  1. Re:Why screenshots? on New Releases for Debian and SUSE · · Score: 1

Absolutely! Screen shots for the latest distribution are a complete waste of time. "Yeah! Open Office in KDE!" woohoo. Maybe a few screenshots of custom tools would be ok.

I don't think it would be too hard for a distro to, for example, include gdesklets by default and throw in some fancy application launcher or something of the sort. At least it wouldn't be just a plain KDE or Gnome desktop again.

IIRC, it's more than just a "Canadian content" thing. In Canada there are laws restricting the manner in which corporations can advertise to children. (i.e. no using some super-duper character to sell cereal). Not such a bad idea considering children are so easily influenced.

Being on the largest undefended border makes controlling all those dang signals (tv/radio) a little difficult.

A friend and I just 'finished' an UnrealEd project recently. www.netscene.org/BC3D/

This was our first experience with level 'design'. We were simply modelling a section of our school; it was a challenge to keep things acurate. We barely scratched the surface of UnrealEd and it was a humbling experience. UnrealEd has it's fair share of bugs, hopefully most will be gone in UT2K4. I have a newfound respect for level designers. The tools have come a long way since I played with level design in Duke Nuke'm 3D.

  8. Peer Editing Features on Student Fights University Over Plagiarism-Detector · · Score: 1

As a student, my experience with turnitin has been positive. I'm happy when people who didn't do their own work get nailed. Furthermore, in one class, the prof used the peer editing feature of turnitin. We all got to rate each others work which meant we learned more as we saw how other students wrote their papers.

Tools like this are always reactive; so there's a damn good reason to have it. Frankly it protects the value of my degree. As an employer I would value a school's students more if I knew they didn't cheat to pass. BTW, All of our code goes through a plagarism detector as well (Moss?)

I don't feel as if I'm being presumed guilty and proven innocent (which is what this student claims is his reason); I feel it's a protection for those who don't cheat.

    ...reasonable concept of freedom

Ha, therein lies the rub, what is a reasonable concept of freedom???

Freedom is in the eye of the beholder; an abstract concept used all too frequently to accomplish someone's agenda...

Corporations (and many individuals) usually want freedom to make as much money as possible - at who's expense? Whenever someone talks about freedom, ask, "For whom?"

Freedom for one person/group/company/mob usually takes away some 'freedom' of another person/group/company/mob. The freedom for you to punch me in the face takes away my freedom to NOT be punched in the face.

We don't try to hide the fact that sites like this is exist in order to gain more revenue from CNR. If we wanted to do that, we'd simply make it impossible to use APT, and we don't - Apt is fully functional in LindowsOS and for those more technically inclined, they are more than welcome to use it instead of CNR if it meets their needs.

    Summary: Supply and Demand

The supply of decent, marketable artists is sky high...thus the reward given to artists is lowered. How many people just in Slashdot can play guitar? Straight forward economic equillibrium. The reason people download all of these songs is because they (subconciously) recognize that musical talent is around every block - it's just that there's finally a way to circumvent the extraordinary prices set by record labels.
