I now have multi-homed bandwidth. Dialup users. Network users from various locations. Inter-connections betwee the offices. Handle all my own forward and reverse (classless) DNS, web, and email traffic. UPS' to generators ranging from T1's to 10Mbit uplink wireless.
I have more users than some ISP's I know. I just happen to also EMPLOY them and they use computers supplied by me getting data from servers I own.
I can't sue? PUHLEEZ...
Which "ISP" should I call for my spam then to sue on my behalf? Apple? Earthlink? MCI? and a couple of dozen multi-homed "ISP"'s feeding me. Heck, I even back feed many a employee @ home through some wireless connections on a tower erected on one of the properties.
Can I sue yet? Oh -- I need to call SBC or Verizon I guess.
Isn't public networking fun. Fuck 'em, my rules just changed too. Spam me once and that/24 subnet is gone. Even have some/8 blocked (210. 211. ring a bell?). MY time frame? _Forever_. I unblock (whitelist) IP's upon a PHONE CALL... and trust me -- the callers get a copy of the SPAM to pass along to their ISP.
+11,000 subnets blocked. ~150 new daily recently. THOUSANDS just blocked. Three phone calls in YEARS so far. Problem ISP's will just go away as their "good" users will leave if they don't clean up their act.
Security has been linked so much to DRM these days [in the Windows world] because that is their only "out".
For them to continue with the Windows code into the future AND allow their users to run existing software (some, part, or all of it) the ONLY option for them is to wrap it ALL up in this DRM bubble.
Windows itself is so technically flawed (IMHO:) that its spaghetti code and operations can not be properly secured. Short of a complete re-work from the ground up will "Windows" be salvaged. Much like Apple did in dropping OS 9 and moving onto the Unix world (finally:).
What's Microsoft really thinking? In all honesty I believe they ARE probably doing a complete re-work on Windows as I type this (or not re-using huge chunks of the code) -- mixed with this DRM thing and throw into the mix VirtualPC for those "legacy" programs and they may stay top dog.
Whatever. I love my Mac now and you'll have to take Linux from my cold dead hands before I give that up too.
But it sounds like shit for some odd reason. Go figure.
Taking a.M4P file and "Save As" in Quicktime, then importing the.MOV into iTunes and THEN converting it to MP3 works -- but there is a very noticable gain/distortion introduced.
Slow but sure would be Audio HiJack. Untested by me yet.
Taking the file into SOUND STUDIO (import using Quicktime) and saving as AIFF works. Import.AIFF file into iTunes and convert to MP3. I personally think that setting the MP3 encoder to 128K/VBR gives the same quality -- and same file size... Otherwise 160K/MP3 will work too.
I personally already have tons of M4P files which will be archived to DVD/RW with the MP3's staying online...
The spammers will continue to either highjack foreign servers (foreign to them at least:), steal end users bandwidth, so on and so forth -- and label it all "Personal".
I'm right back to trying to figure out what is and is not really personal flagged as personal. Nothing will change.
LAWS won't fix the problem -- how do I reach out and touch somebody in China that spammed me from the US? It's just easier to block them all.
I've gone from trying to play nice to playing with various RBL schemes to my heavy handed approach. 1 IP with spam blocks the entire/24 subnet. Forever. Only are single IP's unblocked as needed with the associated PHONE CALL to me.
I'm seeing about 300 rejects today with 100 newly added subnets going in daily now. 3 IP's singled out for "OK" status that were blocked. This to a new honeypot domain doing nothing but harvesting spam since April 1st, 2003....it's just my own RBL for the rest of the domains...
Don't limit the Internet? I think ALL ISP's should block outbound traffic on port 25 coming from their dialups EXCEPT to their SMTP server.
UNLESS you are a dedicated customer with a rented fixed IP -- those are left to the customer to maintain. I have purposely _always_ gone for a static IP knowing this is how it will ultimately be.
Now, if the ISP won't allow said traffic on a static IP then yes, it's time to find another provider. The ability for spammers to quickly/easily change providers and get another fixed IP will slow them down seriously.
All the hacked Windoze boxen around the world could then be used to just send outbound email, say 5 at a time every 20 minutes to the SMTP relay in the registry and probably not set off any bells, alarms, or whistles...and with 100,000 hacked boxes the spam WILL keep coming...
I personally think making it harder to move around and freely send email is option 1, with option 2 coming into place being the bounties, and my option 3 of pick a spammer a month and, well, take him out (it's fun sometimes:) -- they'll get the hint that MY bandwidth and MY server and MY client(s) is not their billboard.
If you happen to meet a spammer in passing I'd also appreciate it if you beat the shit out of them for no particular reason. I have.:)
...probably for various people, well, it varies...

There aren't too many flavors of Windows that cause major problems for business' and home users alike?
Let's -- forgetting Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 we now have in the wilds and widely used: Windows 95, Windows 95B, Windows 95C, Windows 98, Windows 98se, Windows 98Bse, Windows NT 4.5x, Windows NT 5.x, Windows Me (how many builds?), Windows 2000 Home Edition, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional. The sad thing is that I know I missed many releases.
And yes, even for Windows I too can get 10 different programs (free) that do A-B-C in functionality -- but none of them do it 100%. Heck, this is true for very expensive programs like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Money, Microsoft Project, etc...
"What's more important, diversity or quality?" you asked. Obviously diversity will lead to qualityy as we've tried it the other way for the last decade+ and where IS the quality with Windows so far???
From the article: Google, the No. 1 Web-search provider, has become so pervasive that it is not uncommon for people to refer to searching the Internet as "googling".
Microsoft *seriously* thinking Windows could simply even host what Google does is going to be hilarious to watch.
Dollar for dollar -- sure, Microsoft could pretty much eat them for a lunch snack, but when it comes to PERFORMING Windows just isn't even close to being up to the task. That's after looking at Windows 2000 AND 2003 Server variations which is pretty much everything they have to offer.
I also just happen to not have Windows servers myself for a good reason -- and just happen to have many Linux boxen running various shops (along with OS X, BSD, and Netware of course:).
And to really do this right you have to absolutely kill performance which is easy to do through a simple upgrade of the OS. That way you have truly have the full eXPerience.
It's out? Thanks. Quick Google search. Got it. Love it.
Should I notify Apple that when you leave the tabs on all the time and "Open in tabs" a docked bookmark that the first tab always looks "active" (though the windowing for the tabs works fine)?
It's too bad Apple is taking this stance. They should understand, realize, and if they were smart: CAPITALIZE on that fact that there _is_ a reason why us lowly end users are clamoring for the latest builds of Safari.
It works. Like most Apple software it works very well -- even at the beta level. Yes, this is too bad...
Yes, they can. Unfortunately (or otherwise for myself) I believe that I happen to know of something like 8 or 9 exploits giving you 100% access to any Windows box (not behind NAT or firewall'd). Windows based firewall software running on the same box, is, well, useless. ZoneAlarm? You'll never hear a thing...
I started the migration for the company from Windows starting in 01/01/01 for at the time were 30+ reasons -- many of which are being found and patched.
What scares me is I'm a schmuck and don't like/use Windows and I keep finding them. How many are there for real? Sorry Microsoft, but I have a business to run, and the job you've been doing creating the software to run my computers has stunk. UNIX to the left, UNIX to the right...
On topic, and I hate replying to my own posts (how rude!). The broadband install _was_ a wireless 5Ghz connection which is easily giving me 4Mbs (http://www.dls.net/).
Cable in this area (heavily populated now) is not available.
I had DSL with Ameritech, er SBC, um, SBC/Yahoo! which was originally 768K. Either it was down, had poor latency, or would just drop 80% of the packets on a WEEKLY basis and last for hours to days on end. I put up with this for YEARS now and finally cut them... after they cut my connection to 384K _and_ raised the bill by $5. Their answer as to why was to ask me if anybody else in the neighborhood got DSL. Do I look like the phone company? And WHAT does that have to do with my connection back to the switch? NOTHING.
Thankfully I do have ISDN (Internet backup/voice usage) as well -- which causes problems with SBC and trying to get DLS with ANYBODY. I have no POTS line, don't want one, and wouldn't use it -- but I can NOT get a unbundled DSL circuit anymore (my original one WAS).
Of course I went wireless... and frankly it SMOKES the T1 at the office...
Off topic, but you are correct. Never really liking Windows I've been the one playing with/using Linux, BSD, BeOS in the basement at home...:)
With OS X the move the Mac's has been painless. The family loves theirs and those at work are always ready too.
I've never had the need, want or desire to play with PPPoE until a recent broadband install forced me to. The router they supplied required Windows to setup/install which VirtualPC took care of -- and showed me I didn't want their router after all.
I have gotten Linux to do the job nicely, but only after some tweaking, playing, and configuration changes. Initially to confirm the connection was good and working plugging it into the PowerBook just worked with no added software, drivers, etc. The somewhat non-techie installation guy who _only_ barely understood Windows was amazed at the ease.
Yes you would be doing students a disservice. I love the idea of a Microsoft free college -- thankfully when I went they were only at DOS 3.0... and the CS students weren't interested that -- it was the Unix's floating around.
