  1. Get it direct from microsoft on Windows XP SP2 In Release · · Score: 1

  2. The next version. on Scientists Invent Scientist · · Score: 1

This is how I envision this robots progression... "Now that we saw how no one really cares about a robot being able to do something as meaningful as eventually solving dangerous experiments that a human shouldn't be doing. Version 2 will be able to "run" at .5 meters per hour, do the river dance, while also able to throwing a plastic ball about 2 feet."

  3. Why choose? on DVD Recording - Is There a Winner Yet? · · Score: 2, Informative

Go for a dual format drive... The DRU-500AX or DW-U10A (OEM version of the 500) will do DVD+/-R/RWs. I've got a Ikebana dual format dvd burner, which is the DW-U10A rebaged. I flashed it with a modified firmware and now it's just like the DW-U10a, and I can even use the same firmware. This is a drive to look out for... (I got it for 220 after $50 MIR, you can find the DW-U10A for a little under 300 shipped)

  4. Not keeping all your eggs in one basket on Preserving VHS Recordings For Another 20 Years? · · Score: 1
Converting the tapes to MPEG2 is more then likely the best idea. Even now, the newest upcoming formats will still be using this compression (HDTV for example) and will very likely be supported for awhile.

I would store this on as many different formats as possible(that you can afford at least)... CDR/W, DVD-R/Ws, hard drives, tape backups etc. When stored in a data format (not as a DVD video standard) you could also use parchive parity files, PARs for short. Just go on google/favorite search engine and look for SmartPAR, the best one out there imo. While it will take a good deal more space, just as any parity RAID would. The time you want this to last the more likely something will happen to damage some of the files... The only problem with this is if there aren't any supporting programs for this format in the future, and the copy in archive also gets corrupted, your SOL. I guess you would just wanna put many copies of it all over the backup mediums. You just gotta hope future computers will also still support 32-bit windows 9x/NT programs...

Really currently it sounds like from the rest of the posts here, that there is no life time storage format. Everything has it's faults... You're just gonna have to wait another 10-20 years, and do this same processes over. By then, I would hope you would have more options...

  5. Chicago has been doing it too on 11 Digit Dialing Comes Home to New York · · Score: 1
I think it's been like a year we have been doing it... This really messes up caller id phones with a redial function... Better not to tell it what area code you are in :/

Adding more digits is going to suck, will be really hard to remember a phone number... They had better start letting us like pick a number if they add a ton of numbers(and replace all the phones we have with caller id :P), so we can make words up with the letters on the phone or something... I just hope we don't ever get to the point when we can do a whole sentence...

  6. Re:Recharge? on USB Key-Sized MP3 Player With LCD Display · · Score: 1

That would add to the size(it's 1.5v, so it would need to step down the voltage), and to the cost... I think this design is fine, just keep a few rechargeable AAAs on you...

  7. Nice display, but how does it sound? on USB Key-Sized MP3 Player With LCD Display · · Score: 4, Informative
The muvo might not have a display, but it has a great signal to noise ratio of >90dB. Which is far better then any on board soundcard, and bargin bin sound cards... I think that's even better then the older sound blaster cards...

If you want to test your sound card you can get this program to see how your sound card stacks up to the muvo. muvo specs here You'll need to run a cable from your speaker out to your stereo input on your soundcard...

But if your headphones suck, it really won't matter will it :D

  8. extreme cooling with 35-40db sound level... on Building a Dead Silent PC · · Score: 1

Chip-Con ApS's Prometeia vapor cooling system which can not only get the hottest AMD(72-77 watts) down to -40c (yes NEGATIVE 40c), but it also is only 40db during boot up, then 35db during normal operation...
There isn't a block for VGA just yet, but I don't see why it wouldn't be in the next version...

The biggest drawback is the price. Even if you only try to buy "the fridge" alone (bottom part of the case+cooler unit). The price still hovers above $600...

I don't think this product has been on slashdot before. If it has, this is just a reminder of a very "cool" product :D

  10. Sure looks nice... on New DOOM III Shots · · Score: 2, Insightful

    But looks aren't everything...

I remember when unreal first came out... Yes, it had the best eye candy at the time. But the game play pretty much sucked, and don't get me started on the multi-player. It got boring after the first few levels.. The only highlight of the game (other then the graphics) was the point when all the lights start going out and your stuck in a little hall way with the skajhoweveryouspellit.

This sort of sounds like the direction more single player games are going now (take the very still popluar half life, NOLF, and most all of the games based on the quake3 engine), with scripted events. Which we already know that doom3 is going to have. I hope they go more into the direction of do whatever you want to do, just get the job done... Not like you have to use some switch in some hidden room to kill so and so monster...

Since I brought up half life, I also herd that they aren't going to tweak the multi-player much for this installment... I don't know about everyone else, but the multi-player support in doom was one of the best features of the game. Look at half life for instance. Do you think people would still be playing or even buying a game almost 4 years old, if all they could really do is play single player? I bet most people have never even played single player half life. I really didn't like the direction they went with quake3/ta. If I want to play human like players, why don't I just go online and play human players?!? The single player modes were pretty lame in that respect, don't waste my hard drive space with this ai crap...

Don't get me wrong, I'm a very loyal id fan(I own them all but the orignal doom, since ult doom includes it :D). I just hope they don't get influenced by the direction the gaming industry has been going on about lately. They either want to focus on the single player, or multi-player game only. To do it right, you've got to get both balanced imo...

In any case, I still can't wait to satisfied my sweet tooth for eye candy :D
