    With the internet giving worldwide communication and stable voice transmission at your fingertips, why would anyone use ham radio? I think sacrificing the use of an old and tired medium is worth it to bring broadband to more people.

    Your corporate masters would be very very proud of you Stanley. I recommend for additional ass-kissing effort to lobby that the FCC take away the amateur radio space and gives it to a private wireless communications provider who could in turn then sell back monthly access to people with ham equipment for a generous markup of course. And don't say ham radio would be useful in some sort of natural disaster, seeing as the internet WAS designed to withstand a nuclear attack!

    Have you ever seen an actual natural disaster? Generally utilities are the first things to go. I can guarentee you that in a hurricane or tornado Ma Bell's guys aren't going to be up on the pole trying to get your ADSL restablished so you can contact your parents and tell them you're OK. Cell phones are also out.. case in point: New York City, 9-11-2001. It's completely unreliable in a disaster. That was just a couple of buildings. Imagine if the whole city was a smoldering hole in the ground? Do you think your Lawn Guyland ADSL connection would still work?

    How many people still rely on ham radio? Why havent they moved over to something a little more modern? Does ham radio have any advantages over current technology?

    Other than it beinng completely free and open for anyone to use regardless of how much money they have? Ham radio is the one communications medium where everyone is on equal footing. Well, except for those old farking hams with their advanced licenses who think they are farking god because they can do morse code and you're stuck with a god damn no-code tech license. Bah.

    This is especially obvious east-west across Russia. See the crooked line of light that traces its way across to the Pacific? My geography's not so great, so I don't know if there's an obvious reason for it; but it seems more likely there's just a major railroad or highway or something there, and richer cities developed alongside it.

    Looks like the area is along the Trans-Siberian Railroad route. It's similar to how the U.S. looked at night at the turn of the 20th century with towns mostly along railroads.

    I have a samsung n400 and it has the option to disable locator services. I'm sure it's not the only phone out there to offer it.

    My Sanyo 4900 lets you disable it... except for 911. A paranoid person would say that that's as good as useless since if 911 can track your position than so can certain 3 letter agencies.

    Some rich kid could go out and buy the game, and a good character in one day just so he can feel l33t. Whereas some people can't afford to spend more on the game then the monthly cost, are left in the dust.

    So get all your poor friends together in a posse and kill the rich kid. He'll spend the rest of the night crying for more money from his parents to buy a new character and you're free from him. Remember to spend as much time as possible ridiculing him for being rich in order to destroy his online self-esteem to the same level of his offline self-esteem. If he's rich and playing online games he's most likely a jaded loser. Rich people hang out with other rich people in fantastic nightly orgies. Haven't you ever seen Cruel Intentions?

    Supporting more than one OS is likely to cause problems because of a static budget being stretched over development for more than one platform.

    Sounds like a job for Java. The app doesn't have to best fast, just multiplatform.

    Probably started to get flak from his family about marrying a white blonde American woman. Not to sound like a racist, but my friend is a dark skinned muslim, married a white woman, and was practically disowned by his parents. It's enough to drive anyone into insanity. Of course, parents in general can do that. :-(

    Thanks to the 'wonderful' computing monoculture that has developed, we are at the mercy of the Redmond monster.

    I may be pointing out the obvious here, but there's plenty of other platforms that you can be running other than Windows. Microsoft hardly has a monopoly when there are hundreds of operating systems available. Maybe people just prefer Windows because it is superior and has the most software support? If you don't like it then switch to Linux/*BSD/MacOSX, etc.

    What I don't understand is why SuSe and TurboLinux haven't kicked SCO out of the UnitedLinux consortium right now.

    Probably because they forgot it existed. Does anyone actually use United Linux's distribution?

    Once again I have to remind the slashdot crowd that replacing the offending code *now* is not sufficient to relieve you of all damages up until now.

    Hey, a SCO employee found his way to Slashdot. Aren't you a little worried the entire future of your company relies on suing people? If you're a programmer it pretty much makes your job irrelevent to the long term profitability of the company. They'll dump you guys first so they can feed the legal machine.

    So what I want to know is anything with the Linux kernel good to use, or just SUSE? Call me nuts, but I thought that different distributions using the Linux kernel could be pretty damn different as far as security and stability go.

    ObRMS: The headline and article mention Linux, therefore only the kernel is certified. If they had said GNU/Linux then they are referring to the entire operating system distribution which is comprised mainly of GNU tools. :-)

    anyone else remember the other OPIE? What ever happened to that?

    I was confused as well as to what OPIE had to do with a GUI/PIM Project. I guess all the original acronyms were taken and people are starting to overload them. I was hoping it was some kind of one-time password app for Palms. Alas, it's yet another group running Linux on their palmtops. Hardly new or exciting anymore in this age of 200MHz+ processors on handhelds. If they got Linux running on the HP 100LX I'd be much more impressed. Guess I'll have to stick with DOS. :-)

    The problem illustrated here is that often times you don't know what address to whitelist, and hence can't add it ahead of time.

    And before someone says "just whitelist their domain", often times messages come from a completely different domain than the one you've signed up on. Personally that pisses me off, but it's a fact of life of outsourcing I suppose.

    If you realy want to fuck with them go by a dozen shitty low grade 900MHz phones or varying brands and turn them all on near the WAP. That way you'll kill the network entirely instead of just having it run at a slower but still very usable speed.

    That wouldn't do anything to them. Buy a dozen microwaves or 2.4GHz phones perhaps, but 900MHz isn't anywhere near the 802.11b spectrum.

    Why does it disturb you? What else do you think a $200 million stealth fighter is for? Fighters are for killing people and/or destroying their stuff. Hopefully this stuff will be ready when we go to liberate North Korea and China. :-)

    Maybe not very likely, but if the Radio Licensing Authority gets one good complaint about an illegal transmitter (doesnt matter if its short range) and they nail the owner, they might decide to make an example out of whoever sold it to them.

    Geez, these UK guys really take this whole spectrum thing seriously. What's next, forcing people to buy a license to listen to the radio or watch television!? What kind of crazy socialist world is this turning into?

    Heating the CPU can easily damage it if you are not careful about how hot you let it get. So it is usually very dangerous for you to try to remove the substance from the CPU if you have not already done it several times (or don't mind wasting whatever you spend on that CPU when you need to go out and buy a new one).

    You know, that sounds like a major pain in the ass to save a few degrees. Maybe manufacturers should just make cooler CPUs instead of us needing industrial strength copper heatsinks and 19mm fans. I really miss the days when a heatsink and fan were optional on a CPU. I think my 386 was the last of that kind though. My 486DX2/66 ran fine after the fan on the heatsink failed though so the heatsink was good enough. Even most Pentium systems were just fine with a big heat sink and no fan. Nowadays all my Athlon systems sound like I'm at an airport with the 5 or 6 fans I need in my system to keep it cool.

    The problem is that they don't seem to be suing the downloaders, only the people sharing the music. That's actually the only sane way to do it and is much more effective at combating piracy. If everyone stops sharing files then the network collapses and their goal is achieved.

    People need to stop complaining. If you don't pay off your congressmen then you certainly shouldn't be expecting them to be looking out for your interests should you? Setup a Paypal donation fund or something and get people to send money into a Congressional Slush Fund for these kinds of things. Want to have legal file sharing? Donate $100 to the Congressional Slush Fund. Hell, it can't be anymore illegal than what corporations are doing with our representatives already. Money talks these days.

    I pray that people will use TiVos more than they use these crappy boxes, because I could go on about their inferiority, but, well, it's TW. I mean really, even the grandparent admits it "reboots when you overload it." My TiVos only reboot when I unplug them. Just sickening.

    Oh get off your high-horse already. What TW is doing is awesome and I hope more cable companies start to offer PVR functionality in the future. The main reason is there is NO loss in quality, no IR blasters to worry about, no third party services to pay, etc. Plain and simple integration into the cable box is what we should've had years ago.

    The only thing we need to make sure of is that these new services let you offload the programs you've recorded via a network or firewire to another computer to archive. I've got over 200 hours of shows on my current PVR that I simply do not want to delete so I need to invest in a DVD-R drive soon since my PVR is half full (400 GB max MythTV box).
