Remember americans suffer from serious Not Invented Here syndrome. They'll either pretend the opposition doesn't exist or will try and make out their own inferior designs are better. Its something detroit has done since the 70s against japanese and then european cars. And look how well that turned out.
I was in the same situation as you. I wanted a sparc machine at home for work related and development use back in the 90s but I just couldn't justify (or frankly at the time afford) one. Linux wasn't really up to much at the time but it was better than nothing (or windows) so I got a cheap PC , shoved slackware on it and never looked back.
If Sun has priced their desktop systems realistically it might not in the long run have saved them but it certainly might have helped in some small way. Charging 10K for a sparc workstation that had performance that you could achive with a 2K PC was just hubris and the worst kind of corporate reality denial. And the buggers charged extra for a keyboard and Monitor! For a workstation?? Wtf?!
