They quickly forget. Look at EasyPass. They sold this boondogle as a way for you to quickly pass through toll booths. Yet almost immediately after it was deployed, they used it to track your movements. Not just on the intended highway, but throughout the entire East Coast. EasyPass records have been used for other reasons besides just for travel. Many have been jailed because of these records. If you think this technology is benign, just go back and reread George Orwell's 1984.
I agree. Now that the news is more infotainment than real journalism, quality has really suffered. Also, since these news media are owned by a handfull of media monopolies, you basically get the same liberal bias from all of them. I no longer get my news from these sources. I prefer to get it from non-US sources like the BBC off the web. News in the US is longer designed to inform, and give different viewpoints. Instead its designed to brainwash the sheep into one viewpoint that the media have decided. Control of the opinion-molding media is nearly monolithic. All of the controlled media - television, radio, newspapers speak with a single voice, each reinforcing the other. Despite the appearance of variety, there is no real dissent, no alternative source of facts or ideas accessible to the great mass of people which might allow them to form opinions at odds with those of the media masters.
It was amazing to see the reporting when the FCC was deciding to revise ownership rules for media outlets. Not one "news" outlet reported this. Meetings for the people to voice their opinions on the subject were either supressed or were so underreported that it didn't matter. People were not informed, and so, new ownership rules were rammed down our throat. All this does is further chip at our freedoms and democracy in America.
It was even more frightening to see what happened to Dean. Basically, in one weekend, the powerful media companies sunk his presidential run, and anointed Kerry as the front runner. They kept showing him going nuts and screaming. Yet, when the real footage is shown, it is quite clear that he was screaming so that he can be heard over the roar of the crowd. A very reasonable thing to do at the time. The footage that the media monopolies kept playing over and over was artificial. Dean was using a microphone that filtered out the roar of the crowd. In this context, the media monopolies painted a picture to the American sheep that he was crazy and unstable. And now we have a choice of either ultra-left wing, Hanoi Jane loving, tax and spend liberal and ultra-right, war-monging, steal from the poor give to the rich conservative. Some choice. How does this help America remain strong?
I ran into this at a client I was consulting for.
I solved it by using a Maxtor OneTouch USB external hardrive. Don't use this if the machine doesn't have a USB 2.0 port (its just too slow on a V1.1 USB port). I placed a copy of Linux on this drive. I configured the machine for dual-boot and left the NTFS partition as the default. This way, the machine can be given back without any reversal of customizations, other than the config.ini file. I even set up a batch file that would restore the original file.
I guess you haven't read the Patriot Act and Patriot Act II. If Ashcroft wants to know how much beer you have bought, or what groceries you've bought, he doesn't have much difficulty. This may sound innoculous, but it can spiral into something sinister very easy. Lets just say that Ashcroft considers you an enemy (being just a liberal or black qualifies you). Lets say certain groceries can be used to make a bomb (cleaning solutions, fertilizer, lye etc.) All Ashcroft has to do is to use the Patriot act to get your grocery shopping, and sees that you've recently bought alot of these products. He tags you as a terrorist, and hauls you off to one of the those "material witness" or "enemy combatant" jail cells for the rest of your life. You are not allowed a lawyer or a trial, your family doesn't know where you are and can't see you. Do you think that this can't happen? All of the legal protections preventing this from occuring have been removed. Its only a mater of time before this occurs.
If you think that this nightmare situation can't occur, then you haven't read your history. Just look at Hitler's Germany, Stalin's Russia, Kim Jong Ils' North Korea, Sadaam's Iraq, the Soviet Union and today's China. Each of these countries spied on their citizens in order to capture those who would "subvert the state". The Patriot act and other legislation of its ilk are no different than the rules that the each of these countries passed. In fact, even the reason as to why they were enacted is the same (to protect the state).
So, will you be the poor slob who gets thrown into a jail cell, because you didn't protect your privacy?
Just don't buy this brand of beer. Boycott them. Tell others to boycott them. Write letters to their CEO and upper management as to why you are not buying their beer. Write letters to the editors of newspapers. Post this on protect our freedoms.
The reality is that as long as companies get a free pass on violating our rights, we will continue to lose them.
North Korea has a larger standing army, spends more GDP per year for military hardware (so much so, that their population is starving), and is the most repressive regime on the face of the world, that it puts China and Russia to shame. More have died in North Korean prisons than in the gulags of Stalin. They currently have nuclear weapons, and have missles that can reach the US. How much longer do you think it will be before Kim Jong Il wants more and decides to take it from the US? Do you think that maybe regimes like this are abit more evil than the US? Being powerful does not mean that you are inheritantly evil. It is the actions, lack of freedoms, the politization of religion, and the mass killings that make you evil.
Actually, this was done by M$ intentionally inorder for them to be able to access your machine. Just take a look at the Media Player 9 EULA. This EULA basically states that M$ has the right to access your machine at any time they feel like it. Get access to any file they want, and if they don't like what they see (DRM) can remotely disable your machine. By upgrading to WMP 9, you have signed away your soul to the devil. This is what ActiveX is only good for.
If you have any portion of ActiveX enabled - YES! There are so many ActiveX exploits that it is almost impossible to have a usable IE that is safe. If you totally turn off ActiveX, you constantly get nagged about how its turned off and that the page may not render properly. I finally switched from IE to Firebird when I had to clean up over 30 machines infected with a variety of spyware. The forensics analysis showed that the spyware came from e-mail (Outlook), various web sites and from holes in M$ JVM. Apparently, there are now exploits that take advantage of the security holes that are in Microsoft's Java runtime. It was a mandatory install in XP SP1, can't be unistalled, and M$ is no longer providing security fixes for it. The only way to resolve this security exploit is to install someone else's JVM (I installed Sun's).
As long as you are running M$ software, you are vulnerable. No amount of press releases stating that Microsoft now "gets" security is going to change that.
It would be better for Firefox adoption to spend developer resources on making it a much better browser by providing innovative features (liked tabbed browsing) rather than trying to mimic M$ nonstandard extensions. The Internet works only because of standards like those from W3C. If M$ wants to improve the standards, there is a well documented process that anyone can follow. Instead, they put their thumb in everyones eyes, and proceed to make the Internet proprietary for their own selfish gains. M$ does this, so that they can slow down the advancement of Linux. If we wanted a proprietary network then we all be using MSN. If M$ wants its browser to continue be the most used, then it should follow those standards and innovate within that framework. Yet, IE even to this day, does not properly handle CSS V2.0 or even png files. ActiveX is the single most deadlyist insecure technology in IE, yet it is almost impossible to lock down without being constantly annoyed by message boxes. This, after all of M$'s public announcements that they are serious about security. Actions speak louder than words.
The way to win against M$ is to make a product that is superior in every way. As for dealing with web sites that conform to only M$ proprietary extensions, the best way is to complain to the webmasters and to management of those sites, and to teach them that there is a better way.
I have been using Firefox/firebird exclusively for some time. I have actually seen this happen. I analyzed what was going on, and it turned out that the site I had visted was trying to run a mallicious Java applet, that took advantage of security holes in the M$ Java runtime. I had upgraded to a Sun JVM long ago, so the applet would not run appropriately (keeping me safe). Unfortunetly, the applet wouldn't quit when it couldn't corrupt my system. Instead, it would request for more memory. After about 10 minutes, the memory requirements for Firefox/Java process had grown to over 200MB making my system slow, crashing the browser. I would rather have this kind of behavior, than having the applet successfully run, corrupting my machine.
from India. They see the backlash and are trying to preempt any action by confusing the debate. The reality is 2 million high paying, highly skilled jobs have gone to countries that don't respect human rights, treat people like cattle, women are treated like property and are killed by their husbands if they don't have enough of a dowry. Is this the world that we all want to live in? Yes, America has its problems, and is not blemish free. But compared to all other countries in the world, its paradise.
Companies that outsource to India are anti-American and are a cancer to the US. Its time to put theses guys out of business by boycotting companies that outsource our jobs overseas. Also, we need to vote out of office the bastards that supported NAFTA. Here's a short list of companies we should start boycotting: (add your own if you feel a company is deserving of this treatment)
Walmart (these guys have done the most to destroy America)
AT&T
Electrolux
American Express
GE
Also, pressure should be applied to the government and to the SEC to force companies to disclose how much outsourcing they are doing in their public filings. Companies should realize that outsourcing is not pain free.
Bush is totally responsible because there have been attempts by senators to address some of these impacts and he has torpedoed any attempt to address this problem. He even went so far to say that those who have lost their jobs should move on up the food chain. He has had no solution other than to continue to allow his corporate donors to export our jobs to India and China. I ask what is further up the food chain from Information Technologies? I have spent over $40K and 10 years getting my education. I am former Electrical Enginner who went into computers after my EE job was exported to India. I don't have $80K (that's what a good education costs after all of Bush's tax cuts) and another 8 years to get another education. I need to put food on the table now, not in 8 years from now. Let's face it, the loss of 3 million jobs has occcurred on Bush's watch. Any other CEO who had that kind of track record would have been fired long ago.
Come November, I am voting for ABB (anyone but Bush). He is such an incompetent president that he makes Clinton look like a Nobel prize winner. At least when Clinton was President, he was screwing the girls and not me.
is to vote this miserable failure out of office. This guy has done absolutely nothing for the average guy, instead his policies have benefited the big corporations. Another 4 more years of his disastrous policies, and there won't be any tech industry left in the US. People with higher educational degrees will be driving taxi cabs.
Because of the miserable failure of the current administration, any kind of high tech job is destined to be shipped overseas. Switch to health-care or genetics. These industries seem to be hiring local. The EE & CS industries are being slowly killed by this administration. They are rewarding their base, and the only thing their base is interested in is in lowering their costs. Currently, their biggest expense is labor, and so, have targeted all cost-cutting efforts towards labor. This administration has gutted all labor protections. They are even reclassing overtime. This administration believes in only 2 classes for America - the rich who rule the poor. This president has caused the largest transition of the middle class towards the poverty line since the crash of 1929. This is the first generation that will not be better off than the previous one. Don't underestimate the effect of this transition will have on the American people for generations to come.
Even if a new president is chosen in the 2004 elections, it will take at least another 2-3 years to reverse this trend.
Turn on the auditing feature and set it for access failure. Log in to the locked down account and try to run the game. Go into event viewer and look at what resource was denied (use Run As). Then set the priveledges to this resource appropriately. Repeat untill all of the required resources are set and the game runs
I unfortunately had a need to test some software I was developing for a client on various XP testbeds. I needed to test for various conditions requiring many reinstalls of XP. I didn't want to be tripping over the activation extortion scheme, so I went out and bought a large second drive. I split this drive into 2 partitions. On the first one I installed Linux. On the second, I installed Windows XP. This partition is disposable and where all of the games would go. I also installed XP on the first drive. Configure the machine to boot off the second drive. I used GRUB and configured the menu options to hide the 1st drive when booting into XP on the second drive. This prevents children from mucking up anything on the first copy of XP. Configure GRUB to show all drives when booting off of XP on the 1st drive. Boot into XP on 1st drive. Run Backup of XP on second drive to a file on the 1st partion. Since no files are open, you get a complete backup. When second XP fails, boot into 1st, delete all files on the second partion and the restore from backup.
If you can't get the machine to boot off the second drive (some poor quality bioses wont allow you to), you will need to reconfigure your drives so that the Linux runs on the first drive.
They talk about how programming will be outsourced and then these programmers will magically become trained in the medical sciences in order to build these wonderful devices for an aging population. This is pure fiction. The programmers who lose their jobs, will find others at McDonalds not at some R&D shop developing medical devices. How are they supposed to pay for this new training when they can barely afford to eat?
Let's face it folks. The current administration has been a miserable failure They have traded away America's future prosperity, in order to give big businesses more profit so that they can be re-elected. This is more of the same like the biggest tax-cut that they have given to the wealthiest 5% of Americans, at the expense of everyone else.
These guys talk about moving up the food-chain in order to keep jobs in the US, but do you really believe that even project management will not be outsourced? Within 5-10 years, there will not be any kind of high-tech companies based in the US. That's where this is leading to.
Plenty. At least 4 Libyan MiGs were sent to the botton of the ocean. The MiGs took an attack posture and in each case were outflown and outgunned by American fighters.
They quickly forget. Look at EasyPass. They sold this boondogle as a way for you to quickly pass through toll booths. You forgot: Insurance!!!! - Don't even start without getting this!
No. You can be personally sued. But there are ways to protect yourself. You can get an insurance policy to cover some of this risk.
Business Policy (liability) - covers accidents and the like
Errors and Ommissions - covers if you screw up a client's system.
