    Nope there either...

I know, I know... he's made a few bad rap songs for a few questionable movies, but cut the guy some slack. He hasn't done a rap video for *EVERY* movie.

Seems like this was an idea ahead of it's time (like the newton) and far more useful than just a tablet.

And, even if they don't, wouldn't it still be easier to throw a old copy of encarta or groliers in and do research on that? And where did I talk about new software and the licensing that would require? They could use whatever is preinstalled. And I know you can grab those old encyclopedia CD-Roms in used CD bins for under a few bucks. Just as an example, my mother still uses a Pentium 60 with 48MB of ram to get on AOL. The criticism of BeOS not supporting enough hardware is actually a good way to point out the effect of the Microsoft monopoly on competitors like Be. By preventing OEMs from putting BeOS on their machines, Microsoft killed off the possibility of BeOS getting enough traction to get started.

This may indeed be true. But OS/2 and Linux had no trouble supporting them. And OS/2 was long since "dead" by this time, and the BeOS was still being actively developed.

I tried the BeOS a few years back, when the company was around, and they had released some sort of "Preview Edition" which installed itself as one large file on your FAT partition, and you booted into that. The same as some Linuxes do..

Anyhow, I played around with it for a day or two, then nuked it. Why? Two simple reasons.

It did not detect or configure my network card. And it wasn't really clear how to do that. Linux installers do that, and have done it for years.

It didn't detect or configure my video card. And when I followed the instructions on doing so, the BeOS wouldn't boot.

So that was it for the BeOS. Maybe the full version would configure everything during it's installation; but why would I pay to find out?

So yeah, I do feel sad when people go on about the death of the BeOS. But I have much more compassion for the OS/2 users. That installed right (mostly), and I lived with that for 4 years.

Answer: It's on a larger scale, and it isn't. Seriously... it's a freakin beta folks. They want to test it, and I'm sure they have a ton of beta testers with specific hardware and setups that they need. Sure, releasing it to the general computing public may be better, but they're probably not ready for that yet. So I'd back off and wait. And second... stop bashing SUSE folks. The source for their installer is available. You can use it. People like it. People use it. It isn't the largest distro in europe without reason. So uh, there.

Think about it. They have (or have had) a copy of IE for linux kicking around internally. IE exists for other unixes (too lazy to go check which at the moment tho). They have a media player for unixes (or they did). Wouldn't it be nice if they went to the show and released those, or annouced something about them, rather than hawking Visual Studio .NET and XP Embedded.
