  1. Re:Xp GUI on Tango Project to Make Open Source Beautiful? · · Score: 2, Insightful

you have never had to admin a bunch of Xp boxes on a shoe string budget before you have?

never had to run one close to the "low end" of minimum resource requirements ??

turning off all those un-used and un-needed services and themes makes a difference.

it will never make a slow machine fast, but for those of us that dont have the best of everything ,each of those 2 mb here 3 mb here services add up and it makes a difference.

now to try and get an alternate Shell running so i can trim the fat a bit more.

if people want a fancy GUI and have the CPU power for it , well good for them, for those of us that dont, its nice to be able to get rid of the crap and keep the functionality of the machine.

I use XP at home ( for games ) and at work , cause i have to.

But the first thing i do after a clean install is disable all that fancy dandy Perdy UI shit. Its a resource hog and gets in the way.

even tho i use linux for select things ( file serving, firewalls, routers etc ) the single best thing i like about Windows is the consistency of it. No i dont mean the crashing :P, i mean that everything is in the same spot on every version, all the time.

It saves me time when working on someone elses machine , not to have to go digging round looking for the option i need.

This is where i feel distros like Ubuntu will help on the desktop, givin that "Windows Feel" , without all the crap that comes along with it.

Is it there yet, no i dont think so, but its sure moving forward awful fast.

    Not Really ... :P

But seriously they could easy go up through the Bearing Straight ( spl ) then hook round over the top, and pick a gap between Greenland and the North American main land.

the shortest path by flying is a curve anyways and if you can do it all at high mach numbers the extra distance wouldnt be that much of a bother would it ? specially if you could still do it in half the time.

Sooo... flying from NY to say London and going over that "nice warm" North Atlantic Ocean is soooo much safer..

look at the odd's , crunch the numbers.

the USA has about 40K ppl die per year from car crashes, and about 25 - 30 K from assaultings ( shootings , stabbings etc )

    http://www.the-eggman.com/writings/death_stats.htm l

    ** snip **
In the US, each year there are about 40,000 deaths per year in automobile
accidents vs. about 200 in air transport. To put this in perspective, the
chance of dying in an automobile accident is about 1000 times more than
winning a typical state lottery in a year.

    http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/gen99/gen998 45.htm

Sooo yeah .. you have a greater chance of dying by "driving your car" to the airport, than you have of dying by the plane falling out of the air.

but even with that said, if you did go down in the North Atlantic, at least you wouldnt have to worry about the pain for more than about 3 or 4 mins.

Considering that NewYork and Tokyo are just about on opposite sides of the world, i would suggest that they do an "over the top shot" and go via the North Pole.

By going that route, so long as the plane could pass the required regulations for minimum safe distance from a landing zone ( sorry i cant remember what its called ) , they would be able to do just about the entire flight with out coming anywhere near land at all.

    Take off and landing aside.

still Emeralds and other jems are rarer than diamonds and should there for be worth more, but since De Beers controls the supply of diamonds and spends stupid amounts of money telling everyone how "rare diamonds really are" , prices will always be what they are.

( go google it if you dont believe me )

ever wonder why every 4 / 6 months you see jewelery adverts saying *OMGz , 50% off*

yeah .. they can afford to.

Still , if it keeps the little woman happy and people dont bother thinking about it, De Beers is always going to have demand far out strip the supply it is willing to give and make lots and LOTS of money.
