That's the phrase to describe Microsoft. They patent the obvious, the things that have existed for decades purely to get one up on their rivals and to be able to say Linux stole their idea.
Also having a good idea doesn't mean you can make it a product.
It's Ballmer who sounds off about the competition. Ballmer is probably a very good executive and businessman, but he's not visionary and he also doesn't hold back when giving his opinion. His opinion is very tabloid like.
Bill seems to be careful to base his opinions on fact and not overstate things.
But the thing that hurts the most is that the new version comes out before your 18 month contract expires meaning you have to have two contracts or just miss out on the improved version.
This is why I don't bother with contracts, your contract phone is tarnished and practically worthless by the time you are at the end of the contract.
I think it goes like this "Oh, I can't explain how life began. I think God must have done it".
Biggest cop-out excuse ever.
Evolution is proven as far as I'm concerned, we see how micro-organisms become resistant to anti-biotics. This can't be god stepping in and changing them just so someone's ageing relative dies.
If god is in control of everything then why is it the most religious countries get hit with major earthquakes, flooding and tsunamis?
Yahoo are great at this sort of thing, annoying the hell out of net users. It's why I stopped using their services.
Adverts sure don't work for me. If there's something I want I will check for reviews and opinion, a brand and flashy adverts don't persuade me to part with my cash.
Until Microsoft only has 50% of the desktop market there will always be a case for restricting their power.
The server market is different, the backends can be swapped easily and so long as people can still get their data and print out they won't notice a thing.
The OS wars are all about the interface people sit down and use, what we need is choice. If anything rather than just mess around with Windows and ask Microsoft to remove components, the governments should be forcing them to release Office, SQL Server and Visual Studio for Linux, OS X (it has office, but it usually lags behind Windows) and all the Unixes.
Microsoft has never released Access for any platform than Windows, for small offices it's a handy tool. They can claim it's due to lack of ODBC or Jet for other platforms, but that's not a good enough excuse.
Given how much money it costs to keep Google's kit running, it's in their interests to look for cheaper energy. It's an investment they hope will increase future profitability.
Has Bill Gates or Steve Jobs made any similar pledges?
But this is what is wrong with patents, the chances of two people having the same idea aren't that slim.
Patents were invented to protect break through designs which took a lot of time and money from being copied. Two people having the same idea isn't copying.
The Television was developed by three different people, if Baird had patented it we may have been using mechanical TV for decades.
Prince literally gives away his latest album with a newspaper in the UK, completely devaluing his music and brand, but when people copy his music he gets p*ssed off?
Maybe he's realised that if he doesn't have tons of money that he won't be able to attract sexy models anymore?
Once something has changed that's it. You will need to lock up a lot of people to change the situation.
It's the same with alcohol and drugs, once they've taken hold it takes a very determined leader to try and exstinguish such things. It was tried in the US in the early 1900s and failed.
Gene is old school, he simply doesn't understand the way people think these days. I would love to see him survive on the money available to an average college student.

OSX has lots of open source commands and daemons. It will be subject to more patches.
The fact there are more security holes being patches can also indicate there's more pro-active review.

Cowon's players support it. They also do FLAC.
It's not for the third world countries, it's for the countries that have food and water but can't afford technology.
I can see their plan, prevent OLPC sales in Nigeria. Then produce a clone of it to sell there, the OS is open source so will be available.
I personally would say "sod you all" and not sell it in Nigeria. I'm sure the political pressure on the company suing would soon lead them to cave in.

It would be like having 20 year finance on a car.
You wouldn't leave a builder in your house alone, so why leave all your personal files stored on a computer with a tech guy?
Anything sensitive should be encrypted, password protected or simply not on the computer.

But can you legally install Mac OSX on a Dell? nope.
If you want Mac OSX, you buy a Mac, if you want to run the awful OS that is Windows you buy a Dell.

There's no evidence this disassembly was being done for any other reason than to prove ownership/licence of the code used.
If the disassembly was being done to learn how it works then modify it so it bypasses copy protection etc then it would be a problem.

Why sue a company that is trying to do some good in the world?
Screw patents, patent holders should be forced to prove that the alleged infringer has seen their product and then copied it.
Sure, the number of deaths are low. But it's the long term effects such as birth defects.
Also 200,000 mothers decided to abort as they were concerned about the effects on their children:

Also, food was contaminated, so it was hard to get clean food. That only made the problem worse.
If there's source code that needs to be released then great, let them do it.
However I don't understand this business about not being easily able to install another OS?
I've wiped it a few times and installed Ubuntu.
It has no CD/DVD drive, obviously that means you need a USB CD/DVD drive.
And your point is?
That in itself just proves how Microsoft are failing, you can't compete with the competition unless you sell to all the markets they do.
Stop consuming palm oil.
Eat less meat (they cut down the forest to grow soya to feed animals).
Don't buy wooden goods.
They're cutting it down to make money supplying the western world with things. Don't buy the product.
This is why they don't sue anyone at Harvard, they know in the long run that would create lawyers who dislike them.
Some websites track IP addresses so they check for abuse. How is this different? an IMEI is much more secure.

If there's $2 million at stake and you're doing real time programming then use a proper programming language and OS.
C/C++/ASM on a real time OS.
Yes it's hard work, but get your algorithms and design right and you should be able to implement it in anything.
