The companies don't need immunity, Bush needs it. The second that a lawsuit gets approved, then the depositions start. The first thing that the companies will say is, "Bush made us do it. Our lawyers said this was breaking the law, and we did not want to, but Bush held a gun to our heads." That puts Bush and staff in the court room, then in jail.

It's funny, but the job of president only has one task:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

That's his/her only job. It's not a lot to ask for. So breaking that oath is a big deal, and should come with some jail time.

    Read 1984.

That is the point of having a "war economy". People need to work. They get mad when they are not working. So if you employ people making tanks, bullets and bombs, they are "happy" because they have a job. But a tank is not going to make a person's life better they way a new public transportation system would. Again, I am all for funding the military. But if we don't have to be at war, building a new subway system will do better for the public then a aircraft carrier. Building a 777 is better then a F-22. All will bring an economic gain, when you pay the workers and for the parts, but once finished the 777 or the subway will continue to greatly add value. Yes repairs and spare parts for the military will add to the future economy, but moving thousands of people from point A to point B for work for fun will do better.

  5. Re:What is it good for? on Fixing US Broadband Would Cost $100 Billion · · Score: 5, Insightful

The most important part of the statement is taken from "1984" by George Orwell.

If you have $100 Billion to spend, and you build tanks, bombs and combat jets, you are helping the economy, but only a small amount. Once you use a bomb, it will not add value to the economy. When you build a combat jet, it will not add (much) to the future economy. A bullet shot, is worthless.

If you use that money to build a road, then people will use that road to go to school, work, and shopping. If you use that $100 Billion to build a network, people will read news, buy products, start businesses, and other net related acts. If you use that $100 Billion to build schools and pay for teachers, you get students the get better jobs, pay more taxes, add more to the economy.

I am not saying we should not fund our military. But saying that spending money on war helps the economy, well it does, but in the long run. By using that money to better the countries roads, power lines, water supply, hospitals, whatever, you will get a return on your investment.

If you borrow money to make a bullet, your money is lost forever. If you borrow money to build a road, then you will get your worth.

The MacBook Air is a perfect computer for me. I want the small size and weight. I don't need the other ports all the time. If you do need the ports, and the optical drive, get a different laptop.

I also have a PowerMac G5 at home that I do use the optical and have other items attached, like a printer. If you have more then one computer, then the Air is a great laptop. I think that Apple did a good job cutting out the fat on a laptop. Does everyone want a low fat laptop? I would say no, but then they are not getting rid of the other MacBooks.

If you are traveling and you need the wired network, then you can buy an adapter. It's not a perfect solution, but most people will not need it, and in the future, wireless networks will be even more available.

  8. Re:A perfect argument for school vouchers on 12 Florida Schools Pass Anti-Evolution Resolutions · · Score: 1

School vouchers are really just a tax break for the rich who send kids to private school. "Here have a free $2,000". That's great when your school costs $10,000 a year, but it's not going to get your kid in to that school if you don't have the other $8,000. It's not going to help schools that are having problems, because kids will be pulled out and the funding will be cut. It would be better to stop funding schools with local taxes. Spread the money around more evenly.

    /sarcasm

Up until the 80 you could work a minimum wage job over the summer and pay for one year of college. The cost of college has gone up much faster then minimum wage. Grants from the government used to pay for ~95% of your costs, now it's down around ~40%. Thank you Regan! We all get an advantage when we have a population with college degrees, or have good roads, or fire departments, or FAA. You have to accept that you live in a country. You are not alone on an island where you can do whatever you want and you can ignore others. It's We the people in order to form a more perfect union. Not "I will do whatever I want."

We are the government. People forget that. It's not the government taking money from you, it's you taking money from you. If you don't like what's going on, work to change it. If you don't want a population of people with college degrees, change the system. If you don't want to pay for public fire departments, change the system. But I will tell you now I am working to keep things like colleges open, fire departments funded, clean air/water and so on, because it belongs to all of us, not just me.
