  1. Re:Traffic analysis on Tearing Down China's Great Firewall · · Score: 1

Very good point about the easy detection. Of course, man-in-the-middle does not work with public key cryptography. The idea is based upon modular mathmatics, and laws of exponents. Basically one computer knows the number "a", and sends a number derived from "a" across the network. "a" itself cannot be determined from this number. The other computer generates a number "b" and sends a number derived from "b" across the network, and again, only the second computer will ever know "b". A computer needs to know either "a" and the number derived from "b", or vice versa to get the private key. A man in the middle knows only a number derived from "a" and a number derived form "b", but neither "b" nor "c", so a man in the middle cannot crack the encryption.

Not the best solution, but for my dev machine at work, I don't need 3d accel, so I just stuck in three low end graphics card's, one monitor each. That way, I can run them all at any resolutions, so I can have 1024x768 to test things at what the user would experience, 2048x1536 for coding, and 1600x1200 for other tasks. Just using three cards can be a relatively inexpensive solution.

  4. Antistropic Magnetic Fields on Was Thomas Edison Right about DC Power? · · Score: 0

Although Alternating current has provided easier long range transfer of power, it does seem to be causing problems with machines. A recent study conducted by Maxtor (sorry, I lost the link, probably on google), found that AC power generates weak antistropic fields. Although this is normally not a problem, as the power supply converts the flow to DC, a poorly shielded power supply can leak the antistropic magnetic field, sometimes corrupting data on the harddrive. Although not usually a problem, this can be dangerous around production machines, so either switch to dc, or check your power supplies carefully. Usually, it is not a problem of a poorly built power supply, but simply one who's shielding fails over time.

I must agree. I've always had a major fear of needles, and thus even a simple shot has always hurt for me, yet once I cut my finger open (somewhat deeply) after I thought it would be clever to hit a sheet of plexiglass with a sledgehammer (which exploded and cut me open), and this barely hurt at all, simply because it was unexpected, however stupidily.

The faster and farther we get away from oil the better IMHO. I think the bonus should be the extra MPG, and the environmental impact should be the reason. We can spare a few $$$ for environmentally friendlier vehicles. I guess the real problem is, if the government does not intervene, companies will only do what will profit them, and if it does, we end up with violations of rights.
