I purchased a daily planner for 25 bucks and kept the other 400 bucks for myself! Sure, it requires a little physical movement to unsnap the thing and turn pages, but it'll bring back some nostalgia from years past, and as far as I can tell, it does the same thing.
I graduated from a CS dept. right before the Java wave took. We started with FORTRAN (about 3 months worth) and moved on to C and later C++. Now, because of the position I took, I program mainly in Java.
The difference is that Java teaches good OO (since it is required) concepts that are hopefully also being taught in the curriculum. However, procedural coding is also importiant (for example, most games are not pure OO because of memory overhead and speed etc). So I would say knowing both is a benifit.
Now, as to what language should be taught...
I make this point strongly, CS is not about programming. It's about solving problems, the fact that a computer is used to do so is secondary. Any good CS student should be able to sit down and not only be able to decide what the best language for the job is, but also learn how to use it and get the job done. Whether it's C for games, or Java for a web app, or perl, or python, or whatever.
So concerntrate on the concepts. Java is impressive on a resume, so is C and so is C++, but proving you are adaptable and resourceful and that you understand concepts is way more valuable any day than what language you learned on.

Sure, except for the fact that you will need to hook all your lights up to a no-doubt really expensive computer, with no-doubt really expensive software.

And who the hell talks like that? The most amazing part of the story is that "Criminal # 1" has a girlfriend!
Yes, I agree that this does put him in a beneficial position to grab some extra loot, however I've learned that accepting counter offers is never a good thing, here's why:
1. If they offer a raise only when your about to leave, this shows you how much they really care about you, only doing what they have to keep you there.
2. That doesn't change the working environment or the projects you work on, if you don't like doing what you are doing, then you should not stay. Tis better to enjoy your work than to have a new TV if you know what I mean.
3. What good is a raise if the company goes under shortly anyways, now you have no money and no offers...
In this case, I would not bargain because it sounds like you don't enjoy the job (I know what it's like in a company with bad management) and that you would be happier elsewhere.
Thanks for listening to my 2 cents..

And I've learned a lot about the differences between the degrees. Me and my pal are the only CS majors working for this software company. Here's what we deal with daily.
Our company seems to think that memory leaks are ok, because "they'll be running windows and they will have to reboot every couple days anyways, plus they should have 3 GB ram in the server anyways"
It's ok to hit the database every nanosecond and not do any caching. They need to have a heafty machine running the DB anyways, and why are the complaining that our software is slow? It run's fine here when we have 3 users connected at the same time.
I have fought and fought to teach them what proper OO design is, and to seperate business logic code from the GUI. Not to mention that the overall design of our software is so coupled that breaking it out into a web based application will be almost impossible, but that remains to be the long term plan.
Here's the difference. CS is mostly oriented on design and theory, not coding. Anyone can learn to code, all you have to do is understand a syntax. CS is the study of solving problems, while MIS steers more towards business management and system administration (which isn't bad). However, there is a big difference between the two, and some companies don't realize this. That's why people say you can get the same job. I believe though that this will change as more and more people become more and more knowledgable about computers and how they work.
IBM is a large beast. It's not surprising to me (I was an intern there for a summer) that one part of IBM is all over Linux, another part refuses to support it.
Most likely the Laptop people don't care what the Linux/open source people are doing.

Why are they always bragging about how they have software that does many of the things that hardware normally does? I like software and all, but like any engineer, I realize that hardware has the ability to do things faster and better in some cases. I know we all don't want to render Quake 3 with out our video cards!!!
Is there someting that I don't get here, have they made their software tools faster than their respective hardware tools??
