  1. Better late than never... on MP3 Market Approaching Critical Mass · · Score: 1

I think it's a little late to say that a support industry is about to ignite for iPods and other music players. The last 20% of every issue of MacWorld has been full of iPod accessories for well over a year now. I'd say that the support industry ignited some time ago, and now has lots of nice coals for cooking.

I am one of those people. OS X 10.4, new Quicken and new iLife, purchased separately, would cost almost as much as a Mac mini.

As soon as Mac mini's are shipping with OS X 10.4, I'm ordering one. And if they're shipping with a coupon, or OS X 10.3 on the HD with a 10.4 updater, even better! It will make it easier to install 10.4 on my other Macs.

I managed to pull that one off a few years ago when I bought my iMac G4 17". It had 10.1 on the HD with a 10.2 updater disc in the box.

I've read estimates that there were as many Canadians who volunteered to fight with the U.S. Army as there were Americans who fled to Canada to avoid the draft. Just that fact alone can start to explain why the U.S. has grown keener to participate in overseas wars, while Canada has grown less inclined.

In World War I, Canada sent 600,000 troops to fight in Europe. In World War II, Canada sent 1.5 million troops. To put this into perspective, you need to understand that the population of Canada during World War I was 6,000,000 people. The population during World War II was 15,000,000 people. That means that in each of the two world wars, Canada sent 10% of its population to fight in someone else's war.

You don't know the half of it! One time I was painstakingly hand-soldering a 68040, when I accidentally dropped my pince-nez. Well, when I got back to my work, I had inadvertently given the chip a half turn, and before I knew it I connected pin 25965 to 52692! Cringely is absolutely right, and I know that he is right because I figured out the exact same thing, but couldn't see the forest for the trees. I think that's Cringely's greatest ability -- to step back and see the big picture.

I recently bought an El Gato Eyehome. It's a $200 (now $150) device that grabs pictures, music and movies from Mac over ethernet. I loved my Eyehome, until the Mac mini was announced. At that point, I realized that I gave up the beautiful UI for something that was merely functional. Of course $200 vs a budget price Mac was too great a price difference last fall. Now, however, I'd certainly go to $500 for a living room computer.

What never occurred to me, but did occur to Cringely, is that I'm not the only one who feels that way. Millions of others will too. Bring on the iTunes Movie Store! For a preview, check out some of the music videos on the iTMS and pretend that they are movies you want to see!

  25. Re:Server software on Does Microsoft Cause Lower Software Prices? · · Score: 1

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the people who develop and/or use the alternatives, tend to be of a different mindset to those who use MS offerings.

You got that right. It took me years to convince the people I work for to leave ASP/MS SQL for PHP/MySQL. Every time I said "PHP/MySQL is a better platform because it puts less load on the server, it is easier to develop for, there are more open source libraries and utilities, and everything is free," I might as well have said, "But this amp goes to 11!"

Luckily, for me, there was a happy ending. When it came time to 'upgrade' MS SQL and a bunch of other Microsoft stuff, the $20k needed just wasn't available, and now we are close to 100% PHP/MySQL, and a slew of other open source stuff.

Here's something to keep people fighting the good fight: Encouraging open source is good for the economy. Every company who avoids the "Microsoft Tax" is more productive, more profitable, and more resilient to downturns. Every dollar saved on software can go to company profits, and ultimately, people's wages.
