MS took the BSD TCP/IP stack and utilities, made a few changes, and locked them up.
This has been debated before, but I'll put in my $.02-- If MS didn't "take" the BSD TCP/IP stack we would be in a world of locked up and proprietary communication protocols-- the internet itself may be a different place.
Apple did the same thing with BSD Unix, which is the foundation of OS X.
Apple did not "lock up" the changes they made to the BSD Unix core "darwin"-- in fact not only have they been very open about their changes the entire core is available under and open source license. Apple has done more than expected-- and continues to port back all or most changes to Darwin. It's actually a neat operating system, and can be run w/o Quartz (Apple's WM).
Do yourself a favor and bite down hard the next time you put your foot in your mouth.
Doesn't apple's motion fill this niche? It allows you to add text and graphics to real time video IIRC- it's not free, but it's great obviously apple friendly software.
Verizon has no obligation to sell a cell phone with fully enabled bluetooth. They are a member of our free market economy and the products they sell should be up to their digression. Now, whether or not you buy that phone is YOUR choice.
Penggy has been allowing linux users to dial connect to AOL for quite some time. Who wants to put a bet on where most of the code came from. All in all- this is old news.
The same thing that was debated years ago when penggy was announced on/. will most likely be argued here:
Why would linux users want to connect to AOL?
Although, marketing this software through linspire makes a lot more sense considering their more simplistic market.
Until there is a 0% fail misclassification rate such a method is useless. Filtering was one thing, if you misfiltered a message you always had the oppertunity of occasionally scanning your SPAM box and making sure everything was about penis enlargement and not about the meeting you have next week. However, with this method email is stopped and never delivered, thus your misclassified email is now gone- forever.
I'd rather get 5 extra spam if it meant I also recieved every real email.
So who's going to replace your finger print and your retinas when someone figures out how to replicate that? Try replacing your fingerprints- I dare you.
My powerbook cost around $2000 (admittedly after student discounts). The slick bugger tends to perform quite well with anything I've thrown at it. I can't wait to play DOOM 3 on it!
Finally! I have long awaited this release as YDL3 was becoming slightly dated. A lot of people ask, why Linux when I can already use my sleek powerbook to run X applications and hell even apt-get software from Fink's binary repository. The answer is the same to why someone would want to run Linux on an x86 machine. Why run linux when you could just use cgywin?
MacOS X does Just Work, but sometimes it doesn't work the way I want it too. Sometimes I want to be able to compile any package and KNOW that it is going to work. Sometimes I want a pure linux development environment, and I am willing to take in a few of the caveats (ie. improper pmud).
Othertimes I just feel mired by a sleek GUI when I know how quickly I can execute the same task with a full linux environment.
Linux on apple hardware is a great thing (don't dis it until you try it:D).
Now I finally have a reason to buy a copy of CrossOver office. iTunes is really a killer app, and using gtkpod to manage the songs on my desktop was almost insulting to the ipod itself.
How is this even remotely on-topic? Mods should realize that this user has been posting the same off -topic tripe all over slashdot. It is the responsibility of the mods to keep this kind of bantering and obvious trolling off of the comment boards.
The embarassing thing for the parent is that upon reading the carefully selected "deciets" you'll find that most are small nit-picking, and others are gross assumptions. This all seems incredibly hypocritical.
1. Microsoft ships there entire Office suite for MacOS X (this includes Outlook, although it has been changed slightly in a few ways... 1. it works a lot better 2. it's called entourage)
2. Mac's still ship with IE- I suggest using that to connect to your Outlook Web Access
3. If you still feel the need to manage your money with a program like quicken find a more open alternative- GNUCash works really well for most simple operations.
4. The next time a large worm or virus decides to rock the corprate (read: windows) world sit back and laugh as your colleagues scamper about.
Those AOL users you referenced most likely couldn't install Windows XP either. People need to remember that the Windows XP install is no cake walk (you even have to do partitioning).
Damn subtle tyranny of Excel always trying to put down my coupe 'de etat. The battle rages on today at the bootstrap loader, but I fear Excel will stage a terrorist attack and simply decide to not boot anything anymore.
Mac OS X still allows you to browse the entire tree spatially and has since the very early public beta days.
At the school I work with we have spatial turned on by default in order to help older teachers whom we've had to train them with the old finder for the last 12 years or so.
I have a similiar set up and the last version I have tried is.68 (the latest in debian sid) and according to rhythmbox the latest stable release. However, yes, I do still have horrid stability problems.
Does playstation-linux offer a real desktop solution, or is it simply a fun hobbiest toy?
And secondly do the graphics chips actually recieve full support while booted under linux, thus is PC gaming (ignoring the obvious ARCH difference) even possible?
All that aside I wouldnt mind burning $99 on such a kit- sounds like a lot of fun, but I want some peace of mind that after I'm bored hacking I can turn it into a media station or something of some practical use.
What rhythmbox really needs is a standard set of features (ID3 editting comes to mind) and stability. Rhythmbox has always been plagued with lock ups, freezes, and every other horrid use of the word. Ryhthmbox simply can not handle a large library of MP3s (10,000+). Most often rhythmbox simply will not even load that large a number of songs and simply die before it finishes.
Rhythmbox has a lot of promise, but they need to slow down for a second and fix the bugs which are preventing people to use what could be a really killer app.
Here's another from kubuntu with KDE 3.4 and default transparency options
Pretty, eh?
It's stable and it's wonderful:

poor filebox... you know some people have to submit work!
We're just bitter that we have to finally give over the goods-- otherwise-- do as normal-- and pay us no mind...
Just search ebay for a use G4 Cube... It's the NeXT cube all over again-- Jobs has a thing for them methinks.

Biometrics DO NOT WORK.

Wooohoo.
The embarassing thing for the parent is that upon reading the carefully selected "deciets" you'll find that most are small nit-picking, and others are gross assumptions. This all seems incredibly hypocritical.
You're obviously a troll, but hell I'll bite.

netster!
He seems to be at the top of all of my searches.

So... When is someone going to realize that this is just email... its just email- this is NOT something new...
Hell does the fact that they are providing 1GB of storage really make this all that different?
Wow I'm glad I have someplace to keep lots of email now my 120GB hard drive just wasn't doing it for me.
You missed the memo on playlists, right? Turns out that you can use them to create whole new methods of organizing your music... Neat, eh?
