The problem that I come up against is support: What if it goes wrong? they whine.
I get commission from leads to my mate's beige-box PC business... and my friend provides a warranty, but he doesn't have the time or means to pick up and drop back PCs, or swap out 95% of the system if necessary.
Some of the people i've come accross (ie the potential customers) almost seem to know that they can get an identical system cheaper... but will not make the leap to someone who they've never heard of. It seems like they want to pay 1/minute for tech support, as opposed to local rate!
For those of you (in the UK) interested in earning me some commission, check out Pro's Friend:)
I think one thing that many 'visionaries' overlook is that someone will probably have to provide the information behind these magic new URLs like UPC:3466745689.
In that case, the manufacturer would be a good bet... but what does ISBN:1-84146986-4 take you to?
While I agree with all these visionaries, there is much that needs to be worked out first. A cynic would say that the open nature of the internet doesn't mesh with commercial enterprises, but I hope a compromise can be reached!
Clearly Microsoft would be forced to lobby for special exemption from these rules, otherwise no work would be done because their develoeprs would be in court all the time.
Mind you... that would be kind of selection of the fittest in terms of developers wouldnt it...
This would either require some kind of higher level directory of where to deliver email, or the user would have to trust their old provider to forward it, and not just accept the mail into a box they never read.
16 Simplify Web publishing Why can't we post files from our desktop to a Web site in one drag-and-drop move?>
Wake up Wired! I can do this already... and so can everyone else!
While I agree with your points regarding forcing teachers to teach... he was referring to a document written quite a while ago (by the UN IIRC), not something he bashed out and copied part of into the CD case.
Yes you will have to ring up each time you want to activate it now that you have exceeded your quota of un mediated activations.
The question is: what are you going to do when MS cranks the activation challenge/response strings up to 300 characters, and makes you input it text message style into your phone keypad?
One answer is to get Corporate Edition that doesn't require activation.
Another one is dump XP on a couple of boxes, and install Linux. Install XPde so that peole are at home. Then advertise a discount for people who use your Linu x machines. You could even tie it to an offer, like the first time you use a linux machine for half an hour you get a free can of Coke(tm).
Seriously Jaromil... that private key will be controlled by at least two people. That way you need two incredily stupid MS employees to join their halves of the key. And that chances of that...
Paxfire's Sullivan said his company's service is set up so that only web traffic returns an IP address. Domain queries for non-web applications such as email or FTP are dropped or return error messages, he said.
How on earth can they distinguish between a DNS request originating from my browser, and one originating from my email client? Is there any technical basis for this?? I thought I unnderstood DNS...
Hemos forgot the obligatory disclaimer!

Who will control the control systems?
Why, the lowest bidder of course!
If it wasn't for the legal problems, I'd be quite impressed if my software was being used like this :)

The GPL actually stands for the GNU Public License, not Protective.
Yes changes have to be released, that was in the file you should have read when you got a ocpy of the kernel.
And you do not have to release code to software that you compiled with GPL software such as gcc.
IANAL, but even I can see you need a lawyer who can read a legal document he is presented with.
