  1. iBook on Notebooks Replace Textbooks in Texas · · Score: 1

I gotta tell you, in my house we have a powerbook and an older generatin iBook, and the pop out tray CD loader needed to go. It's not as nice and much flimsier. I'm glad they got rid of it. I used to have a Pioneer CD drive with a slot loaded drive my Windows desktop machine. it was great, I wish more drive manufacturers would make them.

  2. Re:Copying games is worse than rape on Operation FastLink Yields Three Arrests · · Score: 1

There is no copy protection on 99.99% of CD's. so this is not exactly true. Now, replace "CD" with "DVD" and you have a better point.

  4. Mini on iPod Mini Hits The 'Sweet Spot'? · · Score: 5, Insightful

The iPod Mini was almost universally laughed at on Slashdot, and we seem to have a bad record of predicting these things (the original iPod announcement comes to mind..."Lame"). Apple does research which they use to develop new products. All we have is our personal preferences and better-than-you attitudes.

  5. Re:why more ram anyway? on A DIMM Future for RAM Bundles · · Score: 2, Funny

Clippy is a 3D rendered multimedia powerhouse in Office 2003. He alone takes 300MB of ram. The rest of Office is exactly the same as it was in Office 97.

Yes I know you were being funny: That's not a refferal ID, but even if it was, who cares? it wouldn't cost you any more money to buy it, and he gets some cash for spreading the word around. I don't see the angst against them on Slashdot.

  9. Re:what speed on AOL Mail To Be Accessible Via IMAP · · Score: 2, Interesting

I know this was meant as a joke, but isn't this the first major IMAP implementation by a large consumer ISP? I don't think I can do IMAP through yahoo, or even my hosting company's email system. Does Apple's .mac do this?

  10. Re:I dont use apple earbuds with my ipod on Fourteen Digital Music Players Reviewed · · Score: 1

Wow, you're on of the few people I know who don't like the iPods earbuds. I do tons of audio work recording bands and such, and I use high end headphones, and I think the white earbuds are awesome. I thought I broke em once and I freaked, because they're a special order item unless you feel like springing for the iPod remote too.

  11. Re:Ogg Vorbis?Ogg Vorbis?Ogg Vorbis? on Fourteen Digital Music Players Reviewed · · Score: 5, Insightful

Unfortunately, you're not the target demographic. The target is a teenager / 20 - something with disposable income. MP3 is the standard and is what 99% of people care about. I believe the Rio Karma has Vorbis, get that one. If I hear a 17 year old girl ask about Vorbis support when she's looking at the pink iPod mini, then I'll be on board with you.

  12. geez on LinSpire LPhoto and LSongs: bring on the lawsuits! · · Score: 2, Interesting

These might be Apple iApps ripoffs, but looking at those screenshots, I don't think Apple has anything to worry about. Not only do those screenshots look pretty lame, do they have Rendezvous sharing, a music store, book creation on demand, export to movie, etc?

Show me your Garageband or iMovie clone and I'll start paying attention.

  13. I did it already. on National TV Turn Off Week · · Score: 3, Interesting

I did and started saving $80 dollars a month in cable bills too. Didn't miss it a bit, thanks to Netflix.

Then about 8 months ago I moved in with my girl and now we have a Tivo-like cable box, now I still watch very little TV but I watch what I want, when I want. Very liberating and very cool. By the way, HBO and Cinemax On-Demand kick ass, if you know what I mean.

I know I messed up by looking at pics but not reading the article. I actually have that same belkin cable, I use it to charge the iPod. But the built-in audio of that belkin thing sucks. It's not passive and goes through their crappy amplifier.

All that work and he still has cables to connect (he doesn't seem to think they're photogenic). I use this FM transmitter called the iTrip that snaps to the top of the iPod 10 gigger and I can hide the whole thing, zero wires. Amazingly (to me), the iTrip uses less battery power than the backlight on the iPod. Appetite For Destruction all night on repeat!

  20. Re:Apple experience? on Element Computer: ION Linux on Linux Hardware · · Score: 1

I like Linux a lot, but to say that apt-get is easier than Apple's way is why Linux will never catch up. After 2 years, I still can't get my wireless network running with any of the latest distributions. Can't do apt-get without internet. The powerbook recognized my airport instantly and with no hassles. Plus, let's talk about the applications themselves, not just the methods to install. Can I get an iMovie clone with apt-get? Garage Band? This is why people are buying macs now, not for the web browser.

Believe me, I hate the record industry MORE than you do, but movies make money at the theatre first, then go to DVD for more cashola. This isn't the case with music. You know, even indie music sells for 10 - 15 dollars, it's not just the RIAA that sets these prices.

The 2 killer apps are xCode for the C-ish stuff (obj-c, c++, etc) and Eclipse for java. xCode is still not great for java development.

P.S. If IBM built Websphere for OS X, I know many people who would open their fat wallets for it. Now that IBM makes the G5, I hope they see it's in their best interest. I'm currently using Websphere Application Developer under Red Hat 7.3, and we just spent three grand for a new Pentium 4 workstation (from IBM, interesting enough). I would have asked for a G5 instead!

I'll bite on the troll - You're not being denied any rights because you agreed to the terms of use when you bought the songs. If you don't like the terms, go buy the CD and rip it. Or try this new fandled thing called rendevous sharing in iTunes, and you can play all your songs over the network without even copying the files over. You can even do it over any Windows machines.

  25. Shoutcast on Real Problems · · Score: 1

Shoutcast is the way to go here. I believe it's what KCRW in Santa Monica uses. Mac and Windows users have dozens of choices that support it, notably iTunes and Winamp. Linux users have XMMS. I don't see the big dilemma here. I thought Shoutcast was free?
