    Often bad drivers and/or hardware failures.

    We get most BSOD's at work from bad hard disks. Once the pagefile gets a bit messed up the BSOD often appears.

    It just shows the power and arrogance of Microsoft when they start suing groups of politicians and law makers.

    The EU is acting on behalf of the EU people to stop the monopolistic practises of Microsoft.

    Nobody is forcing anyone to develop for consoles. If you don't like the platform then don't develop for it.

    I guess many are tempted to consoles due to the slightly less common piracy.

    Commercial programmers are interested in code reuse and being able to develop fast. The games programmers years ago would hae shrugged at having APIs available, poking the chips gives you absolute control and lets you get the most out of the hardware.

    Could this in theory mean someone creating PPC machines that could be used to boot PPC MacOSX?

    I know the machine would need some boot code, but there's sure to be someone who could write some.

    No flight is necessary. Desirable yes, people like to travel, but they don't need to.

    I liked how the article put a slight negative spin on Concorde and this latest Japanese plane. Many Americans wish they were producing such a plane and are quite bitter than the UK and France have beat them to it in many areas of aviation (first with supersonic passenger jet, first to produce a horizontal take off fighter).

    The important thing is will this plane generate much more damaging pollution? we shouldn't waste fuel resources and pollute the planet just because we're impatient to get somewhere.

    I'm more inclined to believe that Microsoft wants to use this as publicity. If OSDL decline Microsoft will says "see, they know their software is inferior". If they accept then Microsoft can spend a lot of money and get OSDL to pay their half (which would probably bankrupt them).

    There's a lot of Solaris code that won't be released due to licences or patents.

    I think the best scenario is one where applications can be run on both OSes. While Linus and others won't want to borrow Solaris code, they could do a lot worse than have a look at it and make the two platforms closer in terms of compatibility.

    If you don't know what is on your network, the chances are someone else handles your network admin. Therefore you should look at how much it costs to employ or pay for that persons services. Generally Windows servers need more attention.

    Decades on and there's still people who love the unix shells. The invention of the GUI and mouse made it easier to communication with a computer for some tasks (graphics for sure). But sometimes when you want to perform repetitive tasks you just have to use the appropriate language.

    Just like SQL is still the most powerful way to manipulate database data.

    If it's Windows Mobile you'll be lucky if it beeps at all, they're really unreliable when it comes to waking up from standby.

    If there's anything you take away from this Q&A session it's the feeling there are are multiple personalities at force in Microsoft.

    On the one hand you have the side that likes patents and licensing of everything. The side that likes to screw people and rake in the cash. Then you have the more co-operative side. An example is how their technical guys fixed a bug in GAIM. GAIM infringes the MSN licensing (Microsoft require all clients that use their network to be licensed). Which just shows how jumbled up they are.

    I'm sure it would be a dull day and interaction would be less simple if these Microsoft employees (who run Linux all day) didn't have an MSN client to use.

    Yep, it's the lowest common denominator approach.

    In the UK our quoted braking distances for various speeds are still based on a Ford Anglia, a car with drum brakes. It's obviously a worst case scenario approach.

    A modern car with full disc brakes and ABS would perform much better.

    New formats will suffer the same problem as CD. CD is deemed good enough and the lack of a standard copy protection for CD means consumers can copy and compress the audio for use in their different devices.

    Once CSS was broken it put DVD in a similar position to CD. DVD owners are able to compress DVDs for their mobile devices and also backup their discs.

    Any DVD follow up will fail to win over the tech savvy. Once someone has purchased media they expect to be able to do what they like with it. We realise we don't own the copyright. But that's just like a print of a famous painting, we can alter it, photocopy it and so on, but we don't own the image. So why can we only watch a DVD on a DVD player?

    They add something powerful to their OS but the implementation is poor and creates security problems.

    The problem is that they design things to be easy and painless to use. Thing is security and restrictions annoy users, so these get left out.

    Bill Gates was a good coder, as were many of the early Microsoft coders. Look at analysis of Altair BASIC and see how they used all kinds of optimisation tricks to get as much as possible into the limited RAM of the Altair.

    This is why Microsoft became a bit of an expert on BASIC. Of course as soon as they expanded the software declined in quality and the cheese factor increased.

    The only reason I would support a delayed launch is if they used the extra time to improve the hardware, but then they can't now since the console spec is frozen.

    I can't see the problem in releasing a console without games. They could allow for mail order until games appear. That way you don't have retailers complaining of poor sales sue to lack of titles.

    I'd argue installing apps on Linux is easier than Windows.

    You look for the program you want to run in the package list (many commercial or mature distros have a GUI tool for this). You look for something you want, tick it, press install and it does all the work.

    With Windows you browse the web (there's not much good quality freeware), work out how to download it, run the installer. If there's any dependancies the software author forgot to mention then it won't run.

    They believe the GPL is invalid and they can do what they like.

    I'm pretty sure their new kernel will be using drivers created by looking at the Linux kernel source code.

    The original posting overstates the abilities of Xandros.

    Crossover office is a product you can buy and install on most Linux distros. It's a nicely patched up and packaged version of Wine.

    As for being able to access Windows filesystems, the Linux kernel contains drivers for FAT, FAT32 and NTFS. I would be very suprised if this distro can write to NTFS safely as this is something that is still being worked on.

    Computers just aren't cool full stop. I don't care very much for Apple trying to make them so.

    They're just appliances like TVs, DVD players etc.

    If you want to be cool, buy a dull computer and spend the money you save on some nice clothes.

    They don't?

    Then why do they sue people making pre-annoucements about their products, sue people who leak versions of their OS (these are customers of theirs since they have purchased an Apple computer).

    They're just as bad as Microsoft, if they really "cared" they would have used AMD, since their processors are much better.

    Seems like the only computing platform that give you freedom is open source. Apple are changing their OS to suit their music resale market and restricting how customers can use their OS. It's not just Microsoft you need to worry about.

    Well anyone critical of stem cell research should be refused any treatment that exists as a result of research.

    I'm sure Bush would invent some reason why he should be allowed treatment if he were to lose the use of his legs. Doing gods work or something similar.
