Their goal is obviously to disrupt communications, not to avoid being tracked. If they knew we were using their phones to track them, they could use that as an advantage to setup traps and make us confident of their whereabouts. They could always just remove the batteries or stuff the phone in a lead box or whatever. If you can't call for help it makes the decision to resist or just do whatever these psychopaths want a much simpler one.

At the ripe old age of 12 I was wondering if perhaps I could figure out how to get my brain to work like that all the time so I could be a superhero.

That's not true. There is no excuse for leaving your network open. Every new access point comes with a CD that walks you through setting it up properly. If you got an access point before it was easy, well, it's your responsibility to learn how to use it. If you need wireless and can't be bothered to set it up yourself, you should hire someone with a clue to do it for you. If you set it up as an open network you have no right to be upset about other people using it.

You missed my point. It's the software that you're running on your computer that is requiring administrative approval and thus training you to click the "whatever" button. Obviously it can't be enough. The only way to really secure a computer is to pull the plug. We all know that. We can at least give people the tools they need to protect themselves. Whether they use them or not- that's up to them.

Idiots are suing McDs for making food that they HAVE to eat that isn't healthy. I say, take the warnings off the coffee cups. Give people a little respect. Expect them to behave responsibly and they will. Treat them like sheep and they will become sheep.

In Windows Vista, autorun is not a danger. Not any more than browsing a web site, anyhow. It asks you before it lets you do anything. Maybe rather than bashing the seemingly endless requests for administrative access, people should realize that the applications they're running shouldn't need it anyway.

  17. Re:Little-Known Facts on Piracy Forced id's Hand To Multiplatform Gaming · · Score: 1

Many gamers take their hobby a lot more seriously than you do. I don't watch TV, I rarely go out. I play computer games. A night with the guys for me is firing up Ventrilo and playing some Starcraft or something. Since gaming is one of my only recreational outlets, the money I do spend on entertainment goes to new hardware or games. With my MMO addiction I don't really have time to play all of the games that come out but my non-MMO friends that buy $55 games every week.

I wouldn't complain if games were cheaper but there are a lot of us that have no problem with the price tag on a good game, particularly if it is a multiplayer title. I've logged several hundred hours each on Team Fortress, Battlefield 2, Wolfenstein ET (free btw! yay, go id), Counterstrike, Starcraft, Warcraft I, II, III, Command & Conquer, Age of Empires... You can't rent 100 movies for $55. I have several hundred DAYS in Dark Age of Camelot and World of Warcraft.

Maybe my experience is different because I avoid any game that doesn't have cooperative teamplay. I'm not interested in playing without my friends. I don't have (or really want) a huge amount of twitch gaming talent and I play with people who are more interested in working together to beat superior firepower and skill with coordination and strategy (which is a skill in itself, I suppose).

The whole point of our system of government is to elect officials that we respect to make decisions for the country. What's the percentage of computers in the US that are trojaned right now? People are stupid. Plus, some issues are sensitive and can't be discussed publicly but still need an executive decision. It's much better to pay someone who can manage a staff that helps them make educated, smart decisions. You people that call our politicians idiots are not qualified to vote on issues. In general, they don't make uneducated decisions and you simply do not have the information that was available to them when making each choice. They may be corrupt or have a difference of opinion from you but there are some smart people in Washington.

Our system of government is pretty sweet. I don't trust you to make an educated choice in the heat of the moment. I really don't. I didn't trust Bill Clinton either, and you may not trust GWB, but I trust both of them more than I trust you. Nothing personal. They have a track record and are fairly consistent with that. Bill Clinton went with whatever he thought the public would see in a positive light, and GWB went with what he thought was right. In hindsight, they were both wrong in many cases. I personally think that GWB makes good choices given the information that he has at hand. You're free to vote for someone else. But leave the complicated issues to the people who spend most of their waking moments pondering them.
