I think you're absolutely right. Google's way of doing things is completely unacceptable! They are obviously going to plunge their company into a financial morass of.... hold on, GOOG just dropped to my strike price. I need to go make a major purchase!
Later, suckers!
I agree. It's a great concept, and I eagerly await the next version. right now, however, it doesn't correctly go from one song to another for me, it doesn't have a lot of features that I'd like, and doesn't support my iPod.
I can live without iPod support, but things like re-ordering based on columns, proper shuffle, etc...especially playing more than one song without me having to click "next"...these are features that I'm willing to put up with "DRM ridden" iTunes for.
I'd noticed a few problems with iTunes before, such as needing to authorize music on new computers, etc. I know it's not much of a headache, but when I moved to a new job, I moved music to my new work computer, and it made me "re-authorize" my songs for that computer. Guh...I realize that they're trying to stop me from spreading my songs to everyone I know, but what a hassle.
The real irritation came when I tried to burn an MP3 cd to play in my truck. My truck's stereo can play MP3 cds, but you can't burn a purchase AAC file to an MP3 cd. I didn't know this until I tried it, and by the time I figured it out, it was too late to take my new Kanye West CD with me to the mountain.
Sure, I can always burn my AACs to a music CD, and then rip them back into MP3 format, but what a pain in the ass. I could also just get an AAC cracker and convert them directly to MP3, but what a pain in the ass. It seems to me that DRM is not really protecting content through technology, but through irritation.
They're taking all of the fun out of it! What's the point of modding your case if it doesn't involve power tools and the risk of damage to expensive components?!
WTF? Offtopic? How can I be modded offtopic for making a joke about people being pedantic when they are being self-admittedly pedantic?
Someone must have been a real pedant to be so on topic.
Congratulations! You are formally invited to attend a meeting of the International League of Pedants! Please arrive at precisely 1927 (notice the lack of a colon; it's military time) at Elk's Lodge 52 on Weinburger Rd. Any later, and the cucumber sandwiches with be mushy, and no pedant likes mushy cucumber sandwiches.
This is the exact sort of societal pressure, or "tyranny", that John Stuart Mill so railed against in "On Liberty". Why should free expression be dependent on populist pressures? It is populist pressures that led to the Planet cancelling the contract in the first place.
All I need is tritium, which is so rare that there's only 25 tons of it on the entire planet. And with these fancy new robotic arms that I made, fusion's a snap to control!
Why aren't I mentioned in these articles? I'm far beyond everyone else. So what if I haven't actually done it before, or if I have no safety backups?
I'm curious where you served. No disrespect at all intended.
I had some buddies in the 82nd who were in Somalia and knew some guys who'd been in Bosnia, and we had a couple of guys who'd been in the first Iraq war. Thankfully, I never "got the chance" to go to war.
Incidentally, I agree with the sibling poster who says that it's better to have people play FPS to learn that they're not invulnerable.
I used to work for Webtrends doing technical support (yecch!) so I feel like I have some good insight into web analysis and it's pitfalls and benefits, as well as the types of people who use it. The biggest problems by far that were encountered was setup-configuration and graph interpretation. I think that both of these problems will be increased in a program like this, and that the cool factor provided by the model will not offset these problems for most serious webmasters.
I see a couple of problems with setup and configuration, but the biggest without doubt is "can it handle dynamic pages?" Is it able to discern the difference by pages when that difference is controlled by a URI query? What if the dynamic parameters are passed in with a POST? Will this require the tracking on each page to be modified? Many large companies use dynamic websites, so this could be a serious barrier.
As far as interpretation problems go, I think it's pretty cool that this software is able to give graphic metaphors for traffic on a web site, but it's hard to use abstract metaphors when doing business or web traffic analysis.
I think that this is going to be a tool, almost exclusively, of small websites that are able to tweak their web pages on a whim (unlike large companies are able to do, in most cases), which makes the price point even more of a problem. Thirty bucks a month?! That's a lot of money for someone who's running a small site, it could be more than their hosting fees.
It's a cool idea, and I like to see the virtual world evolving, but I don't think that this is going to do well.
Aside from the bandwidth-sucking-up-considerations, I love this idea! It would be like when you try to download things from eDonkey, there's just a bunch of worthless shite, or trying to read your email.
what do they say in that new chronicles of riddick movie? Sometimes you have to fight evil with a different type of evil.
As long as the interference from the WiFi doesn't impinge on Rupert Murdoch's broadcasting, what does Michael Powell care? This kid has been in the pocket of the big 3 for his entire time as Chairman of the FCC.
If there was any doubt that this new regulation would cause problems for the media giants, there's no way it would happen.
between "layman" and "academic". I think that it's been misused by neo-conservatives to create a false divide between the "ordinary Americans" and "those leftist urban fuck-nuts".
To see a decent example of what he's talking about, check out The Political Compass. I'll be the first to admit that the questions have a liberal bias, but my friends in GA took the test and ended up about where they thought appropriate, so it can't be TOO skewed.
Seriously, though, if you're going to say that McCarthyism is a fiction made up by the "Liberal Media", then I expect you to claim that the Holocaust was a myth perpetuated by those damn Jews and that mankind never landed on the moon.
Even if you ARE seriously making that statement, there are irrefutable episodes in history where Americans have made a mockery of our own Constitution.
I agree with him completely. And I would rather take my chances with some idiot with a box cutter than have my girlfriends luggage ripped apart every time we fly because she keeps forgetting to remove her eyebrow scissors from her toiletry kit.
Sacrificing liberty in the name of security is like being the kid who never makes friends because he's afraid to leave the house. He might be safe, but he's going to be fucked up in the head.
No offense to you personally, but why do you think that this is the first time that our government has pissed on the constitution? I can think of many, many other instance of "Constitutional Urination".
Indian wars, which were prosecuted without leave from Congress.
From the article: The second paragraph read: "The provision under challenge allows an FBI agent to write a letter demanding the disclosure of the name, screen names, addresses, e-mail header information, and other sensitive information held by 'electronic communication service providers.' "
Phew, I'm safe! My internet isn't really a connection service for me, I only DOWNLOAD my kiddie pr0n!
And here I was worried it would never happen.

aha, thanks for the reply. let me know if you need help with that :)
As close as I can figure, it means "Others hate SQL" . Is that right?
Obviously, some of you have been breaking the first rule.
Meet me behind Safeway at 3 oclock and I'll hand out homework assignments.
I think that, by looking at the current US govt, it's easy to see that PLENTY of people are stupid enough to give evil power. All the power it wants.
Let the flames begin.

When FUD gave them bad press, they made PRESSADE.

But there weren't any Green party senators when the PATRIOT act passed! We should all vote for Nader!
