    You would think that companies would have to pay appropriately for the jobs done, but wait! In the 80s the current man in charge granted amnesty to illegal working. Thus increasing the available worker pool, and lowering wages. Then the government started a war on unions. About 25% of the workforce in the US was unionized. One of the functions is to limit access to jobs, decreasing the supply of qualified workers, thus increasing the wages. With a decrease in unionized jobs the worker pool increased and lowered wages. Then someone realized that people in India speak pretty good English. Why pay an American a good wage to take calls when you can pay someone in India a lot less? Thus increasing the available worker pool, and lowering wages. Then in the 90s we passed a trade agreement that opened the borders around the world for large companies. Now it was easy to offshore jobs to other countries, and import the goods back in to the US. Why pay an American a good wage to make a thing when you can pay someone in China to make it for 10 times less? Thus increasing the available worker pool, and lowering wages.

    How do we solve this? Get corporate and union money out of politics. Have publicly financed elections. Get out of the WTO. End NAFTA. Enact the Free Choice Act. Make things in the US. Charge a lot of money to import things made outside of the US.

    Go after companies that higher illegal works. Put the CEO and head of HR in jail. If the supply of jobs for illegal works goes away, then the illegal workers will go away too. Right now we go after the workers. That does not help.

    Another fun trick was to take a $1 and a $20 and cut them both in half. Then tape half of the $1 and the $20 to make two $21 dollar bills. Silly I know, but if you put them in a change machine, it would look for the numbers in the corners, it would read a 20 then a 1 and then give you $21 in change. You then took the other part and got $21 in change as well. Quick way to double your money. Now the machines check to make sure that all four numbers on the corners match up.

    What about just advertising the brand? If IP = US ad for McDonald's new heart attack burger. If IP != US, then just a general ad for McDonalds.

    Or you can advertise products that people would never buy. For example, on CNN I see ads for Boeing all the time. I am not in the market for a new 787, and I bet that 99.9999996% of the viewers are not as well.

    When I found out that my brother had cancer, one of the first things that I did was talk to my dad about getting account info for his email and MySpace page. Matt never moved over to Facebook. When he died, we were able to send a message to his friends, and let people know what happened. A friend of his set up a FaceBook group to remember him. It has been a huge help to read stories and good thoughts from the people who knew him. I am glad that FaceBook is doing this.

    People make money from what they read in WSJ. It is more then just informational news, it is money making informational news. It is why they can charge for it. A lot of the information can't be found in other sources.

    Detailed stories about how a company is doing = worth paying for.
    Detailed stores about the latest hoax or car chase = not worth paying for.

    You hear that other newspapers wanting to charge for information? If it will not make a person money, or is easily accessed from other sources, people will not pay for it, other then having ads placed on the page.

    How about Maternity Leave?
    What about the ability to take sick time when your kids is sick?

    Unions fought for every one of these things and more. Unions make things better for working people.

    I am not, nor have ever been part of a union. I just like the idea of democracy in the work place.

    Unions are a democracy.
    Business are a dictatorship.

    When a union tells its members, "You should do X," you can work on changing the direction of the Union by voting in new leadership, or run for a position yourself.

    When a business tells its employees, "You should do X," you can quit.

    Step Two. Receive large campaign donations to stop that law.

    You say "Tax" like it's a bad thing. Sure, I will agree that over-taxation is a problem, but without taxes, we don't have a civil society. I bet that MS loves the local educated population. They love the fire departments that respond to emergencies. They call the police when some one breaks the law. They use the local courts to settle law-suits. You can game the system, and steal from the local population by not paying your fair share, you can pay up like a good citizen, or you can leave the state.

    Or, we have the more intelligent kids teach the less intelligent ones. I forget what country this is done in, but the teacher will explain the topic, if the kid understands it, he/she stand up. When enough kids are standing, they form groups, and start to teach the kids sitting down. The teacher walks from group to group to make sure everything is going well. The lesson is finished when all the kids are standing. This gives the intelligent kids less time to be bored and helps the slower kids learn with direct interaction. The kids can always call over the teacher if a question comes up that they can't answer.

    McCain is 72. He has had cancer. The chance that he will become sick enough to no longer hold office is much greater then Obama who is 43. Obama picked Biden, and he has the experience to fill the job much better then a mayor of a town of 8,000 who has 18 months in office as Gov of a state with 687,000 people. The city I live in has more people then the state of Alaska. McCain might have had a better chance if he picked Jodi Rell Governor of Connecticut.

    You still get the normal airport search, you just get to skip the line. That's all this does. You still have your bags x-rayed, and you still have to remove your shoes and all metal from your body. I just signed up for this, because I almost missed my last flight due to the extra long line at the airport. Now I am having second thoughts.

    I built the original iMac website. Apple was keeping this such a secret that I did not find out about it until the night before the launch, at 11pm. It was a lot of work, and I was tired, but it was great to be a part of such a great product. (Except the mouse.) It's been 10 years? I feel old.

    20 out of 50 was just an easy number example.

    I agree with your second statement. Just remember, you are working for what you take home. To use my above numbers, if you know that you will get 30 out of 50, and it is worth it to you, you will take the job. If you get only 25 out of 50, you will turn the job down, and look for something that pays 55 so you can take home 30.

    If the government lowered taxes to 0, do you think all the jobs that paid 50,000 a year would not drop to 35 or 40 or whatever is "fair" for the job?

    My overall point was that in the short run, lower taxes help the poor and rich alike. In the long run, lower taxes hurt the poor, because they don't get as many services or chances (like college) that the rich do.

    In the short run, higher taxes hurt the poor and don't to much to the rich. In the long run, higher taxes HELP the poor, and don't do too much to the rich. Now everyone will have access to important things like full health care and college education.

    We all have to agree on what we want from our government. Do we want a government that only punishes us, police and military? Or do we want a government that give us the opportunity to make a better life for ourselves? That give us the tools to have good jobs. That provides fire protection, and police protection. That makes sure that the banks are not running off with our money. To make sure that our food and water are clean and safe. That the toys we give our kids are not full of toxic metals. One that supports the troops and funds veteran health care and gives them the body armor they need to do their job. That airplanes will not collide or fall out of the sky.

    I guess that I take the view that:

    "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity."

    Taxes are what you pay for a civil society. If you want total disorder, don't pay your taxes. I don't understand why people hate taxes so much. I love having police, fire, schools, roads, FAA, FTC, and all the other things that taxes bring.

    Unfair taxes are a problem, we just have to all agree what is unfair. It seem like this might be a case of an unfair tax, but that is why we have people represent us. If you don't like what he/she is doing, tell them, if they do it anyway, vote them out. It's not the fastest system, but look at the Patriot Act as an example of what happens when our government moves quickly.

    Taxes in the long run do not change how much you make for a job. If you make 50,000 and have 20,000 taken away for tax, you are working for 30,000 a year. If the government cuts taxes, and you now take home 35,000 a year, do you think that your company will still give you a raise, or they will not cut benefits? They already know you are willing to work for 30,000 a year. On the other hand if they raise your taxes and you are now taking home 25,000 a year, you (and everyone else) will go to your employer and tell them you need a raise, because you are not making your 30,000 a year.

    People in europe take home about the same amount of money that we do in the US. They get MORE money before tax, and more taxes taken out. The taxes pay for all sorts of wonderful things like a full college education, up to a doctorate.

    So yes, taxes can be unfair. But without them, we would have regional war lords, no education, dirt roads, and a short crappy life. That is not the world that I want to live in.

    "War" has to be declared by Congress. What we have right now is a police action. A soldier can't be quartered in your house, because we are at "peace".

    The downfall of all of this is that there is no physical link between the tag and any human being.

    Shhhh don't give them any ideas! Next thing you know they are going to implant chips for you to travel, or go work, or get your chocolate ration for the week. I hear it's up to 20 grams!
