  1. traffic on How Has Post-9/11 Legislation Affected You? · · Score: 1

I live in Washington DC, and there are big tanks with army guys holding heavy assault rifels pointed at the roads as you drive by. I actually think this is kind of cool, except everyone goes the stupid speed limit (like they're gonna hop in their tank and give you a ticket)! On most other highways people average closer to 15 over, so it is a big difference. This adds to traffic around rush hour too, but thankfully I don't need to drive on this road most of the time.

Besides that, and the fact that new years was borring because nobody wanted to go to the mall (place in DC) or to New York City, I haven't felt much of the heat dirctly.

  10. This worries me. on MS Exec: 'Our products just aren't engineered for security' · · Score: 2, Interesting

What worries me about this is not that microsoft products are not engineered for security, we've all known that for years. It's that microsoft is admitting to it openly.

In terms of marketing, Microsoft knows what they are doing, and they must believe that admitting this wont hurt their sales significantly. Has their customer base become so lowtech that the idea of insecure products doesn't bother them? Or are they simply so powerful that we (the rest of the world) can do nothing to stop them. I'm hoping that this is some kind of horrible mistake on their part, but I doubt it.

I spoke to a microsoft engineer once about .net and he told me that they were working on developing the .net virtual machines for Unix and other non-Windows OSes, but they were specifically planning on not releasing them if .net did well, as that would force developers to use Windows. I suspected as much, but the fact that they would come out and say it worries me.

There are similar institutions around, but they're hard jobs to land, don't pay well, and you often have to work there as a student/prof before you can become a non-school-related employee.

If that doesn't work out, I suggest trying a job in a corporate setting that is simply more interesting. System Administration is not the end of the road. If you want to get into science, get yourself a Ph. D. or Masters (if you don't have it) and then join a big company with a an R&D dept (or a startup working on a future tech idea). There's a big difference between computer science and computer engineering in the corporate world.

That said, academia and government lab work is a good idea too. It's not my cup of tea, and you'll have to learn to live with the fact that 50% of you work will be battling to do your work, but hey, at least it's the hard science and non of the mushy sysadmin stuff.

You don't have to throw away the tradition of an engagment ring, just look into alternative. I don't know about other rocks, but I'm sure you can do similar things with other rare rocks.
