"Frankly, I don't want Budweiser knowing when I choose to buy their beer versus another brands."

That was one of the most pathetic things i've read in slashdot in years and i do make the occasional -1 excursion.

Let's all pretend he didn't say that, as a "thank you" for his efforts in this website.

Well, you know, Stalin was really good at reaching out to, and coming to an understanding with, Soviet scientists whose work cast doubt on the inevitable glorious triumph of New Socialist Man over not only the imperialistic forces of bourgeoise capitalism, but also nature itself. And there was nothing touchy-feely about it.

You might want to consider the result of that policy on the prosperity of the countries of the former soviet union. And you might want to consider how little the regime eventually lasted (on an historical scale).

Before "civilization", nature would weed out genetic defects like that

And this is nature weeding out the weakest races. If a species has a tendancy to weaken itself it will be less "fit" in the battle for survival with the other species. Other species like viruses that thrive in 3rd world countries we don't really care about and endlessly combine to be deadlier. It's like a wound that we wont heal. Or we can lose to other species that can live without endlessly destroying their environment, which in the end, are the only ones that live.

Now you made me sound like those greenpiece weirdos...

I think there is a fundamental diference here. Copyrighted file sharing was illegal even before napster, and that status is not likelly to change in the forseable future. However the connection sharing is not illegal, it is only against the terms of service of some isp's. Competition could perheaps drive all isp's to at least tolerate the practice. How about having your ISP's name included in your ssid? That's a very reasonable compromise. What if the ISP wants an extra 10$ each month to allow you to share the connection? Well then the cost of access to the Why-Fi network is 10$ for you. Not bad, i think.
