A veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and the Technological Revolution, Common Sense survived cultural and educational trends including feminism, body piercing, whole language and "new math."
But his health declined when he became infected with the "If-it-only-helps-one-person-it's-worth-it" virus. In recent decades his waning strength proved no match for the ravages of overbearing federal regulation.
He watched in pain as good people became ruled by self-seeking lawyers and enlightened auditors. His health rapidly deteriorated when schools endlessly implemented zero tolerance policies, reports of six-year-old boys charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, a teen suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student. It declined even further when schools had to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but cannot inform the parent when the female student is pregnant or wants an abortion.
Finally, Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses, criminals received better treatment than victims, and federal judges stuck their noses in everything from Boy Scouts to professional sports.
As the end neared, Common Sense drifted in and out of logic but was kept informed of developments, regarding questionable regulations for asbestos, low flow toilets, "smart" guns, the nurturing of Prohibition Laws and mandatory air bags.
Finally when told that the homeowners association restricted exterior furniture only to that which enhanced property values, he breathed his last.
Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by three stepbrothers: Rights, Tolerance and Whiner.
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
here's a listing of all with last name of LaHara in New York state that I could find. I'm sure if you have a phonebook and a good knowledge of the area you can narrow it down more as to where that little girl lives...
Talking about trains always reminds me of my uncle Earl. Back in the day Earl took his test to become a train conductor since he loved trains so much.
It got to the oral part of the test and the proctor asked Earl "You have a northbound train running at 38 MPH and a southbound train on the same track running at 42 MPH. The trains are 6 miles from each other. Who do you call first to report this to?
Earl perked right up "I'll call my nephew imag0, of course!"
The proctor was puzzled and asked "Why would would call your nephew?"
Looks like viruses like this may help speed adoption on alternate operating systems (like linux, OSX, et. al) on the desktop quicker than a dozen ESR's with geek infantry in tow.
Spoke with both sides of the family this evening, going on about how messed up their computers were acting and all they had to go through to get it patched up. I listened and informed them how well my iBook and the relative merits of UN*X and they listened...
About the only way that I think I would happily toss down a monthly $fee for online content would be to have the content shipped to me on a (monthly, quarterly, whatever) basis on cd as well as the access.
HTML is small, dynamic content can be shoe-horned into static, and you can always look back on the good old days (think LWN on cd. or Wikipedia, relive your first p0st over and over again on Slashdot the 99-01 collection, whatever).
I think I would even pay a premium for such as service as well (20 bucks a year for online access, or, 40 and we ship you a quarterly cd as well!)
Myself, I see the net being a little too ephemeral to be chucking down cash for something you will never get to touch or keep a library of for your own use.

Oh, and watch it if you're carrying an iBook. I guess since it looks different they will want to open it up and play with it while people with 'normal' laptops just walk on without a second glance.

After spending two years in MA phone support for NT on laptops I would have to say I am happy the damn thing is finally dead. Installing NT on anything was time intensive, installing drivers had to go in a particular order or it turned that hardware into a doorstop:

A long running joke in laptop support was that NT meant "Not Today". And it was true. Repair installs didn't. Service Control Manager (SCM) was only there to throw cryptic, useless errors at users just long enough to generate support calls and let's not get into how hard Adobe Acrobat and SP4 clusterfucked in some Trident configurations.
Glad it's dead. No love lost here. Burn your cd's and feel happy its gone the way of win 3.11 and MS Bob.
I was thinking a while back how cool it would be for a bootable Apache on cd... Boot the target box up, loads and runs Apache.
You can change the/htdocs to an nfs mount elsewhere on the network or have it on a local drive (in case for dynamic sites, like using a Wiki, that need to write stuff to disk), configuration changes can be saved and loaded from a floppy as well.
Would make a nice secure apache install and easy to setup as well.

Just installed the latest Slack on an extra drive the other day and was suprised that the venerable and much appreciated 'setup' was missing.
I've used Slack off and on since the 0.96-pre-1 days and it was the first time since then that I noticed it was gone from the system.
Here's hoping for a new, revamped (still curses!) 'setup' app in the near future.
