    I don't think it's as simple as the whole system crashing when passing new year. More like if some course correction rocket is fired a millisecond before midnight, and is never turned off.

    I guess the problem is not changing the clock, but that something might go wrong if they do.

    I don't thing all the software on the shuttle is one piece of code anyway.

    As every other post seems to defend Sony here, I have to object.

    Just like Microsoft did with the 360, Sony is releasing a very small amount of consoles at a price far below the market value. Sony isn't making money now. The reason is to make the PS3 seems desirable and popular for when they release the big batch just before the hollidays. Sony _wants_ headlines about PS3s selling out quickly. And what better way to get media attention than violence?

    No, I'm not saying that this is all Sony's fault, or that they are juridically responsible. But I think it is a problem when companies plan for and profit from violence at product releases.

    This pledgebank was set up by someone who's not even affiliated with the OLPC project. The OLPC project never aimed to sell laptops to internet users for $300. It aims to sell laptops to developing countries in large batches for $100 each.

    I don't run as root in Linux, but don't see your point here. Full access? Why would I care? Everything valuable on my computer is in the user home folder anyway.

    I think the grandparent meant that the user knows the root password anyway.
    Isn't a user account enough to use the computers as spambots, members of a distributed DoS net, or identity theives? Any importand files on a desktop linux system are probably in the user home folder anyway.

    I have never heard of a local root explot in WinXP. Either there are none (ha ha), or nobody cares because there are much more serious exploits in Windows.

    So he got 2 million frequent flyer miles from 40 trips. He could get a first class trip for 90,000 miles. So he could have got 22 free flight. More than one free flight per two paid ones. Are the frequent flyer systems really that good?

    I have better use for my time than convincing some 14-year-old to let me in on his super-elite torrent tracker. I like going to a public site, search, click, forget it for a while, and it's done. If you are looking for some specific genre and find a private site specializing on just than I can see the point. But hey, even anime is mainstream by now.

    What I do when I feel like that, is that I go edit some completely uncontroversial article. And if there is a controversy even on that topic, I ignore it.

    Talking about about factors behind crime does not mean there is no personal responsibility. It's only libertarians who keep thinking so.

    If we want to reduce crime, then analyzing what influences crime rates is a good idea. Refusing to discuss such factors because it "eclipses personal responsibility" is a bad idea.

    This problem wouldn't have existed if people like you didn't block everything you don't know. I'm at uni dorm network I'm right now. Whoever set it up must have takes the safe route and blocks everything except port 80, 22 and whatever. Skype works great. ICQ and MSN work too, but not as stable.

    Please understand that the internet is not only for grandmas web surfing.

    This is the natural response to to the unnecessary port-blocking that seems to be used everywhere now. Many places block every port except for the few you need for web surfing, so everything runs on port 80. It's sad because it negates the point of ports in the first place.

    In the end, I think sysadmins need to learn that users aren't satisfied with only web surfing.

    People make it seem like iTunes is on our side against the big record companies or something. It's not. If the RIAA companies really disliked iTunes, they could stop iTunes from selling their songs any time. The RIAA likes iTunes. Sure, they would like to make even more money from it, but they make plenty now as well. All this "fighting" between Jobs and RIAA is just a show.

    To make it simple, Apple and RIAA are in bed with each other. They just can't decide who's to be on top.

    Don't mix everything up. It's perfectly posible to be against free drugs and guns, but for P2P and free discussion of rootkits.

    As long as it's just information, it's first amendment.

    They already do.

    Now I accept these are my limits.. and to an extent (I know this is a very mean thing to say but..) some disabled people need to accept that computers may just not be useable on there own at this stage. Most abled bodied people will full vision have trouble typing, finding stuff and such. How are you ment to teach a person who can't see the keyboard or the screen how to use a PC? It's like trying to build an IKEA bed in the dark.. Extremely difficult.

    Blind people have been using computers for years. There is speech synthesis and keyboards for the blind. It's not perfect, but it works.

    I think Linux could become a great os of disabled people. Since it can easily be modified, and a lot is text-based.

    I actually did that once. On a P75 overclocked to a whopping 100 MHz. 48 Mb RAM. Couldn't boot from cd.

    Then I used it for a computer throwing competition...

    How exactly is this different from the real world? I have studied physics for some years, but I have never never found any law of nature recognising marriage. It is after all "just a bunch of people standing around in a church".
