It is interesting that the Internet was viewed as a kind of egalitarian utopia not too long ago. Some people still hold this view, but in reality, it is becoming a constant war zone.
It is sad really. For the first time in human history the general public had the widest collection of human knowledge available at their fingertips. There was a point where the Internet was far more valuable than going to a library, but it seems to be slipping backwards.
Doing a search usually ends up with completely bogus results artificially inflated by people interested in increasing their hits or getting more ad revenue. More and more top search results seem to be nothing more than portal sites that list millions of keywords in an effort to draw you to their lame Yahoo.com ripoff site which has no information at all pertaining to your search results.
Now that many corporations have woken up to the fact that allowing the general public such wide unfettered access to information is a terrible thing for their bottom line. Companies that relied on information being difficult to obtain are absolutely frightened that it can be duplicated and massively distributed to a billion people in a few minutes.
they know that the only way to make it is to get people listening to their music
Make what? Getting signed by a major record label is what they're most likely after. Every artist out there would probably die for a chance to be the next big thing making millions of dollars from this exact same set of corporations we're bitching about. Sure, there are exceptions, but wave a million dollars in front of anyone's face and you'll catch their attention. What's the point of being a popular band if you're not rich too?
What the RIAA is accomplishing, is simply seriously decreasing the amount of shares on P2P networks, leaving only pr0n and unknown artists.
So instead of hurting big time labels and rich artists you're going to pirate the music of the poorer independent artists. They rely even more on whatever small income they can make from selling 5-10 thousand CDs in a regional market. Pirating their music doesn't help them, but buying their CD off of cdbaby.com or somewhere does. Not to mention you can stick it to the RIAA by not giving your money to their artists.
What percentage of people who intend to install Linux are going to jump through these hoops?
Why bother jumping through hoops anyway? Just order your computer without an operating system or, if offered, choose Linux if that's what you intend to run. I don't understand this huge issue people are having. It's like complaining that whenever you go into the woman's locker room someone kicks you in the nads. Well, stop doing it!
There are thousands of vendors out there that will configure a PC for your with the option of no operating system or many even install Linux for you. Just because Dell/HP/whatever doesn't do it doesn't mean you're stuck paying a Microsoft Windows "tax".
I don't like to do it, but I had no choice if I wanted to listen to it.
Yes you did, you could NOT LISTEN TO IT! Downloading it from a P2P network is illegal. If you can't play the copy protected CD then you should boycott the record company that produced it until they do away with that broken copy protection. Stealing the music and listening to it anyway doesn't solve anything.
Is this a Slashback from 1982 or something? What's there to ask Slashdot about Rechargeable batteries? You recharge them instead of throwing them away, this is not new technology.
I have an iPod but half the time it's connected to my stereo system -- dont you realize people will probably connect this to their home systems or friend systems?! If you are paying $300+ for this wouldn't you want the latest in multi-channel sound!?
OK, someone has to say it. If it doesn't play Ogg Vorbis files there's no way in hell I'm going to buy this thing. Does it run Linux? Imagine a Beowulf cluster of of Sony PSP handhelds! *sigh*
Unfortunately, most everyone will shrug off the work required to upgrade to ipv6. What we have now works fine for now and until something comes dangerously close to breaking, it will not change.
The trouble is it's a chicken and egg situation. Nobody is going to switch to IPv6 because none of their applications support it. Nobody is going to write IPv6 applications (except hard core geeks) because nobody has an IPv6 connection.
Did anyone else just stare blankly at the subject for a few second and wonder who took what kind of drugs?
Yes, but then I clicked on the link and am even further confused. Where are the screenshots? Does it use OpenGL or some proprietary graphics interface? Basically I'm wondering what this thing looks like and how good the graphics are. The web site is unimpressive to say the least.
You don't *have* to buy the new version. The old ones continue to work perfectly well. People generally upgrade because they want to.
Riiiiight. You don't HAVE to run any software on it either, but people generally prefer to. If you want to run any commercial software you generally need at least 10.1.x, and most newer stuff is requiring at least 10.2.x. So yes, you have to buy the newer version unless you're satisfied doing nothing but web browsing and running terminals.
Who cares about "feature comparison" and stuff like that.. I want benchmarks! I want to look at the pretty pictures!
Hey, don't knock it. I don't download and run ANYTHING without screenshots. If a company or website is too lame as to not provide up-to-date screenshots then I look elsewhere. Unfortunately this means I can't use most big name software since they refuse to offer screenshots, much less a free trial period.
Running the monitor at 800x600 and being comfortable when working? Or running the monitor at 1600x1200 and not being able to do anything because you can't read the screen?
The waste is being tricked into buying an LCD for 3 times the cost of a CRT of equivalent size because somebody says they're phasing them out. I'll believe that when the moon falls out of the sky. CRTs aren't going *anywhere* anytime soon. Maybe in the 22nd century. CRTs are still much much nicer than LCDs for everything IMHO.
I'll admit, it's the funniest thing I've seen in a long time, but that shouldn't make it embarrassing for him. Lots of people make a good living doing seemingly foolish things.
He could be the next Ben Stiller or Adam Sandler! OK, probably not.
Unless he put it in a place designated for shared taped or handed it to them saying it was a gift, the four comitted theft by taking at least.
I guess the Star Wars Kid is working under MPAA/RIAA copyright infringement law. Normally the kids would've gotten suspended for a few days for stealing, but in the modern world you get $100,000 fines per infringement and jail time.
If I own part of a corporation, and that corporation owns a recording, do I not have rights to that recording?
Uhhh, no? Otherwise why wouldn't you just buy 1 share of Sony and AOL-Time-Warner, etc.? If that argument held any water at all you'd be legally able to download any song you wanted by a company you had a share in.
I know as a parent, the KID movies are the ones you end up BUYING, as they are most likely to be watched over and over and over again for the next several years... and disney is the most common of that genre.
I really pity parents. Everytime I go visit my buddy anymore the only thing we end up watching is some idiotic Disney cartoon with his kid plastered 18" from the front of his television staring like it's some kind of God. If I ever have kids I'm not going to let them watch TV at all. Yea, yea, I know, that'll last ten minutes.
You know, I have to admit I listen to a lot of "modern rock" by RIAA artists. Frankly, these Indie artists on CD Baby sound just as good, if not better. I guess the only difference is the RIAA artists got that big record contract deal and these guys don't. Doesn't mean they're any less talented. Thanks for the link, I think I'm going to be spending a few hundred bucks here tonight finding some new music to listen to.
I would suggest listening to other music. Indie lables and the like.
In regards to that, can anyone recommend a good site dedicated towards getting into Indie music? I will be boycotting the RIAA from now on as well, but I would hate to never listen to music again. Where can I get a list of "safe" alternatives to the RIAA so that I won't be sued? I prefer to be able to listen to them before I commit to buying a full CD. P2P networks seem to be out completely since people are being sued by the RIAA whether the music is owned by their member companies or not. Personally I would think that's illegal, but with enough cash you can do anything in this world.
Of course you could just for BSD where the law-suits have already come and gone
Are you so sure? Maybe SCO just hasn't gotten around to suing the BSD camps yet. They are clearly insane so don't think you guys are immune to future lawsuits.
and yes this is some sort of device, there are signs saying that cellphone signals are blocked all over the hospital.
I don't get that. Isn't the point that cell phones could interfere with the sensitive medical equipment? So they broadcast a much more powerful signal to disrupt cell phones? That doesn't make any sense and nullifies the original intent.
Here, in the land of the midnight sun, we have to pay a recycling and disposal fee for every electronic product. This has an advantage; the store is obligated to take your old TV in return and dispose of it properly. Saves me a trip to recycling plant.
Here in America I can just put it on the tree lawn and guys in a truck will come and cart it away. More often than not these are not garbagemen though and are in fact scavengers. It's funny to watch some guy in a pickup truck picking through your garbage to find something useful.
A.S. don't want 2 solve the spam problem, they want 2 sell bandaids... the _only_ solution is 2 charge 4 every byte sent, but that's a filthy capitalist/market-oriented idea unacceptable 2 marxist-befuddled computer "scientists"
Holy shit! Who would've thought Prince read Slashdot, much less posted comments. Welcome aboard!
Running a BBS was a blast too. One could actually distinguish themselves easily when there was only a couple dozen major boards in the area, and it was fun fostering the growth of your own little section of the community.
Don't forget the Warez boards! Woohoo. Do I have enough credits to download Space Quest II or do I need to upload something? Gotta think quick, only 45 minutes left on my allotted time today. I wish there was still warez groups around today. Getting free software was kind of nice. Now I have to go out and buy it. That sucks. Whatever happened to warez?

Last time I checked the decent laptops do not come with Windows at all, they run Mac OS X. ;-)

One down, one to go (recording industry) until I win the death pool!
