  1. Re:what's really in Gibbon and Hippo? on Ubuntu Hardy Heron Announced · · Score: 1

The thing with Ubuntu releases are that they are based on calendar dates. They want to release the next version in October of this year. Which means that if some of the goals aren't met, they are put aside until the next release. (ie: Bulletproof X11) They really don't want to miss their release window, because it will be a mess for their next release.

The reasoning behind this is that they base each release on the latest version of Gnome. Gnome releases every six months. So Ubuntu releases a month or so after Gnome. If they delay a release, they either delay all future releases (which will get them off-sync with Gnome), or have a shortened next release cycle (which is what happened with 6.06 -> 6.10), meaning a less interesting next release (as many considered 6.10).

I made the mistake of downloading version 2 when it was available. It was definitely a downgrade rather than an upgrade, and I did go back to version one for a while. I finally realized that I wanted to use a player that respected me, and started using winamp.

  6. Re:I want to know why she healed - what caused it on Girl's Heart Regenerates With Artificial Assist · · Score: 2, Informative

It's not that the heart "healed". What happens after a serious injury to the heart (whether a heart attack, viral infection, or anything else), is that the heart becomes weaker and tries to adapt. Things that physicians do to help the heart adapt in the right way (as opposed to the wrong way) include assist devices that will pump the blood forward. These include artificial hearts, left ventricular and biventricular assist devices, and intra-aortic balloon pumps. Other things that help people along are medications that help the heart rest and prevent the maladaptation that the heart will do on it's own if left to it's own means (the maladaptation is known as negative remodelling).

Given enough time, the heart may beat more effectively. I know a number of people whos hearts are pumping out less than 10 percent of the blood that enters it (normal is to pump out ~60 percent). Some of these people are crippled and await heart transplantation. A few, however, are out chasing the girls (and boys), and you wouldn't have any idea that they had a medical problem until you saw the number of medications that they take to stay well.

Frankly, I'm not sure what the article is trying to state.

If the code is released under GPLv3, then modifications of the code must be able to run on the same hardware. It doesn't matter if the key to run the code is a checksum or a password to give the hypervisor. Either way, if modification of the client cannot be dropped into the place of the original client (either to run on the same hardware or the same hypervisor), it's in abuse of the GPLv3.

Actually, all it takes is for one of the main package maintainers to change licenses for their packages. For instance, Samba (which is used for networking and file sharing with MSwindows systems) will have future versions released under GPL v3. Either Novell uses the newer Samba (which will trap Microsoft), or it does not use the newer Samba (and gets left behind).

This, of course, is based on the assumption that Microsoft distributing coupons for SuSE is akin to distributing the software.

My guess is that iWork does stuff that is not currently defined in the ODF format. My hope is that the commission that is in charge of ODF will extend it to support everything available in iWork. (Those slide transitions in the iWork presentation software are pretty freakin' cool!)

It's not that the government shouldn't wiretap their own population. Of course, they should be able to. The FISA courts are secret so that they can get warrants to do this sort of thing. It's when the government doesn't bother getting the warrants that things get illegal.

Once he saw the iMac, he was sold. I haven't had to touch his system since the initial software setup and showing him how things worked, over a year and a half ago.

I still go to his place every few months, and run software update while I'm there, but he doesn't call me for problems ever.

He did call to go to the store with him to get an iPhone and help him install it. Once I talked him through that, he was embarrassed that he even had to ask.

By the way, my mom now complains that he is always in front of the computer. Was never a problem when he had MSWindows machines for over a decade. He just never used them much. Now he's playing around with his iTunes collections, and iPhoto, and email and g-d only knows what else.
