And let us not ignore that due to 'clever' bookkeeping, most movies don't post a proffit until AFTER the movie is released for rental and purchase.

Isn't a blank CDR just that? Or do you actually have to get one preformatted for Audio and another for Data these days?

  5. I WILL argue your points on Testing The Right To Resell Downloaded Music · · Score: 1

Most CDs have between 10 and 20 songs on them, and cost, surprise surprise, between 10 and 20 dollars.

Haven't used the service, have you? If the number of songs is greater than 10, the price stays a static $9.99 (with very minor exceptions; IE double discs).

Second, Apple gets 35% off the top of each sale. The rest goes to the RIAA, which it diffuses through its normal chain of profit sucking.

I couldn't find anything to support or refute this claim, so I could say the RIAA generously gives $1,000,000 for every $.99 sold on the iTMS and (while we both know THIS isn't true), it's got (as of now) the same supporting information as your FUD.

As for the last two points, well, there's your trade off for the $.99 versus $18.99 for a CD full of fluff. You don't like it? Don't use it.

50/50...that ain't bad. I guess what this says is that neither is really a replacement for the other, dunnit?

  9. Please try to pay attention on RIAA Tracking Songs by MD5 Hashes · · Score: 1

Great-grandparent: Just because I leave the front door open does not mean that anyone can enter and take what they want from my house. Same as my computer. The action of downloading is at question not making the article available.

Grandparent: To use your analogy, if you leave the front door of your house open (while you're away), you should expect that someone will come in, and if you're lucky, take something.

Parent: There are few people I know that lock up every door and window before they leave the house (I live in a small town). I've been to rural areas where people leave their keys in their cars. In both cases, there is no expectation of B&E or theft.

What the Grandparent is saying is that the original post used the wrong analogy in saying that 'just because his door is open doesn't mean people can come in and take what they like.' The reply to that was (in very simple terms) that by using Kazaa, the proper analogy would be to say 'I'm leaving my front door open while I leave town. Anyone who wants to come in and take stuff is welcome' (we'll ignore the fact that in Kazaa world, files are not taken, but copied (I hate that tired argument on semantics))

So to sum up, grandparent didn't say people who leave their door open EXPECT people to come in and take stuff, but if they're comparing it to such an activity as using Kazaa, then the analogy needs to be reworked. All caught up now? Good.

Standard framerate for film is 24 frames per second. If you want to slow it down to two seconds, you need to shoot 48 successive frames in the course of one second and then play those back at the standard 24 per second, so to get 3 seconds, you'd actually need 60 cameras.

And 60 at $10 a pop (not counting tax) has already got you up to $600...and that's not counting the equipment to synchronize all 60 of those camera's to fire on cue.

How many of those 'would-be programmers,' who wouldn't have had the opportunity to learn programming without this sort of 'point and click' freedom, could turn out to be revolutionaries and iconclads in their field? Sure, you might discover only one true genius and master of his craft versus 1000 dolts, but doesn't that make it worth it? As an artist and aspiring filmmaker (making FULL use of the digital revolution to break in to cinema), I'd have to say YES, IT DOES!

The same goes for freedom of speech, Gun control, Copyright law (and any other host of controversies in our world). Namely, you try to choose the best for the majority and take the good with the bad. Saying that we shouldn't lower the barrier for 'would-be' programmers because they'll muck up the programming pool is like saying only a specified type of people should breed. Only a few should have privacy. Only the elite should vote. Only White People should learn! ...see where I'm going?
