    I am not sure if this would work or not but as the phones are bluetooth compatible and you can get bluetooth keyboards it should be possible to use them. Has anyone out there tried this yet??
    personaly I find predictive text fine, occasionaly you have to add a word to the dictionary but it fairly fast.

    There is a lot about M$ treating their temps like s**t in the book No Logo.
    Seems it is a very two tear system. They will do things like hire somone on contract for 23 months, get rid of them for a month then rehire them. so that they are not counted as permenant temps.
    You know what they are like with EULAs so can you imagine what their work contracts are like.
    Unfortunaly the IT work market seems to be becoming more heavily bassed on temps. The pay may be better (but not for long) but conditions as security are much worse.

    I remember reading something in NewScientist last year which is simalar to this
    I think it was HP, or some company like that. Were looking into spacial messaging. Ie your phone can look up messages/pages based uppon your location.
    At the time I thought it was really interesting and had a lot of applications. In theory you could get user reviews of the place you are going to eat, just before you go it. Find out if the shop you are in has better online prices than they do in store. Loads of stuff.
    This is another thing on my 'meant to look into but have forgotten all of the important details' list.

    Umm, do you think that we are all 'necessary to comply with the supoena', this could get them in trouble?

    UK law is supposed to be changing so that ISPs / telcos will have to keep SIX MONTHS of records. Do they have any idea how much data that is. But it does get round the problem/solution of people deleting server logs.

    Norwegian prosecutors, acting largely on a complaint from the powerful American entertainment industry,
    Anyway I think that other posts in this tread mention double jepody, as this is a criminal case and the state lost I don't think the state can appeal. Good.

    I think you can swap movies on Kazza, I don't fileshare. Due to bandwith (or lack of)more than ethics.
    I was speeking more of a hypothetical thing that scared the Movie industry in america right about the time that the RIAA was saying that napster would cause the end of civilsation as we know it (like that would be a bad thing).

    an appeal will almost certainly be made
    I am not so sure. It depends on how rabid the MPAA lawyers are.
    This case is proving nothing anymore, there are tonnes of other programs out there that do the same thing. It is not good PR either
    Unfortunaly this is a big loss of face for the MPAA lawyers, they really wanted their pound of flesh and they didn't get it. So if they can convince their bosses that they have a case it may go to appeal
    This case came about becuase the movie industry was terrified that a 'movie napster' could decimate their industry. They were trying to clamp down on everything they thought was a threat.

    you read theregister regularly you will find that they always do this sort of thing. After freeserve was bought by the French government they were always calling it 'le freeserve'. There are loads of other examples but none that come to mind right now.

    Even if they do get fined it will only be for pocket money in M$ terms.
    Seeing how soon the SPV came out after sendo switched to symbian I would think that there was some dodgy dealing going on. I mean not spending a couple of dollars to help M$ against it's biggest competitor (nokia), when they are happy to loose billions on the Xbox. Just dosn't sound right.
    It would be nice if the US government could introduce a 'three strikes and you're out policy' for anticompetitive behaviour. Not that this would happen with the current administration.

    Why is it necessary to check email, send email, surf the web, etc from a cell phone? Because, if you have a life, you will not allways be sitting in front of a PC. I have a nokia 7650 and recon it was the best gadget I bought last year
    Being able to check train times cinima times, news, email etc on the move is very handy.
    Sending pictures is neat too, but it is going to take a while to get used to. It can be usefull too I did use it to prove that my train was late when I wan't in work on time.
    I think the next Killer App for mobiles could be integration with Internet IM servaces. but could hit mobile providers if it cuts into SMS revinue.

    There is a link from the article to this page. Which has loads of interpretations of DeCSS. Including a Haiku and a screen dump.
    How can the capitalist pigs think that this is not free speech or that DeCSS is still a trade secret
    Personally as soon as I heard that DeCSS was banned I downloaded a copy just to prove to myself the futility of internet censorship.
    better delete it now before the law gets hold of me and confiscated my PC for having sensitive materials

    WiFi is aslo a great idea for Student halls. For years Unis have been complaining that it cost too much to but an ethernet connection in every room, this can do it for a fraction of the cost.
    I can't imagine that using Laptops in class is such a great idea though. The idea is that you try and comprehend the point the lecturer is getting accross.
    Of course a good lecturer should post the URL to lecture notes at the end of the class. Saves the planet and meens that you can't loose them.

    M$, innovation through acquisition.

    I am not sure what effect this will have on the web. Coldfusion is a direct competitor to ASP. I would think this would raise issues with the monopolies watchers.

    The biggest selling point of flash (well if you listen to Macromedia) is its cross browser/cross platform capability. M$ would surly cut down on this. Which would make flash less attractive.

    I thought that Macromedia were trying to push flash on PDAs and Smartphones, this would probably restrict it to M$ powered PDAs/Smartphones.

    So this could lead to a upsurge in flash as IE would become integrated with it. Which would make the web unusable for non M$ browsers, or it could diminish the use of flash as it becomes a M$ only technology.

    What really gets me is that the governments (UK and US are equally bad with regards to this) think that because your online activity can be tracked it should be. They seem to think that 'digital rights' count for less than ordinary ones. Can you imagine the uproar if the government made everyone wear a GPS/mobile thing. That recorded every conversation you had and everywhere you went. That would be unacceptable to jo public so why should this be treated with any lesser contempt.
    The regulation of investigtory powers act (RIP act) in the uk is trying to achieve the same thing. But no one has worked out who is going to pay for it yet. I can imagine an 'online security' tax being added to my ISP bill. So I pay to be spied on. Great.
    How long do you think it will be before you have to show ID before you log on at an internet café
    In fact in today's news there is an article about the phone companies being flooded with request for information on mobile calls and locations. Half a million in a year. Over 1% of phone users in the UK would have been checked up.
    This will not stop terrorism, it will just mean that the terrorists will have to find some other way to communicate, or a more sneaky way of doing it online.

    Hopefully with a few more cases like this people may think twice before starting to spam. You don't make that much money from spamming and $7 million is a fairly hefty fine.
    But if they sent about a billion emails it is still a fine of 0.7 cents per spam. Does someone know what the average profit is per spam?

    If we are going in this vein then I would have to suggest Angkor wat, in Cambodia. It has been described as one of the most amazing structures concieved by the human mind. For something more moddern you could try the petronas towers in Malaysia. Tallest buildings in the world, even if they only let you go up to the bridge. Or a bit closer to home (if you are in the US or Canida)is the CN tower and Gloden Gate bridge A bit closer to home if you are in the UK I would say Eden and the Faulkirk Weel, not to mention the london eye. All are great enginearing feets in their own right. I am sure you will get more replys that you can see in a lifetime so I will leave it there.

    By the way, you hit the nail on the head of the anti-OSS argument here. There is really nobody accountable for these bugs, legally or otherwise. You're relying on the kindness of strangers, and if they aren't willing/don't have the time to fix it themselves, you're going to have to pay to have somebody else do it.

    Relying on the kindness of strangers does not seem like the best idea. BUT quite a lot of OSS developers consider products to be 'their babys' and take some pride in them.

    Some companys support is good and you get good value for money. Others are usesless. It would be nice to see a comparison of the life cycle of an open/closed source bug.

    I had a discussion about this with a friend not so long ago.

    For 10 years or longer there were people going into computers because that is what they loved. They had their BBc micro or whatever (please don't get into a 'my first pc was' thread) and learnt to hack on it. Their skills changed as they got older but they had coding ingraned in their brains. It is like somone who learns piano from the age of five, they will be able to play on a level that somone who starts learning at the age of 20 never will.

    the last fiew years people have had Megadrives/PSX is whatever. That you can't code on.

    People still learned to code cause there were loadsa jobs but they don't live and breath computers

    Now the jobs and the money are thining out so there may be a migration away from this, I don't know

    I think the garage mechanic analogy is good. Some people do it cause its a job some people do it cause they love cars (or even engines).

    OT (or possibly on topic after the ramble above). Started new job today, turned up in suit and was confronted with the MD saying 'what are you whereing that for it is casual dress here'. I am a happy man

    Where is a good place to find out who funded various Congressmen? With a system like there is in the states it would be nice to find out the 'reasons' that Congresmen support certan ideas.

    Sounds like it plays video DVD's to me...

    It can act as a DVD rom so if you have it connected to your PC and you can play DVDs on it. This does not make it a video DVD player. It dosn't help that the zdnet artical is confusing/wrong.

    What it definatly dosn't do that the ./ arictical said it could do is
    ..then hooked up to your TV, and play your favorite DVD's
    prehaps someone should update the artical.


    BTW and OT the first comment on the Sony page when I viewd it was
    "You ogg users really crack me up. You intentionally rip all of your CDs into an incompatible format, then bitch that it's incompatible!!!"

  23. M$ XUL? on Creating Applications with Mozilla · · Score: 1

    Hmm. As XUL is an open standard is their anything to stop MS emeding it in one of their browsers. It still wouldn't work as well as Moz XUL but it could stop people from switching. Say I developed a XUL app for a company and said it will work on any Platform (well most) all you have to do is install mozilla. This could make XUL the killer app for mozilla if enough developers get into it. M$ realising that it has a new threat to its monopoly releases an MS XUL or XUL# or something. Whcih workes with IE or windows. This will stop people having to migrate and create inconsistancys . Eventualy everything will be written so that it works in MSXUL. and we will all be back to square one. It would take even M$ a while to intagrate XUL into their browser quite as well as it was done with Mozilla (took its time but worth it now). But they have the resources to do it.

    This is a small misunderstanding. Many people seem to think that a black hole has super gravity or extra strength power just because its a black hole. Actually, it all depends on the mass.
    Very true. As the mass increses the density decreses. For a black hole the size of the universe we would need about as much mass as there is in the universe. So we could all be living in side some huge black hole. We won't get squished but we can never get enough energy to escape.

    Well he is back up and running now and he is Legit-i-Mutt

    I think that Sony didn't like the fact that the whole aibo code was online, competitors could then steal it ect. The lawyers have to justify their jobs as well.

    The fact that he is back online now does show that Sony are not entirely unreasnable. They actualy use modded Aibos themselves. They have one which can be trained with a clicker

    I think some companies are starting to wake up to the fact that modding can be a good idea. It can prolong the life of a product. It can also come up with novel uses, which can then be re enjeneared and put into the next version, for profit

    There is a flip side. Copywrite issues do piss companys off but more importantly if Mr Smith buys a product and it gets modded with some buggy software. Mr Smith may think that it is the product that is buggy. How may PSXs' died cause the mod chip burned out? This was not Sonys fault but if people didn't realise it was the chip rather than the legit parts it may make them more reluctant to buy another sony product

    Actualy thinking about it I don't know why I am sticking up for them cause the lazer on my ps2 has died recently and I never modded it.
