No! Gnome is better, you insensitive clod!
Seriously, why not just work on making applications compatible between desktop environments? That would solve one major problem. And it's not too hard to go from one GUI to the next; it's not all that much different from going from "windows classic" to the new interface in Windows XP.
Use a P2P service for distribution! Take something like BitTorrent , possibly add some functionality so you can have multiple and/or queues downloads in one window, and just sell users the link to the torrent! If you're worried about people freeriding (though of course they'll be able to freeride later when the song gets on other networks, as it unfortunately will), then encrypt the files and sell the keys and a program to decrypt them!
OK, maybe that's not the greatest idea, but there's a lot of potential in P2P. Try to save yourself the bandwidth.
As for format, a lossless codec (with this P2P would be an obvious step for the huge files) and high quality bitrates in a variety of formats (OGG, MP3, AAC, &c.) would be nice.
Also, I love the idea of the CD labels and jewel case insert prints. I would certainly buy into that.
The primary difference is that I still get relatively nice packaging and sets at prices that are sane enough for me to afford.
The difference is that you're spending money on it at all. Buying bootleg anime supports an evil industry that probably does a great deal of damage to anime studios every year.
If it's packaging you care about you'll get better packaging by buying the real thing. Instead of buying five bootleg DVDs for $30, go buy one legit DVD for the same price and at the same time support the artists that make such wonderful work. If you must have the entire series (which is understandable), go download the rest of the episodes off of IRC/DC++ for free after buying several DVDs. That way you'll
a) get better quality stuff b) not give away money to an evil evil industry to which studios lose unknown but large amounts of money c)support studios that will then have more money to make better anime d) encourage US distributors to license more anime and bring more good stuff to the states.
Unlike the tornadoes of May 3rd, 1999, which killed 47 and injured more than 800, we now have much better tornado information and prediction technology.
That's pretty good--it's hard to beat tornadoes in the field of tornado information and prediction!
Great--I start wondering what all the hullabaloo over this CS thing is, and I finally get a copy of Half-Life for my birthday. Then the day after this they announce Half-Life 2?
Oh, well, I've had worse...like getting a copy of Daggerfall after Morrowind was released and trying to work my way through both games at once.:-)
Although it was wise for the submitter to check whether he was on solid legal grounds, it seems most uncivil of him to bring all this attention to the employee over such a relatively minor matter as this. Sasha seemed to be handling the problem with all expediency, and I imagine the issue would have been resolved had submitter merely waited and continued to correspond with him. Now tens of thousands of people know about this and Sasha risks getting in trouble with his superiors.
Submitting the site to slashdot was unjustified in light of how the problem was being handled, and it was a breach of trust on the part of the submitter.
And don't miss Taco's Revenge II, III, and IV...oh, wait, we just read those.:-)
But seriously, this isn't meant to be a serious news site...Taco knows he double posts a lot, and while he tries (meagerly) to avoid it, it's not a high priority of his and it doesn't mean more than a second or so lost out of your day. I thought this...erm, quintuple post was hilarious--it's nice to see that Taco realizes how much some people hate him for double posting now and then, and that he does not, in fact, consider this a 'serious' news site in spite of himself.
Slashdot's not CNN.com, and that's a good thing. I like the dupes--I wouldn't have it any other way.:-)
That was one of the rare things I run across on the internet that literally have me rolling on the floor laughing...Everyone in the library was staring at me.:) Ack...The librarian's coming in this direction...but it's the EVIL BIT! THE EVIL BIT!
DL speed is related to upload speed (if you, say, hacked the source to make your upload 0, your download speed would become pretty pathetic, too), but they won't be equal...If you're worried about not uploading as much as you downloaded, just leave bittorrent open for as long as possible after you finish the download.
Bittorrent's been out for over a year and has been in heavy use for a long time (it's commonly used by people downloading unlicensed, fansubbed anime, for example). It's likely that if there were any serious security exploits they would have been discovered by now, given that the source is open. It's also GPL'd, so if you're worried about security risks go check it out yourself.
Don't know why this was posted, but seems to be a good time to ask this...
In my experience Mozilla opens files of the form filename.extension.torrent (like rh9.iso.torrent) with bittorrent, but opens files of the form filename.torrent (like rh9.torrent) as text (even when set to open.torrent files with btdownloadprefetched). Anyone know why this is?
Mozilla opens the former with bittorrent out of the box, BTW--no MIME type setting needed.
Everyone's talking about the practical value or lack thereof of this discovery wrt crypto, but can't we just appreciate this for the beauty of its contribution to number theory? I'm no mathematician, but new disoveries in number theory rank higher on the interesting scale to me than the average/. article...How is this in any way 'boring'?
...Am I just sleep-baked, or did the article at first say that President Bush was going to make an address to the nation at 10:15 Eastern? I didn't see it on the news at 10:25, so I thought perhaps the address was already over...then the part about that was gone when I refreshed a few minutes ago. What was that about?

If that means ICANN's blood, then I entirely agree. ;)

It's a^n + b^n != c^n for non-zero interger values of x, y, and z where n>2, not a^n * b^n, silly.

Well, yes, it is true. People own expressions of ideas, not ideas. :-)
I can't wait to watch the 3D animation of the kernel source with this...the best part will be seeing the patch! :-)
