Advertising on the internet needs to be reevaluated. Currently, companies only get paid for a click-through, but this is not an accurate measurement of the value of the advertisement. When an ad is placed in a newspaper they get paid for the spot, not by the number of people who reply. Tv is the same way. Why should the internet be any different. IMHO internet advertising is under paid. But this will change as it becomes the dominant form of advertising.
Fuck the FCC. What gives them the right to decide that a word is improper? It's a fucking word. Get over it. If it's ok to convey the idea how can it possibly be wrong to convey it with a certain word?
The FCC shouldn't be in the business of setting moral standards.
This guy was the first big artist to record the soundtrack for a computer game (remember Quake 1?)
Devo recorded the soundtrack for the game Neuromancer, which came out on the Commodore 64 in 1988.
The vast majority of U.S. households have the ability to access broadband. They just choose otherwise. Most Americans aren't like the slashdot crowd and are happy with their dial-up. OF course, if they ever had fast access they'd never go back.
Toby the Economist asked, "Philosophically speaking, what right does one individual (the State) have to *force* another individual (me) never to choose the gender of my child?"
What right does the state (or individual) have to force someone to wear a seatbelt, to not use drugs, to give up a portion of their income so it can be spent on something they don't approve of? They don't need a right, its mob rule.

Yes I do read outside of the speculative fiction genre, but I find Science Fiction to be the most interesting. Mainstream fiction tends to focus on the individual dealing with change(yes, most stories
can be boiled down to that) while Science Fiction tends to deal with society as a whole dealing with change. The latter is more thought provoking and relevant in my opinion.
For another interesting take on the hive mind read "The Light of Other Days", co-written by Arthur C. Clark and Stephen Baxter. The hive mind concept is only a small part of the book, but the entire book is very readable and thought provoking.
Bray is probably right. Most of the mod chip owners are using it to play copied games. But is it all bad? When I was a kid on my Commodore 64 I pirated ever game I could get my hands on, because I had no money. Now I'm older with disposable income and still play games. I buy them. Give them a little crack when they're young and they'll keep using it when they get older.
Let us know what you think in five years, after you're making more money and your company decides your job can be done by a new college graduate that is will to work for less.
I remember reading about an experiment a couple of years ago. A group of people who had never played Tetris before were asked to do so, in a controlled environment, every day for a period of time. The people who had vivid dreams about the game showed a marked improvement where the others did not.
I believe that dreaming is a way of working through our problems and possibly indexing our memories.
DirecTv's HD is not over compressed. They put up a satellite that is dedicated to HD. It requires a third LNB, but the picture is so great even the skeptical will be amazed.
Anonymous Coward said, "At least this seems to be moving in the direction of actual thought control rather than biofeedback. You'll know when you have real mind reading when the training time falls to 0 and people can use the interface to draw sketches."
Real mind reading could come long before this ever happens. Everyone's brain is wired differently, so how would a computer know how to construe a person's thoughts without being able to think itself.
The moon has a much lower escape velocity than the earth. So when returning to earth with a heavy cargo gravity could do much of the work. Of course it would still be very expensive, but with valuable enough resources it could be cost effective.
I think you'd be pretty hard pressed to find someone who's contributed code to linux and doesn't have it installed on a desktop somewhere. It's still their code and they're still proud of it.
I was truly surprised when I first encountered something like open source. It was on a mud not linux, but people were spending many hours coding and got very little appreciation for it. They still coded away. Linux is much the same way exept the code is more important. Now, if you try and take that away from them, I promise your in for a fight. You can't take someone's baby away.

Guys, don't get me wrong, I love FPS and can sit there for hours, but its time for something new. What ever happened to creativity in games? Marble Madness. Tempest. Hell even Pacman was original. It's time for a new genre. I'd even be happier if the word genre was never used in terms of video games today. Make something new and interesting, I'll buy it. I'm sure there are plenty of others that feel the same way.
New Scientist, one of my favorite magazines will begin podcasting soon. http://www.newscientist.com/podcast/

Just my two cents.

When this is passed lets all refuse to take the retest while driving on a busy city street. Shut a city down for a couple days and see what happens.
