    The part about this story that gets to me is that the researcher didn't alert Microsoft before posting to a public mailing list. Sure, a lot of people don't like Microsoft, but that's no reason to make it worse for the millions of people who are forced to use Microsoft products, especially for security holes which have yet to be exploited.

    The article does nothing to suggest Microsoft bashing: no motives are given for why the announcement was made to a public mailing list and not to Microsoft.

    One might reasonably assume that Microsoft bashing is a possibility; one the other hand, there might be no malice involved. We don't know, and I wouldn't want to guess.

    Why is it that religion really brings out the nutcases.

    Because religion is about belief; and being a nutcase is about deranged belief.

    This is not to say that all religious belief is deranged; far from it. But nutcase belief often has something in common with religion. If I hear voices in my head, is it because of my deranged brain chemistry? Or because God is speaking to me? (Answer: God only knows.)

    Aqua-man has become quite the hard-ass. He cut off his own hand and grafted on a harpoon instead. He no longer takes shit from anyone. He now acts like what he is, the king of 73% of the Earth's surface.

    Yikes! Okay, I take back what I said about him -- this guy is the bad-ass of the deep.

    Gets me thinking ... 73% of the earth's surface isn't quite correct, because the ocean is measured in terms of volume, not surface ... in terms of volume, Aquaman owns an even bigger piece of liquid real estate.

    I collect miscellaneous links on my web site. Over time, I've started adding excerpts along with links. The excerpts help remind me what the link was about, but they also serve another purpose: when the link goes bad, I can use keywords in the excerpt to search for related pages on the web.

    Our knowledge of ancient history has proceeded in a similar manner. Much of what we know about, say, pre-socratic philosophers, we know because of references in Aristotle and other later scholars. The original sources may be totally lost, but at least we have some names and quotations.

    I had heard before that Charlie Kaufman, of "Adaptation" and "Being John Malkovich", was working on it.

    Both those movies have Phildickian tones ... absurb worlds, replicated identities, time-shifts between reality and imagination, the struggle of the little guy to both make a living and survive as an artist in the world of big business.

    I'm guessing Charlie Kaufman would turn in a stunning intepretation of Scanner Darkly.
