The people in the Department of Defense always defend military action. Military action is their job.
That guy is ex-military. Moreover, Powell as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs insisted that diplomacy be exhausted first before the First Iraq War. Not all in the military are war hawks. It is not that simple and Americans need to critically debate these issues.
It is very obvious that the pre-war Iraq intelligence was a sales pitch. The administration simply chose to go to war and made sure that the Congress and the American people went along with it. To accomplished this, they need to make a strong case that Iraq was a national security threat. You not going include contradictions in the intelligence in making that case. Ultimately, the system of check and balances failed with the branch and within Congress. I certainly feel that this administration is one of "shortcuts". If you want a war in Iraq, fudge the intelligence. If you want progress in the "war on terror", torture, detain indefinitely, violate another country's sovereignty, and unconstitutionally spy on your own citizens. If you want to boost the economy, give tax cuts despite rising deficits and funding a reconstruction and a war. The only question on Iraq I have personally is why Iraq. I don't believe it is democracy in the Middle East or Sadamn was a really evil guy. Revenge? Oil? Haliburton?
I not surprise by this. The administration survives by its ability to control the flow information to the public and relies on spin heavily. George Bush is a walking diaster but with spin at worst he looks like an average president. His administration backed out of Kyoto and deregulated several industries with respect to emission guidelines all the while spouting that global warming needs more study. Now, it would not look good on his part if NASA says global warming is a reality and its getting worst. So, politicians tone down anything that gets to the press and leans on anyone that will leak any contradiction. All the while, the winters are warmer, the hurricanes are getting stronger (remember New Orleans), and energy costs are skyrocketing (I guess the deregulation savings don't get passed on to the consumer).
Yeah, I agree with main gist of his statement. Though I sure the Mac OSX division is not a failed project but a success, they have been slugging it out in the OS market for 22 years and only command a small market percentage. They arguably, at present, have better OS than XP but it is difficult to change the mindset that XP is standard. So, I can't imagine a viable strategy to take on Microsoft in its key market with technology that can compete with Vista with an OS that is given away for free. Google like any other company needs revenue. Besides, we are thinking too much in a box. The desktop OS may not be as important as embedded OS for devices, phones, cars, or server OS for an ever expanding Internet
Enough with the cliches, especially that one. Try an analogy. Let's see. "Be as skeptical as reading G.W. Bush's interpretation of Superstring Theory" Doesn't quite roll off the tongue but you get the point.

I accept the "troll of year" award. I like to thank American culture for this one. Let the moderation begin!!!
I respect Bill Gates a lot. He is a very smart yet awkward guy. What he and his wife do with their charities should be commended. He still has his hair. But, I would really try to emulate Steve Jobs more. He is just as smart but he has charisma. His charisma helps him to communicate his ideas and get people to really believe in them. A genius is nothing if he can't get his ideas across. He was really the only one to save Apple from buyout oblivion. I believe the whole tech industry is better for it and consumers whether Apple or PC have better products because of it. Now, he is bald, but it doesn't seem to slow him down.
So, what you are saying then is that Intel chipset don't support Firewire 800. I think that it is the real reason and nothing to do with Apple grand master plan to phase out FW. Apple isn't designing its own boards anymore, pure and simple.
Yeah, I agree. Read between the lines and you sense an ulterior motive. Gee, I wonder does his company or firm offer software auditing tools or as you say get compensated by Apple for findng bugs and keeping them secret. You know, that sounds like blackmail or maybe extortion (I can't tell, I get those two mixed up all the time).
Here is a quick summary of the benchmark articles (10 or so) I read this week.
- PowerPC Application that are not universal binaries will run faster on a G5 than CoreDuo. Well DUH, they have to be translated through Rosetta first!!
- Universal Apllication show slighly better performance for single thread apps and higher performance for multithreaded applications on CoreDuo. Again duh, I would expect a dual core system to outperform a single core system.
- Macs still suck at games but in all fairness, they were running them in Rosetta.
- There is only a handful of universal application and in all likelihood, they came with your computer
No more articles till are more universal applications out. No more articles where the author counts the number of icon bounces. No more article where the author times the boot up. I am pretty sure we have figure whether or not to buy a new Intel Mac at this point.
I am sorry but does Apple make a great fortune on the iTunes Store? Last time I heard, they were just breaking even. The whole point of the store was to sell more ipods. It work in my case. I never purchased music before iTunes because I didn't like searching all day through Walmart or BestBuy for CDs. Once I had purchase a music collection from iTunes, I bought an iPod to listen to it. Now, what is in it for Google? Is $.10 or $.5 profit per song really worth the effort or are they releasing their own "ipod killer" along with their own proprietary DRM to satisfy the Music Gods.
Microsoft releases Windows XP, Macintosh Edition or Virtual PC for Intel Macs. You really need to up the bounty. I know I would go through at least 2 iMacs before I figure out how to boot XP. 2800-2400= 400 which is not worth it.
Microsoft is undeniably the king of Desktop OSes and Office suites. But whenever they use their huge cash stockpiles to venture into other markets, they are not as successful. For instance, the Xbox isn't going to dethrone Sony's Playstation. EA is pretty much king of the hill in PC gaming. I also choose Logitech for my keyboards and mice. Google has wiped the floor with them in search portal and internet service market. When it comes to mp3 players, they are not going to wipe out the iPod/iTunes juggernaut. They may have the money but they don't have the talent. I just don't see Microsoft as a being player because they can't bring out a really novel product. In some markets, it takes more than just being able to outlast your competitor to become a dominate player.
Dude, that was just the parts and assembly. The article pointed out clearly that the price of the software was not included. Some of the cost of the system is used to fund development of the Mac OSX, iLife, and other smaller apps (ical, Address book, Safari) along with the licences for Quicken. You don't have a Macintosh without these things bundled with the computer. That might add anoter $200 to the cost of manufacturing which means apple is making more like 20%. I personally think that is reasonable considering that it is better designed than most Wintel PC's out there.
I found downlaoding tv shows very useful. I love the fact that it is commercial free, SciFi commercials are long and annoying. I can watch the shows when I want. I can't really justify spending my Friday nights at home just to watch BG and SG1. I really need to find a girlfriend. So, it has been very helpful. They should add more shows like SG1.
-Wallstreet 250 Mhz- Display failed after 3 years, 6 months, However, powerbook still runs with an external display
-Pismo Powerbook (2000)- Hard drive problems with noise, DVD drive failed after 14 months ($100 fix), Soundcard Failed after 3 years ($300+ fix), ATA Interface failed after 5 years 6months
-Titanium Powerbook-500 Mhz (2001)- DVD failed after 18 months, Modem failed under warranty, Display has vertical lines after 3 years, Paint rubs off after 1 year and chassis crack after 2 years
- iBook (700 Mhz)- no problems at time, 3 Years old
- Aluminum Powerbook 1.5 Ghz- No problems at this time, 1 year 3months
- Aluminum Powerbook 1.67 Ghz- No Problems at this time except for a malfunctioning pixel, 8 months
Reliability has been improving over the years; however, experience dictates an extended warranty is a must when purchasing a new Apple laptop. Despite the issues that I have experience, I will still recommend Apple notebooks as they best support available through phone, retail outlets, and forums that will resolve any issues quickly and painlessly. Also, I haven't had a problem with an IBM thinkpad we have for 2.5 years or a Gateway that my sister has had for 4 years
How do you get out of the device quickly? What affect does this have on a soldier's mobility?. Can he run if he is ambushed? With warfare the way it is today, he mostly won't know when the bullets will start flying. So mobility is key to increasing the survival rate of our soldiers in the field. The thing looks pretty clunky to me so it maybe better to designed a robot to carry the gear and free the soldier to engage the enemy at moments notice.
Yeah, it is probably a shitty AI. You know- next to Dvorak columns- there are equally a large number of stories about DVORAK keyboards that are even more pointless. It must be keyed to name "Dvorak" and posts stories automatically.
The stories are getting repetitive. Case in point: Yet another Dvorak column!!! Is this guy some tech guru. Judging the adjectives from endless repetitive comments- hack, flamebait, troll, has made a career out of spouting sensational bullshit, fool; one would think not. Yet, his columns must posted more than any other columnist. So, with this and the endless duplicate stories, is Slashdot being run auto pilot with a real shitty AI. Is Taco on a beach in Maui, Timothy in Rome, or Zonk on safari? Editors!! Come back to us, RTFA for a change and can you pick articles for us simple folk with IQ of at least 3 digits can enjoy and spout endless comments that no one will read.

You forgot number 8:
Billions of dollars to fund the entire operation despite weapons ban and sanctions.

yeah, I wouldn't worry too much. With this zig-zag capability, Russia is more likely to hit Mexico than the US.

Yeah, but the sad fact is that it only applies to slashdot geeks. We are on the endangered species list as a result.
