  1. Re:Linux routers on SCO Targets US Government, TiVo · · Score: 2, Funny

I'm guessing their going to step on Microsoft's toes. The evil of all evils has managed to keep intact for pretty long. The judicial system isn't even close. How bad could SCO be?

In the end, I believe Microsoft will attack SCO with its army of clone lawyers, which will give the emperor Gates total power over the law...

Wait a minute, the future has already been told!

No, but seriously though, SCo's probably just trying to get bought out by a big company, to ensure its future against linux

The pop-up ads that bother me the most are the ones that look like Windows dialog boxes. You know - "Warning, your computer is too slow, click here..."

It's not like I've ever fallen for one, nor do I think many other /.ers have (They don't look right on Gnome or KDE).

The problem is that some of the "normal" people on the internet can't tell the difference until its too late. My dad is barely computer literate to open and save an excel file (only excel!). He would fall for one of those immediately

My main concern is that some of these may be used to activate some scripts or something. Once again, those who fell for the boxes probably use Internet Explorer. Need I say more?

Back in the old days, Nintendo did something like this (not for any kind of censorship however).

After Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros 2 was released in Japan, with similar gameplay to SMB 1, only different levels (like a mod). The American Super Mario Bros. 2 was only a hacked version of some other Arabian game or something like that. That's why it's so different from SMB 1 & 3.

The American SMB 2 was released in Japan as Super Mario USA.

The Japananese SMB 2 was released in the US later, on the SNES Super Mario All-Stars cartridge as the Lost Levels.

A full length history course squeezed into 28 sessions (4 weeks), each 2 hours long, makes for a lot of note-taking.

Curiously, however, one week into the course, I still haven't decided whether I will take notes with print or cursive. Unconsiously (sp?), I seem to write headings and important things in print and then write everything else in cursive.

I don't zoom in at all, just try to hit them with primary fire, the first shot.

At first, it's pretty easy. This same easiness, however, makes them increase their skill crazily fast.

There's a period where I almost get scared at myself. I kill the bots almost immediately after I see them.

Unfortunately, once this period is over, everyone (including me) is dodging bullets so fast that it takes a while to actually hit someone, even at point blank.

I'm not saying the whole thing can't be done, I'm just saying that it got to be a hell of alot better than anything that exists today to prevent any kind of hacking (DeCSS anyone?).

  14. Computer Science Club on Starting an After-School Computer Club? · · Score: 1

Well, at my school, the a lot of the Computer Science students were close enough to being an actual club. We had a pair of Computer Science classes offered (by the Math department, not the stupid business department: now open excel...). Every year, the best programmers would compete in local programming contests (UIL, TCEA, etc) and do pretty well. In fact, I was the best programmer in my school disctrict (it's good sized), and our school was the best in the district. Getting awards really convinced the administration to provide additional funding. (We got a couple of free trips to Lubbock, TX, and Houston, TX (from El Paso, closer to NM), food included. Granted, we had a pretty awesome Computer Science teacher, he was closer to being one of us than a teacher. You know, Star Wars, nuclear physics, hacking, etc). Of course, towards the end of the year, the "CS club" consisted of about twenty people in a room playing StarCraft or Unreal Tournament (godlike!), including the teacher. Those were the times...

It is really great. I had been using Phoenix 0.5 for a week now, but I have now fallen in love with Opera. I'm still too poor to dish out $40 for a web browser, but I would if I could. The rendering is great. Pages load very fast. I haven't run into any pages that don't look right (I haven't been to that many sites either). I could also liked that I had a greater choice of page fonts, as opposed to Phoenix (configuration issues?) The eyecandy is fascinating. Smooth effects all over, from forms (buttons, scrollbars) to toolbars and page tabs. Plus, I've got my qt settings really sweet now with transparency, great anti-aliased fonts and such, so the menus also look great. One of the things that took me by surprise was the size, only 4 megs (3986283). This was linked with qt, but nonetheless, this is pretty small for a full fledged browser with e-mail client. I haven't set any custom mouse gestures or keyboard shortcuts, but I looked at the interface, and it was pretty simple to do. I think I'm staying with Opera for a while.
