  2. PSP Go messed it all up on Sony Continues To Lose Ground In Mobile Gaming · · Score: 2, Insightful

Nobody I know with a PSP has upgraded to the PSP Go. It just doesn't make sense.

You can't play a game, complete it then trade it in for another game. The games shops lose and the customer loses too.

Before launch it was said that you would be able to swap a PSP UMD for a digital version for the PSP Go. This didn't happen, so it made migration expensive if you had an existing UMD collection.

Another problem is downloads, your PSP Go has to sit there while you download the game, which could be hours.

As Bill Gates once put it, they create software that adds new features. They don't think about big fixes, people don't buy software for big fixes.

So it's the same at 3rd party software companies. They add new features so people buy their software, fixing the software security model isn't something many end users would care about unless you explained what benefits that would provide.

It would be nice if Microsoft hadn't been overcharging education establishments for their software for years. Perhaps then they would have had more money to spend on other things.

All that money Gates and Microsoft have is down to them emptying everyone's pockets for mundane software like Office, adding the Microsoft "tax" to every PC sale and so on. Gates's charity is all about recognition. The best charity is that where the donors are anonymous, that way they have no agenda, they aren't trying to change the way people think about them.

I'm sure if we all had more money than we could possibly spend we would give it away.

    Plenty of criticism here:

I keep hearing this "useless" argument. It's a tablet device, it's no desktop replacement.

Have you noticed that time and time again that tablets running a full blown desktop OS have failed to sell? Even Bill Gate's estimates for tablet PC sales were completely wrong and sold a tiny fraction of what was estimated.

An iPad can do word processing, it can play games, it can go on the Internet, it can play music, it can play films, there are utility applications, there are music production applications, there are drawing and photo editing applications.

Useless? what use are you say it lacks?

Sure, if your criteria is a DOS prompt, Bash shell, File manager and so on then yes it is useless. It is stripped down and not the full desktop experience, but who says that File managers are fun or that messing around with config files, registry settings or writing scripts is enjoyable?

There is a lot of needless complexity in computing devices. We are moving on from big dusty boxes filled with cooling fans to small more portable devices. Desktop machines are 10% of the market, laptops are popular and tablets will replace laptops in many mobile computing applications.

Media people not having as much money and musicians having to tour more is hardly the same level of devastation. They would all be bankrupt and there would be no music otherwise.

The worst that can happen is the smaller bands have to work as well as be professional musicians.

Battery life, it has to be much longer than a laptop.

Software support, if the screen resolution is greater than any other device then some software may not work or will appear small.

Price, if it's not much cheaper than the iPad then that's a failure.

The actual OS is important, but given it's Android it's unlikely to present a problem.

It really needs to do more than just look at the front of your face.

Two cameras would be better, 3D image. Although even that could be fooled with a 3D model of someone's face. If gaining access to a famous person's bank account you could steal a waxwork dummy head and use that, okay a bit far fetched but if the stakes were high?

Let's not forget the scene in Demolition Man where Simon Phoenix needs a retina scan to get out of the jail, so he uses an eye of a prison guard stuck on the end of a pencil.
