Well.. You didn't do any serios CAD or video editing in your life then. Repeat after me: people don't care about OS and licensing/distribution model. They care about apps. If the great app has source available and is free: it IS great. Apache, Asterix PBX are great and free. But they belong on the server side.
Just think about it: People want software to do what they want, they don't care about licensing. They just want their work done quickly and with minimal burden. Did I say something new? No. So why you guys keep wondering why commercial software is better? Well, because it better does its job most of the time. Give me open-source replacement to Photoshop and Maya (no, GIMP and Bender don't count). I'l be using it in no time.
I can complete my space shooter I've been working on. Oh wait.. It was in '80s. But still good to know they made such great progress - gonna change the whole gaming industry.
It's not like conventional shell. Monad is engineered to transfer/transform not just text data, but.NET objects. For instance monadgrep text test.xml | monadcat > new.xml (just an idea). So it's quite different. I didn't actually try it, because I don't want to sign up for beta etc, but when it's out, I'll definitely give it a shot.
I think that "limited liability" is already stated in EULA. Why do you think nobody sued MS or other software giant for bugs/exploits? And that's a good thing actually, because it's market force in action, not freaking lawsuits (If the software is buggy - just stop buying. Simple). The least of two evils.
Yawn... Relax man... We have Bruce Willis to save the Earth... I mean he drills, he thrills.. He makes love, no war . He drives flying cars. All sort of cool things. You buddy just get a beer and relax.

No.. it's evolution->exchange connector. The server is Exchange. The client is Evolution. I need outlook->open source server connector. So client is Outlook and server is some open source server such as SLOX or OpenExchnage or Exchange4Linux.
Is why we didn't get some open source Outlook Connector yet. Some companies (OpenExchange) won't even provide an eval of the connector to see if it really works in Outlook. Bynari - too buggy. SLOX - not tried yet. We ended up using CommuniGate Pro from stalker.com. I don't like it.. server is too closed source and inflexible. BUT it has _excellent_ OL interoperability... My boss just forced me to use it because of this.
When we'll see some open source or at least free Outlook Connector to these exch-replacing systems, we effectively killed exchange.
Where do you get ZideLook (OL connector)? As my boss told me - the company that makes ZideLook won't provide an eval - they wanted him buy the whole pack of licenses... We neded up using http://stalker.com's CommuniGate Pro. That's pity, because I liked OpenGroupware.

You're mostly correct, and I understand what you're trying to say, but I don't buy it... Think about it, maybe you'll re-think why people or corporations (IBM and Novell today, SCO yesterday, who tomorrow?) are doing it.
Only 2 of your points don't involve money:
- "Some people have a political motivation to undermine proprietary software" and
- "Some people like to help others".
The driving force behing the first is usually hatred or envy. The second is of course a noble point and I like it.
Everything other is just a quest for money and power.
- "People want better software to do $WHATEVER": money here.
- "People want to get a job as a programmer": money here.
- "People like fame; they like being admired and appreciated": of course.. and then follow the money.
- "An industry consortium decides they need an open, standard, free way to do $WHATEVER": and more importantly to undermine its competitiors.
- "Your company might want to make your product universally (or nearly so) used in order to be able to charge money for training, certification, etc": money again.
They didn't release they engine yet for 3rd party developers... The game only. So I think they don't even have a comprehensive feature list for 3d developers in terms they can decide to buy it or not.
Once you separate the business logic and other standalone components - just do unit testing on them. Your UI/network code should not contain wiring logic spaghetti! Separate into validation etc logic that also can be unit-tested. If a button handler has 50 lines of code... - you have much more problems in the first place, solve them first.
These funny colors at slashdot, broken IE, broken Firefox... Bye bug-infested and eye-sore world, I'm going to live in a cave and use text-based browsers on good ol' green 300 baud terminal.
I'll second that. How many times I noticed that getting up early and getting your ass from the office yearly improves the quality of code at work and quality of life in general. You'll have a choice of spend some time in evening just resting or maybe doing some programming projects for fun. More important you'll have a good rest and no burnout.

Still waiting for AGP version... AGP versions aren't even announced yet, only PCI Express.
Somewhere later in October or November.

So what are motivations besides money, huh?
you obviously have non-standard netstat...
standard is:
netstat -o
it's netstat -o, sorry :)
