Granted, we should remove Saddam by force. The problem is that we're a^H^H the superpower. The rest of the world is scared shitless that they're going to be next. No one wants to get bombed because their leader beat Bush's bowling score last week. As a country capable of doing this to any other country, we have a responsibility to get global support before flying off the handle like this. Scaring the rest of the world into submission is not going to help our situation. Eventually they're going to find a way to fight back.

I simply don't have the time to do a financial analysis every time I make a decision, so yes, sometimes I consider what the national news outlets are saying about the economy. I also consider what my friends and family are saying. Since half of them have been layed off in the last 3 years I'd say we've got some problems. It's possible these problems were caused by someone in the media mentioning the word recession, but I doubt it.

OTOH, I don't doubt that we Americans live in a constant state of fear, which is often fueled by 24-hour news channels and web sites. We simply aren't used to being bombbarded with information all the time, especially when media outlets make themselve so self-important to get ratings. We hear about every layoff, every corporate scandal and every dip in stock price. We're seeing the flip side of the dot-com bubble. Instead of being too optimistic, we're being too pessimistic. It's hype either way.

What can I say? That's capitalism for ya. Media outlets make big money by getting people to watch.

You make a good point, but don't you think it is worth our time and effort to design structures that can stand the test of time? It's like programming a quick script to do the current task instead of writing a general purpose piece of software that can be used over and over. Admittingly, software is a bad example, a quick hack can be easily reproduced and customized to do the next task, a poorly designed house cannot. I think it's well within our reach to design structures that can be easily maintained and adapted to meet new needs.

Having your computer on all the time might be a drawback for some, but saving 50-100 dollars on a Tivo would be nice for those of us with full-time servers running already. Stuff a gig of cheap RAM in it and you should be able to overcome any network latency and perhaps some of the time-shifting features could be used with no hard drive at all.

Making a quick buck here may supress the buying power of a very large market, which would definitely not be in their long-term interests.

The same could be said for short-cutting environmental laws or taking advantage of the uneducated, but hey, the guys running companies now will be rich, and long gone before it hurts the company. Let's face it, people are making decisions for these companies. People generally make decisions with their own interests in mind. Who cares what the company does after they've moved on and have sold their stock?

Maybe some some responsibility should be placed these companies...it just seems that JK's kind of machiavellian attitude is exactly what is ruining our culture and our planet. Doing what is in the best iterests of everyone is in everyone's best interests.
