  1. Engineers=Lawyers on Can Apple + AT&T Shut Down iPhone Unlockers? · · Score: 1

I always wonder why the Engineering majors in college choose law as their career. I now understand. Innovation is out and lawsuits are in! AT&T will rather spend money on a lawyer enforcing stupid lock-ins than pay an engineer to develop a better network. A person with a new iPhone can't choose AT&T because it has the good network and compliments the iPhone well. He must either be contractually obligated to it or have no alternative from a competing carrier. Wow, you have to love America just to stand the stench of living here.

  2. Re:Why don't they just standardize on OpenGL... on Valve Says Choice to Make DX10 Vista-Only Hurt PC Gaming · · Score: 1

Here is a link to the comparison of OpenGL and DirectX. This excerpt answers your question:

Making games that use OpenGL while using the non-Direct3D portion of the DirectX API is no more difficult than making a game using all of the DirectX API. The decision to use Direct3D over OpenGL was made from simple pragmatism: in those days, OpenGL implementations were difficult to work with.[citation needed] Writing an OpenGL implementation requires implementing every feature of OpenGL, even if the hardware doesn't support it. If the hardware can't do it, you have to write a software rasterizer that can handle that feature. This feature is very useful if performance is not a primary goal, such as in professional graphics applications or off-line renderers; it guarantees the existence of functionality. However, in a game situation, where a loss of performance can destroy the feeling of the game, it is more desirable to know that the functionality doesn't exist and to simply avoid using it.

Opengl had certain features that may have hinder the gaming performance early on. That gave DirectX the base and the inertia to dominate the gaming market. I would expect that game developers expertise lie mostly in DirectX. Though OpenGL is now viable, Microsoft would have to be woefully negligent on DirectX to warrant the productivity lost switching to it.

I am mac user. I love Apple computers. I think currently Mac OSX is the best operating system out there. However, gaming on the Mac platform is one of its most glaring (frightening) weaknesses. The weakness stems from Apple's stringent control of the Macintosh platform. The control limits the Macintosh platform to a paradigm dictated by Apple. With the exception of the Mac Pro, all current systems Apple sell are intended not to change over their lifetime (except for memory). This situation is advantageous for Apple but terrible for gaming. Gamers like/need to upgrade their systems. In addition, Apple doesn't design any system with gaming as a priority. Gamers who want Mac OS X but are not satify with Apples offerings are left with one option. (buy a PC). For those reasons, I can't see any reason that game developer will take the Mac platform seriously. This deprives the platform of viable avenue of growth and limits its potential. Gaming isn't the only avenue that Apple cedes away to Windows. How long can the Mac platform live on just the creative market?

  9. Re:Read the E.O. on Federal Science Gets More Politicized · · Score: 1

I read the E.O. From 12866, the original goal was to make the process of creating regulations more effective and efficient. It provides guidelines for agencies to assest the impact of regulation on various sectors of the economy and to minimize the impact. It also directs agencies to finds ways to overcome conflicts arising from different interpretations by different agencies. The Executive Branch is not a homogeneous entity but a heterogenous one. Agencies are not uniform in their interpretations and conclusion with each other and the Executive Branch is too large to micromanage from the top. The original E.O. was intended to begin addressing those issues.

The recent amendments seem to focus on two thing- guidance documents and the "Regulation Policy Officer". The former might be a damage control measure as the administration is in opposition with the Legislative Branch. By using the OIRA and OMB, the President can limit the leverage the Congress can obtain from agency conflicts. The latter is more interesting.

Within 60 days of the date of this Executive order, each agency head shall designate one of the agency's Presidential Appointees to be its Regulatory Policy Officer, advise OMB of such designation, and annually update OMB on the status of this designation. The Regulatory Policy Officer shall be involved at each stage of the regulatory process to foster the development of effective, innovative, and least burdensome regulations and to further the principles set forth in this Executive order.
The Excutive employs two types of employees. One is the regular civil servants who acquired the job through meritocratic system. The other is appointed by the President who are loyal to him and his priorities. The President is exerting more political control on the regulatory process by giving his appointees a strong influence over the process. The intention of this is to get more of his priorities turn over to regulation in the limited time he has left. Instead of revising the regulations after they are written, the administration is doing it from the beginning in the conception phase.

The Excutive Branch is the President "Ship" and he can run anyway he wants so long as it at least sits in the gray area of legality. I only fret from this because I firmly believe that the priorities of the President is not shared with the majority of Americans

I believe that democracy is faltering because ordinary American are detached from the political process. The past seven years have seem to be a "vote and forget". That reality is changing as the politicians of both parties are running this government into the ground. I only suggest this exercise so as to demonstrate how we can become more familiar with the how our government works. Moreover, I hope we as citizens can develop ways to associate the policies of our government with the officials we delegated to set them. For more information of this EO, go to wikipedia.

A species would have an easier time adapting itself to Earth than adapting some other lifeless body to its physiology. In addition, the distance between Earth-type worlds might be extremely large- hundereds of light years.
