  1. Maybe... on AOL Mail To Be Accessible Via IMAP · · Score: 3, Insightful

AOL is usually pretty realiable for dial up.
They've dropped the requirement of the browser. Maybe if they drop:
-The fee thats atleast $10 more than everyone else
    -The buggy browser by default
-The advertisements (haven't used it for a while, does it still advertise when you sign on?)
More people will find it appealing, and the people who already use it will be happier

I wouldn't consider Gigablast a major contender, yet.... It looks nice, minimalist like google. The ads (Gigabits) are in a seperated section. Also, Gigablast appears to be handling the Slash blast just fine. If it can survive ./, thats a good sign. I haven't had much time to test out its search capabilities, and yes, it doesn't have that many pages indexed compared to google, but it has a chance. I could see it picking up.

This is perfect. Linux does have other problems, I must admit. But, hardware was a huge one. For example, the first time I installed debian, it took me forever to figure out how to get X how to use anything but VGA. Once I figured out my way around linux, it became easy, but it still took my a while to figure out how to install my graphic's card driver and such. Having default hardware, where they know what drivers to use, etc. will take a lot of scare and hastle away from the user. For example, if Debian new that every user used an NVidia GeForce, they'd probably bundle the GeForce driver as default. Standard hardware will solve many headaches. All the power to them!

Yes, it helps the firewall a lot. It also forces the user to choose or not choose auto-update (Great idea), and, it modifies IE. IE lets you know when something tries to install itself, and you need to right click and go through some steps. Its not just a simple yes/no dialog that the user always clicks yes on without reading. Helps keep people from getting spyware IMO.

Spyware is a big problem which isn't Window's fault. Because windows is the biggest, it gets targetted by spyware. You can still right a program which uses 100% CPU Usage and makes everything really slow, etc. for another OS, no matter how secure. Unfortunetly, its targeted at windows. My friend thought that windows XP was horrible because it was running so slow. On a 2ghz, it would take 5 minutes to load IE. I showed him Ad-Aware from lavasoft. It detected 589 spyware objects, quite a few of them different. I found that a big problem with spyware, is not only the spying, yet the fact that it slows your system to a hault. If this works, and makes spyware go away, or atleast well known spyware label itself (such as gator), I will rejoice.

I never got a chance at looking at the source, but I'm guessing its just a java loop generating pop up windows. This usually will freeze Win 9x computers, so don't click it.

  18. Re:My Knoppix Problems on Knoppix Tips and Tricks · · Score: 1

I think the solution to your problem(s) would be semi obvios. First off, if your booting from the cd-rom, the only way you could possibly save to your desktop is if Knoppix created a ramdisk as a temp HD(you just said it doesn't use partitions). Thus, powering down your computer would kill that. Next, booting of a cd-rom is never fast. Lets compare the speed: CD-Rom Drive : 52x Max (above might have been using a slow model) Hard Drive : Usually around 7200x although, some 5400x are around today. Plus, the harddisk has a lot more per plader. 52x a small cd-rom track, or 7200x a huge hd track. That would make up for the boot time. Install linux to your HD... It will boot quite a bit faster. Plus, certain CD-R's don't operate at full 52x. Install to HD. No missing files (no viruses or crashes either), and a boot time similar to XP (a little longer but restarting less then 1/year it doesn't really matter). To be truthfull, I wouldn't find it practical to run of a cd-rom boot. I installed Mandrake to harddrive. Disk Drake created partitions for me without frying my NTFS Partition(thats right, non destructive resizing built into the install). Then, it booted and hasn't crashed yet. I've installed linux and never looked back. Trust me, Windows works pretty good, but once you get the right Linux setup, there is no comparison.

After seeing what a slashdotting does, and figuring how many people visit slashdot and don't even click the link, those are some heavy load servers. They are also mainly having problems because of redundancy. At least thats what they appear to have said. They don't need just one high power server, they need 3 or 4. I have to admit, those are some great deals. I'm not sure if eBay is the best place to get servers though. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Actually, depending on your Distro, those Linux problems can be solved. Mandrake, had a reputation for being unstable, I know. Try it though. 9.2 is increadibly stable. I have no problems with it except for a long boot up time. This isn't a problem because I don't need to reboot. Lets see how many big problems are solved... The Mandrake Installer is 100% Graphical. It is also much better looking than Windows. It starts off, loads everything, and comes up with prettier gradients than Mac OS(I don't care about this but some people do). It then allows you to repartition your drive with DiskDrake, pretty, graphical, easy. Resize NTFS Partitions without killing your data, etc. Than, choose packages, from 1000nd's of software packages if you have all 3 CD's. Click install, and watch as everything installs in less than half hour, less than the time it takes windows to install less. Now, reboot and you have a graphical boot loader (lilo), already preconfigured with all operating systems that were already installed plus linux. Boot up, it boots into X instantly. Want to configure something? Use Mandrake Control Center. It looks like Windows Control Panel, except it is more organized and has more options. I haven't needed to edit a config file yet. You can also disable all the bells and whistles and use it like any other Distro. It also includes RPM and URPMI. This includes a graphical RPM installer. Than, there's RPM Drake for additional packages from Mandrake, Mandrake Update, and various other utilities. The only problem left is really dependencies. Unless you figure out URPMI, you can still have trouble with dependencies. The high majority are included, but I've had trouble with Glade#2. Most holes are gone.
