  1. Re:did the RIAA write the apology? on RIAA Settles With 12-Year-Old Downloader · · Score: 1

She shouldn't be sorry (even though she probably isn't, she's probably just POed): the RIAA is a group of bastards.

I know this site is clogged with boycott the RIAA chants, but it must be taken seriously. Stop buying your latest video games and DVDs, stop listening to your tunes (or just download them). Go to the concert and support the artist, but download away. Download that pre-release film from the internet, since the light technicians and makeup artists were disposable anyway.

Reading stories like this make me sick, and the RIAA needs to be thrown into a fire. At the same time, how about we finally split Microsoft? Require our government to use Linux? Or maybe boycott the RIAA?

Nah, it'll never happen. People just need their entertainment too much, don't they?

As much as I would like to have more competition in the productivity and operating system markets, I don't see what is wrong with our current setup. Granted, Microsoft has 'roughed up' other businesses over the years, but I hardly think it monopolistic; in fact, I call it smart.

But to those who call Microsoft a monopoly, consider this: Microsoft needs innovation; they can't simply stop expanding Windows and its office suite, or they'll go bankrupt. Unlike a business such as oil (nearly every human on the planet is dependant upon oil), software requires innovation to make consumers purchase it. I'm staying with Windows 2000 because I don't feel XP offers anything substantial. If I don't make a purchase, Microsoft doesn't make money. With oil, however, the big oil guys don't need to change a thing if they have a monopoly, they simply have to let profits run in. Microsoft can't just sit back and take in profits.

  3. Re:Use AIM/ICQ/YIM instead? on MSN Messenger Access To Be Restricted · · Score: 4, Interesting

What people fail to realize, is that IM is regionalized. In other words, each region adopts its own IM and sticks to it. I live in a small town in North Dakota. Early on, ICQ was the popular instant messager, but due to Windows' inclusion of MSN Messenger, MSN Messenger won over this market. Today, maybe 5% of the community uses ICQ/AIM. The same applies for much of the rural midwest. The cities are another issue entirely, where AIM comes into play. I don't know the numbers, but I'm guessing that AIM is the most popular IM in New York and LA, due to the large number of AOL subscribers. The problem here, while IM allowed millions to be able to communicate and share in a way that chat rooms failed to do (simplicity for one), is that this communication may draw boundries, with one city being 'incompatible' with another city just a few miles away. The bridge programs (such as Trillian) can help to take these borders down, but only if Microsoft and AOL don't mind.

You're talking about years of language changes; you can't simply say that the French were correct, especially when you're dealing with pronunciation changes. English is German, it's Celtic, it's French, and it's full of lingo from around the globe. To make the judgement that one spelling is correct over another--when there are two societies separated by an ocean--is absurd.

Again, I'm taking this well beyond the reasonable level, but language is dictated by society. American's chose -er.

I just don't see this as a "good buy" right now; why put money down on one of these when the PSP is on the way (albeit next year) or when the GBA is a stellar system? Yes, your calendars, your notepad, and all your other programs can go with you, but if games are in mind, this isn't the best out there.

I think handheld computing could take off (again), so the question becomes: wait for a system with the power of my former desktop or buy now and get a system that might be as useless as today's PDA (well, it wouldn't be useless, but it's just such a damn hassle right now). I'd personally wait; I'll just keep using my Palm IIIxe on occasion.

It's a great idea, but it's just too small. I hate the cell phones that attempt to cram so much into such a small space, or the laptops that cram a 1600x1200 resolution into a 15" monitor. With only 2MB of memory and an extremely small screen in a relatively bulky enclosure, I just don't see this as a great product.

It definitely has its uses, but many would be well suited with a larger Palm Pilot or PocketPC.

    A motor-horse 2800KHz, 1MHz FSB and 8192KB RAM, all topped off with a beautiful, crisp, 2-bit (4-bit supported!), 640x480 monitor.

Apple really hit the mark with this beast, even including audiophiles that needed state-of-the-art mono sound output, capable of digital sound processing (line-in will be included in future models). When we listened to the latest hits in MIDI, they sounded remarkably better than our IBM-Compatible BEEP in QBasic.

Finally, the IIgs comes with a built-in floppy drive to store all your files, games, and, "most importantly music, " according to Steve Jobs.

"Now you can take all your music with you anywhere, over 1,000 digital music files in your pocket. The new floppy has no moving parts, meaning a better overall product for our users. We've got a real hit with the IIgs."

As you said, the "P4 fetches larger blocks with each miss", and that's true, thanks to its larger pipeline.

Granted, an increase in the FSB helps a lot, but not as much in, say, a Pentium 4 or an IBM 970, where a large FSB is vital. The Athlon is comparatively simple, and the 400MHz FSB is overkill.

Again, an Athlon XP 3000+ will be faster on a DDR400 system than in my old 133MHz FSB system.
