> On the other side of the spectrum I see C/C++ programmers and DBA's with job offers all over the place.
What city is this?
How many years of C/C++ experience (I have 3 professional, post-college full-life-cycle, plus several internships), scripting, TCL/TK, and I have plenty of experience with SAS.
Of course, I also think it's bad since I know people who are just graduating college, and those who graduated before me with real jobs unemployed right now. What city has job offerings like that?
That's right, soon you will have the exciting opportunity to represent a high school of 30 people who have the nerds on the same team as the jocks (playing far far left wide reciever, and ineffective right tackle).
All the excitement without the hassle of driving 4 hours to the next small-town to play football against.
This game will include such 8-Man football highlight towns as Hartington, NE, Dix, NE, Ffriend, NE, Meade, KS, and Glendo, WY.
Imagine the heart pounding action of this extreme sport as you hope your only decent player (QB, Safety and Field Goal Kicker) makes it through the season without injury.
They forgot to add in the costs of teaching employees how to use the new Linux system, retraining administrators and help desk employees to support the software and how in the long run it would be cheaper to just buy new software every year.
Not only that, they forgot what would happen if the community stopped support of Linux overnight, or where would they go if Linux went out of business next year?
In the end, will it really save money? I think the anser is clear.
If I missed one of the points, please correct me. I hope this becomes a huge success and only encourages other governments to adopt open-source software.
We knew this was the strategy they have been building towards. Much like Dumbledore we must learn to keep our allies at a distance, lest they become a snake and bite us with their poison music files.
What we must do to survive is to make sure the battle we fight is in front of the ministry of magic so that everyone will see what evils the RIAA has in store for everyone, and to also show the world he-who-must-not-be-named is back.
So gather arms, and start working in secret ways to continue learning new and unique file-trading secrets. We might have to flood the p2p networks with 1kb text files renamed to popular mp3 music files. Something that wouldn't take any time to download or discredit as an mp3, but enough to fool the evil Death Eaters into thinking these files were in fact, the real mp3 files they wanted.
So Fight brave young Potter, fight to live another day!
I'm a law abiding citizen without a mark on my record, and I can still say: fuck the police
This is why the parent should be modded up. We live in a free society, a society where you can tell the authorities where to shove it, and not be abused for it.
No this doesn't solve the problem. The police system is overtaxed, and the entire judicial system in place was built with the purpose of keeping people out of prison and free. Because the system was built that way, people abuse it and push it to the max, and the only real authority is when the major crimes are built.
They might only have 2 people with credentials to dust for fingerprints, and homocides taking up their time. The whole system is overtaxed.
There are already 7 asshats named Skywalker, and 58 variants of the name.
"Do you want to pet my wookie" is not an appropriate question, it was worn out well before the first day was over.
One last thing: If someone asks you if you are a god, you say YES!
There should be a more definite version of what's legal and illegal in promoting software. If you're making ludicrous claims just to get press, and never intend on backing things up, there should be consequences.
If you fully intend on writing the software to implement what you hype, then it should not be as big an offence.
The problem is sorting things out. Some of it would become obvious with code audits, but you could just as easily gloss over enough BS code to make it look like fake hype is the real deal.
I just realized why my coffee tastes like crapinade.

Before everyone goes on a rant about how this is Minority Report or how it's useless to suggest crime happens in poor neighborhoods (duh!) remember what this tool will most likely be used for: placing officers where they will do the most good.
It isn't a presumption of guilt, or arrest before a crime is attempted (minority report). This will be used to determine how many beat officers are needed to reduce crime in an area and if they are in fact reducing the amount of crime.
Of course you can use statistics to prove anything, 75% of everyone knows that.
insteading of spewing what sounds like second-hand drivel.
You pretty much hit the nail on the head with that one. I have never understood why I get moderated the way I do on slashdot, really. My best posts usually get a 3 or less, while my ranting and drivel is either a one or five. The moderation was much better when it was a smaller site.
The only person I was truly trying to get through with this particular post was the parent (abcxyz). I went about it in the wrong manner, as you pointed out. I should have pointed them to newssites like Guerrilla News and articles relating to why this is bad other than spewing what I gleamed from them.
Again, I don't understand why some posts are moderated the way they are. I definitely agree with you on one thing, if I make a point and want to be taken seriously, I must bring out facts, and have them lined up to back up my hypothesis.
Now if this post gets moderated past 5 hell is truly freezing over.
Not that that works all that well. Columnist Jon Carroll of the San Francisco Chronicle noted recently that newspapers no longer bother with fact checkers. Except when someone thinks that there might be a story in someone else's sloppy story, nothing gets checked, ever -- even by the editorial folks at that newspaper.
Really? That doesn't suprise me, and at the same time makes a part of me cringe.
Thank you for pointing it out.
This is great news. Now we just need to get people with older record collections to rip them to MP3 so we can properly archive music before it's lost forever.
Just think of all the music produced in the 20's, 30's and 40's that was never remastered and released on CD. Big Band Swing, Jazz, Blue Grass, tons of music that still has a copyright on it (thank you disney), but the copyright owner doesn't want to keep current in their catalog (too expensive). Get this music out on Kazaa, and introduce yourself to a generation of music that is slowly being lost.
The Newspapers, TV Stations, and Radio stations will soon have the same parent company.
In reality this will hurt in that Newspapers will be bought by bigger corporations (clear channel), and the content will be dumbed down, local personalities will be "Right-sized" to control profit margins in place of Market researched personalities.
This hurts, and you will notice the difference. Right now newspapers and newsstations keep each other in check by double-checking facts. Soon you will have one person double-checking facts for the radio, newspaper, and television. You get one slant, one idea, and one perspective from all three. That is where the diversity will be lost. I hope you like reading BBC newspapers over the internet, because soon that's where the best news you get will come from.
You learned hard life lessons the hard way. That isn't what bothers me about your post.
College isn't for everyone, that isn't what bothers me about your post.
What you seem to have missed about college is a different freedom. Not a financial freedom, but freedom of the mind. The ability to think for yourself, discover what you enjoy, set up a plan to achieve that goal, and achieve it. If college fails to do this for kids, then the college failed them (Or the kid didn't participate in college fruitfully).
If you love your job, why retire at 40? If you truly love your job, you'll stick with it until they force you to retire. College is about opening up your mind so you can be your own boss and start a company if thats what you want, or work for someone else if you would prefer that.
College isn't about getting the best paying job in the world. When someone tries to sell it as such, THAT is the problem, an education is more than money.
Since you're your own boss, doesn't that mean you are spying on yourself 24-7?
I have a shampoo recommendation for you:
