an mp3 or whatever.
"after moving from Slackware to Redhat to Fedora to Ubuntu,"
Slackware is very much install and go now. The days of recompiling the kernel or manually hacking xorg.conf files are long gone. Of course you can still do that if you want. I installed Slack 13.0 on 2 quite recent laptops and it Just Worked on both of them , including wifi.
You bought a crappy machine then. And you don't need to justify , but if you don't want comments that you might not like then don't post on a public forum. Perhaps there should be a "sycophants only reply" checkbox when someone creates a message?
Yeah , 2008 , thats like totally ancient dude. Not.
Christ , no wonder we have an electronics waste mountain and all its associated pollution issues when people like you bin perfectly servicable and upgradable machines.
He's a hypocrite because he's quite happy to throw out private government files into the public domain but when it comes to details about himself he'd rather keep quiet about its a different story. Google about his current spat with The Guardian newspaper.
He's someone who's obviously not prepared to eat your his dogfood and frankly to me he comes over as a petulant childish authority baiter who'll potentially risk people lives just so he can feel better about himself by sticking it to the man.
Only so that this gold plated hypocrite and his travelling circus become someone else's problem rather than wasting police and court time in the UK any longer. There is zero chance of the swedes extraditing him - if there was a good enough case the US would have applied to the UK for this - so his teenage fanboys can relax.
"Can anybody think of an explanation for how a hardware bug would cause behavior that gradually changes over time(in a manner that couldn't be dealt with with a driver update) that doesn't involve the alarming possibility of gradually increasing error rates and/or early death of onboard SATA ports?"
Failure to reset some internal timer properly under certain conditions? I'm guessing.
"To transport by train you have to load onto a truck, drive to the station, unload from the truck, load onto the train, take the train to the other end, unload from the train, load onto the truck, drive to where you want the shipment to go and then unload from the truck. That's generally slower than just taking it by truck,"
Depends on the distance. You could use the same argument against using shipping. In theory a truck could drive from Beijing to Europe.
Over distances greater than probably 400-500 miles the train wins when you take traffic issues and truck driver rest periods into account.
Thats what they were orignally built for. The only reason most goods go by road is cost. It would faily simple to have numerous rail hubs with goods being delivered the short distance to the shop/factory by small trucks instead of having 40 ton trucks driving all the way across the continent.
... is that people who can't be bothered to look after themselves and even wash are generally lazy and not really interested in details. Which arn't attributes you want in someone who has a load of confidential potentially life threatening documents in his possession.
Raise the minimum wage and watch even more low paid jobs head to china. Don't think it'll happen? Look where most of your clothes and electronics are made already. Thats not because the chinese are better at it. All we'll be left with is service industry jobs - ie burger flippers.
"The scheme, which aims to reach out to the 9.2 million adults that are not yet online, 4 million of whom are considered socially and economically disadvantaged"
Which bit of that is hard for you to work out - ie that there are 5.2 million who arn't disadvantaged but still arn't online, most likely because they don't want to. Can you do simple maths?
In the same way some people are happy without TV some don't care about the internet. My mother is one - she leads a perfectly happy and fulfilling life never using google or youtube etc even though she could easily afford a computer. Why do people think this is abnormal and there has to be "something done about it"? If you don't have to work from home over the internet then having internet access is merely a nice-to-have rather than an essential. I wish some people in the IT industry would understand this.
Heres a definition of evil by a proper dictionary , not some yank garbage. We're talking the proper definition of the word here, not the definition in your idiotic dialect.
I think you'll find its spelt "arsehole". HTH.

Theres a very noticable left wing bias at the BBC, especially on Radio 4. We need right wingers like murdoch to provide balance.
Or have I missed something?

"Or are you still using your old (insert whatever your first machine was here)? "
I've still got my 2nd PC from 1999 which is used as a file server.
"I've been here way longer than you."
Unlikely. This isn't my only id on here. I've been on this site for a loooong time.
"Who said he's throwing it away? Or even that he's replacing every part of it?"
Thats generally what "replacing my PC" implies assuming you have a reasonable understanding of the english language.
You bought a crappy machine then. And you don't need to justify , but if you don't want comments that you might not like then don't post on a public forum. Perhaps there should be a "sycophants only reply" checkbox when someone creates a message?

Yeah , 2008 , thats like totally ancient dude. Not.

Something obviously got lost in the translation to x86.
Umm , I hate to point this out to you , but the UK has been a member of NATO for decades and the UK didn't extradite him to the US.
But why let the facts get in the way of some cliched left wing rant eh?

... could you turn off all of it? Put someone to sleep? Could it be used as an anasthetic.

Why not just hand China the keys to manned spaceflight on a plate and be done with it?
I'm guessing that approach didn't work if the transmitter was running on batteries.

Oh yawn - that search and replace style reply is the lazy mans attempt to be insightful. Try again.

I'm not interested in how some website defines it. I know what the word means thanks and it does not mean any illegal or wrong act undertaken.
End of.
