  1. The only thing that can fix it... on Deus Ex Creator On How a Video-Game Academy Could Fix the Industry · · Score: 1

The only thing that can "fix" the industry is another complete collapse, followed by a rebirth consisting of small players (NO mega-corps). The video game industry, foolishly wanting to be like Hollywood, has gotten it's wish: it's become a faceless corporate giant with no soul, fixated purely on focus groups, numbers, and endless rehashes of tired junk. All style with little to no substance. Just die already.

Another side of it is the incompatibility of art and money. As much as it pains me to call video games 'art', I acknowledge that the developers practice a form of art; the developers being those who code, the sound recordists and the people who generate the graphical assets, etc. The vast majority of traditional artwork (as a visual medium), just like music, is mostly obscure and will never turn a profit. The problem is not the medium, but with those who do not understand art as human expression and those same people who must attach a price tag to everything.

The "failure" is not the medium, it is the endless greed inherent in large corporations who 'care' nothing of the craftsmen that enable them to profit.

Real art (whatever that is) cannot be made on an assembly line...

Modern mainstream games (360 and PS3 I'm specifically referring to) just suck. Endless rehashes with overblown budgets, 10 million polys per frame that look pretty great, but the games themselves pretty much just bore me to tears. 0 substance. Not to even mention the $60 price-tag for these overrated, over-hyped, disappointing excuses for a game. I'm not even using my 360 or PS3 these days, they just sit there. I'm no longer willing to give MS, Sony or the big publishers one more cent, or even a minute of my time. They just disgust me. AAA to me means "stay far away", it's rehashed vanilla crap for the masses. Actually, modern mainstream games remind me of Hollywood (that's not a compliment, BTW).
    /RANT

Anyways, I like the idea of a console released by a small company that anyone can write games for, and I plan on supporting them with a purchase. I think it's a huge plus that there's no Call of Boredom or Gears of Boredom type games on this platform.

Wait a few days until actual retail buyers get the units in their hands. Right now on Amazon for example, the majority of the reviewers are kickstarter people, and half of those are whiners who are surprised they didn't get the thing delivered on a silver platter w/a complementary BJ. The sense of entitlement that some of these kickstarters display is pretty sickening. It got to the point reading the Amazon reviews where, when I saw the word "kickstarter", I immediately skipped to the next review.

If I've learned one thing, that is the fact that you don't buy rev. 1 of *any* tech related product. I've got better things to do w/my time than pay to alpha test hardware/firmware/software.

Congrats on the release OUYA! I wish you the best of luck.

And here's a novel idea: if you're hiring a programmer (for instance), how about, I don't know, asking them to write a "Hello, World! " program. From what I've read, that right there will thin out a good half to three-quarters of the candidates. You could even have one of your minions do this part.

Do you actually think you can rise to any level of power in either of those parties if you have a shred of decency? Fuck no, you will be marginalized or just kicked to the gutter.

Speaking of ignorance, you do understand that LTO 3/4/5/6, released in 2005/2007/2010/2012 respectively, transfer data faster than hard drives, right? It's just the initial seek time that is slow. Once a given block is located on an LTO and the data starts to flow, the biggest challenge is feeding them fast enough to achieve their optimal hardware compression ratio, which tends to be just shy of 2:1 given a standard mix of business data.

Handled and stored properly, they are *very* reliable, and as an archival medium, I'd trust LTO over a spinning disk any day. Again, used an archival medium, they are rated at 15-30 years in terms of longevity.

If we're all so lacking in any kind of moral compass or care for anyone other than ourselves that absent of a strong central government, we're all going to revert to savages trying to kill each other to obtain their possessions?

No. It's to protect your family and your possessions (food, water, working automobiles w/fuel, etc). When (not if) the economy crashes, all social services will break down. These things (among others) cease to exist/function: police forces, grocery stores (food supplies), water supplies, electricity... "law & order" will cease to exist and from then on out it is survival of the fittest. Is it starting to make sense now?

They may as well shoot me... I don't want to hang around anymore in that world.

Oh, don't worry, "they" will. If you are in or around any urban area, you'll last 2-4 weeks at most with that pacifist attitude.

I read an excellent story on some guy's blog describing the chaos that ensued when the economy crashed in Argentina (I believe it was Argentina, I may be wrong, but it was a South American country). The story went down pretty much how I described it above, which is why I posted that comment. The only things that saved this guy and his family was the fact that he was armed, and they got the hell out of the city. He didn't actually have to kill anyone in self defense, but there were several occasions where people tried to relieve him of his property, and by having a rifle in plain view, he was able to keep what was his and run the rats off.

Scary stuff, straight out of Mad Max...

Implementations typically run in timescales of years and millions of dollars, with teams of developers, DBAs, etc. The software suite is a canned solution that you then slightly (or vastly) modify to tailor to your business needs. ( My job as a systems & storage administrator at a major US-based snack food company has me managing the ~30 Linux servers that run our Oracle databases on the DB tier and Oracle EBusiness suite at the application tier, backed by all manner of storage arrays, NAS devices, FC SANs, load balancers, etc, etc. Fun stuff! )

Hyperbole in a headline? No, I just can't beleive it.

Ellison does not own this Hawaiian island. It is a portion of a state, as in one of the states that comprise the United States. He holds title (or more likely, a bank does) for a significant portion of the lots on this island. He does not "own the island".

Even if he aquired the title to every square mm of land on that island, he still would not own it. That just allows you to build on and occupy the land at the governments pleasure. And remember, even if you have a title to a plot of land, whatever is below the surface certainly does not belong to you. And because of the construct of Eminent Domain, you only have the right to occupy/use a portion of real estate as long as the government has no use for it.

Unless you are the federal government, you cannot truly own a shred of real estate in the real sense of the word "own". It's never fully yours to do with as you see fit.
