I supose I should also add that if they do connect to the university network and you get an IP from whatever method, it is probobly going to look just like one of the IPs your daughter usually gets.
"Dear, I think I found out where your laptop thief is!!!"
"Where dad?"
"From his IP, it looks like he is at the University of BigState"
"Dad..."
well, if it is stolen on a college campus, it probobly WILL get connected to the internet. Either the campus wireless as soon as its turned on or the theif will turn it on and plug it in back at their dorm room. That said, I agree that its too hard to make it phone home like that (maybe if it was on: connect rather than on: boot).
The best thing to do would be to make sure that the MAC address of every single networking device in the system is written down where you can find it and again where she can find it (and registered with the university if they offer). The university knows its own network and has managed networking hardware so if you can provide the MAC address of the system, they can monitor it and know exactly what port it is connected to (or hotspot it is in). It is simple from that point to send in the campus police to knock on the door of Room 302 of McThiefy Hall. The added bonus of this plan is that it still works when the first thing done to it is a reformat.
Thats the best I can provide (as another student entering the class of 2009) so I hope it isnt hidden to deep in the comments to be seen.
I agree, its the same as the people who bitch about the dreamhost referral links. It doesn't cost you anything extra to go through a referral link. They do a great job and I would recommend them to anyone who asked, its just that this way I get either 10% of their bill or $100. Costs nothing extra because dreamhost simply knows that they will be able to keep customers long enough to recover that price.
indeed. the keyword spamming sucks but you can work your way around it (just ignore the shit).
What really sucks ass are the fricking mega "powersellers." I just bought something the other day (promedia ultra 5.1) and not only am I pretty sure that I was shill-bid up to a higher price, but I got the thing and of course it doesnt work (dead amp, clearly dropped hard and not in shipping). I'm out return shipping and I plan to issue a chargeback if the guy wont give me back the full amount I payed him (no way am I paying for him to mail me broken goods).
He is one of those sellers that has tens of thousands of feedbacks and they roll in fast enough that the front page is always positive but the negatives are quite negative (and there are negative ones listed as positive to avoid feedback retaliation which is another shitty part of ebay). He clearly makes it a habit to screw customers but ebay wont do shit becuase he is a powerseller. The BBB in his state has apparently stopped taking complaints because they have recieved so many without a response from the business but they cant really do anything. I havn't even been able to get a direct response, I only get automated mails telling me to leave feedback (but I plan to wait until 90 days are up to leave a nasty feedback and hope he cant retaliate before the link is taken away).
It's shit like that that makes ebay suck. The company wouldnt survive on their own, they require ebay's services along with the fact that customers are more trusting on ebay. If they had to fend for themselves, that 7% or so of pissed off customers is all it takes to screw the business because the happy and mildly satisfied people dont show up to support them, only the angry people go to complain. I am perfectly happy buying my item from some guy who has somethign to sell, I dont care if it takes a little longer to ship because I often get better documentation and communication as well as a product that works.
I hope that the other places take away the megasellers because the assholes wont survive outside of ebay (the froogle link to resellerratings wont help that). The good megasellers would leave and survive and the bad ones would be all that was left. Ebay would have no choice but to change their policies and deal with ALL bad sellers (not just the ones who arent powersellers) or else the customers would get mighty angry.
P.S. The seller in question is bargaindepot04, they have some other names and they operate auctionlogistix.com. It's not worth it to try no matter how low the price is because its probobly broken or lied about in some other way(and even if you get it for half of what its worth, you were probobly shill-bid to that level). If anyone else has had a bad experiance with this guy (and many have) and want to get together and try do do something about it...lets give it a shot.
It might be a nifty way to do it. I download most (all really) of my torrents on windows. I wouldnt normally expect my newest copy of some distro to have any windows spyware built in.
I would think (given the way many of them lease out time) that many supercomputers run at pretty high utilization most of the time.
People prepare the simulations or calculations that need to be run and estimate a block of time needed. They then give that to the operators and request said block of time. The operators run the simulation as soon as that block is available.
And you know that that offer to academic institutions is just a lure...
"You see, this is the finest private super computer on IBM processors. You may have heard about the school that has a apple super computer, well, that was made when they used IBM processors. If you happen to be in the market for a supercomputer be aware that you can no longer trust Apple to make them the say way and are safer going directly with a system from IBM. Please enjoy your computing time, we sincerely hope that you did not accidentally underestimate the power of our supercomputer and lease too much time."

How about a good book and then he just reads one chapter a month...tear the book to pieces and send the chapters to a relative with instructions on when to send it back to you (along with a SASE).
I watch TV...but most if it is just like you said: a copy of the daily show. The only differance is that I watch a copy of the daily show 4 days a week (thats how many times its on). I dont really see it as pirated though, just time shifted as I could simply turn on the TV at 10:00 or set my VCR (oh sorry forgot this thread was about the VCR being dead, I meant set my capture card) to record for half an hour. It's not like I would watch the commercials anyways (well, there might be a good one that I would watch but the daily show cappers tend to include the funny commercials).
I also have torrents of Desperate Housewives (full season), Grey's Anatomy (only a few), and Family guy which I actually watched on TV but missed a few episodes or wanted to watch again later. I guess here I couldnt have just stuck in a tape since DH and Family guy aired at the same time but I do happen to own more than one vcr (sorry, capture cards) so it wouldnt be a problem.
I had an old girlfriend who was pretty bad at capitalizing things and she used QWERTY
Strange though, there was a bug with her computer and it would randomly decide to switch to DVORAK mode. Everything she typed would come out funny and she would have to reboot. She eventually figured out how to type "brb" before doing this and I realized that those keys were the dvorak equivalent.
I have really been enjoying my use of sunbird and I think that both iCal and sunbird could learn from each other. The use of the actual iCal format is great and something that outlook lacks. I cant point outlook to my webdav folder and tell it to work with the calendar that I access on multiple machines.
iCal REALLY needs to be able to publish and subscribe to the same calendar. Sunbird does it with no problem. In a large system, there could be concurrency errors but on a small scale, its behavior is fine (it downloads a new version of hte file, applies changes, reuploads). iCal can only do one or the other which is a pain if you want to set it up to be shared between a few computers (home and work or a small office).
Sunbird just needs to get better. It looks like it will be replaced with lightning which will make thunderbird more of an outlook competetor (I love it for IMAP email). It's printing system pretty much sucks (no options for color or really any options besides what to display, the fact that it has to be reopened every time you change an option...) and there are many functions that are sketchy or dont work at all. It also could really use the ability to move an event from one calendar to another (or at least copy it).
I've been using Sunbird for many months now, running several of my own calendars (webdav) and subscribing to someone elses (that they are updating from iCal on icalx or something) and it has been very stable. I would say that the mozilla calendar core is pretty solid and it could be a strong comptetetor if it fixated on a single release (no calendar, sunbird, lighting) and got some real development done. Lightning would clearly be the best option for this and it looks like it is what has been chosen.
"(Because frankly, these people are the "power users" who run at least 1 or 2 pirated apps for every legally owned one already. They just like trying out new things and can't afford to buy them all.)"
That for some reason is one of the truest things I have read on here in a while. I like how you define power user that way because they really ARE the people who know enough to go and "get" the software and ACTUALLY USE it. Its not like the people who pirate mass amounts for fun, they are the users who get the program and actually use it to its full extent and maybe then they go buy it (on the next version change and only buy the upgrade of course).
Hey, mod him something else, thats not just funny, its a good idea.
Nobody is going to care about the backpage headline saying "DVD Decrypter author in legal fiasco" but they might see and wonder about the slightly larger print "PatriotDVD CE (capitalist edition)." They would tell all of their friends about how they read an article such and such a studio trying to infringe on their rights by killing the patriots.
Its far out there, but if you are looking for a name for a similar program, just give it a shot. And besides, isn't piracy legitimate in a completely free market? Everybody is doing whatever they can to get money, the programmers make pirate software to break the newest lock, the pirates pirate and the studios try to prevent it, just one big circle of pure-free-market goodness
When I want to play a game, I dont want to get up and go to the TV and use a box I payed another few hundred dollars for (and pay a monthly fee to play online), I want to click in a few places and be playing.
I have a powerfull enough computer for other reasons (well maybe there arent better reasons for the graphics card than gaming) and I can play all my games on a far superiour display device with far superior resolution.

as long as its one of them damn boffins

"Oh shit, nobody tell the boss but I think I just hit the wrong speed-dial"
but...really they are just HELPING all of the senseless computer users who wouldnt have RSS available to them without Microsoft RSSplorer (TM)

Hmm...I guess since there was no article for me to read, I didnt even RTFC
I do wish it was as simple as changing it in the selection box (they gray it out once it has been added to the calendar the first time)
Can I do that without an exchange server? They tend to be costly.
You would think that for being the "flagship scientific computing facility" they could afford a better digital camera...

Of course, many don't do this but it technically is required.

I wish I had some mod points.
actually, if you wanted perfect reception while tied to a wire, you could probobly do that without them building a cell tower...just use a real phone.
you could decompress the mpeg to raw AVI or something but that would just be silly and you would lose the ISO
But your phone would get excellent reception.
