Actually I'm surprised that it was Sony rather than Apple that came up with this idea.

Well, Apple certainly has come up with the idea even though they haven't yet realized it.

    "Back-Side Interface for Hand-Held Devices"

    Abstract:
An electronic device uses separate surfaces for input and output. One of the surfaces (e.g., the bottom) includes a force-sensitive touch-surface through which a user provides input (e.g., cursor manipulation and control element selection). On a second surface (e.g., the top), a display element is used to present information appropriate to the device's function (e.g., video information), one or more control elements and a cursor. The cursor is controlled through manipulation of the back-side touch-surface. The cursor identifies where on the back-side touch-surface the user's finger has made contact. When the cursor is positioned over the desired control element, the user selects or activates the function associated with the control element by applying pressure to the force-sensitive touch-surface with their finger. Accordingly, the electronic device may be operated with a single hand, wherein cursor movement and control element selection may be accomplished without lifting one's finger.

Personally, I find FBSD, Debian, Slackware, and the majority of GNU software to be quite usable.

Yeah. But usability, or general graphic design for that matter, is not about what any one person thinks.

Anyone who has little to no concept of even the fundamentals of graphic design or how to test their code for performance , accuracy, recall and the emotional response and also know how to act according to the results should stay away from releasing anything but perls scripts for sorting their own collection of humorous videos and funny pictures in descending order of degree of dignity.

This is an iterative process that should be convergent, and if it is not then you will not know if your code is even worth anything at all for the end user. If you never test you will never know. Well, until someone with a clue does what you do but the proper way.

What do you base your decisions on today? Favorite colors?

Performance (how much time, and how many steps, are required for people to complete basic tasks)
Accuracy (how many mistakes did people make and were they fatal or recoverable with the right information?)
Recall (how much does the person remember afterwards or after periods of non-use?)
Emotional response (how does the person feel about the tasks completed?)

Meanwhile, Google will continue to evolve their ui to be even more simple and easier to use and add new technology as new services instead of putting it all on the search page.

How much better than Google does MS Search have to be to start pulling over users from Google? Does MS have any new technology that Google don't have access to? I don't think so.
