The problem here as I understand it was the machines inability to detect a certain type of ink that was used on some of the ballots. If they had used your idea, to use two machines and check to make sure the counts match, the counts would have matched. Both machines would have missed the same number of ballots due to the ink problem. Before you do a recount, you need a reason to do one.
I think beyond just using two machines, you also need a count on how many total ballots you have and check that count against the total counts that you get from the two machines. If your lower on your total counts than on the count of the total ballots, you know it's missing some. But don't these people test the damn machines with the pens they are handing out? Or did someone bring their own pen or something?
ICQ comes from ham radio... that's a common call using morse code that basically means "anyone wanna chat?". It's much easier to tap out three letters than a whole sentance... especially when you are first trying to make contact. Your signal may be weak or whatever, so it keeps things simple until you make contact, then you get down and dirty and start tapping at fifty or sixty words a minute or whatever. So ICQ makes sense, but the others you offer as examples are pretty dumb, and I agree with the rest of what you say.:)
It works beautifully for me. All of my settings, bookmarks, extensions, and themes were still there from.7 to.8. Themes didn't work of course, ohter than the default FireFox theme so I had to switch to default and restart. After that everything has worked perfectly... os far anyway. Haven't really noticed much new though... other than the download manager looks different and I now have a DeepestSender button on my bookmarks bar... which doesn't work...but that's DeepestSenders fault, not FireFox's and there is a new version of DS out that fixes that but it's not on the mirrors yet. *sigh*

I read this thinking he decorated his Mac Cube... and thought that was pretty cool. Maybe put some christmas lights inside or something... but this is just his work cube... not as cool.. IMO.
I was just going to post the same thing you did. Scarecrow rules. I always forget to get my movies back on time though... I pay more in late fees than rentals... heh.
How do you know that more G5 clusters aren't already in the planning stages? Not that many clusters are built and each one of the clusters that does get built requires careful planning to ensure it meets the needs of whoever is buying it. The G5 has not been on the market that long and I'm sure we'll see many more clusters made with G5's, especially after the final results are in on the one VT built.
That's why I only have live audiences in my car for the commute to work and at home when I relax. Just last night I had Metallica over for a set and a few nights ago Linkin Park stopped by and performed on my long commute to work. Was pretty cramped in my little car but they managed.
I love my Jaton dvd player. I can go to Scarecrow video in Seattle and rent whatever I want and not have to worry about what region it is or if it's PAL or NTSC. I just pick what I want, pay, then go home and watch it. Exactly how it should work right?
The best part is when I buy dvd's that are PAL encoded. I have friends who have all region players but nobody I know has a PAL decoder (my dvd player has one built in) so I never have to loan those movies out.
About not being able to record broadcast shows... I never do anyway. I have a huge collection of movies and I hardly watch cable at all... I sometimes turn on MTV2 when I'm cleaning or cooking or doing something else where I dont' want to stop to grab a cd or listen to mp3's. It's nice to hear new stuff every once in a while too... I guess if I had TIVO I would watch more tv... but then again I kind of like not watching so much tv... I used to watch it all the time and I felt kinda chained to it. It's like a good book that you don't want to put down except with a book you set the rules. With tv (pre-TIVO) you had to play but their rules. They tell you when you can watch, and how much you get to see... so it may take 10 years for a series to play from beginning to end... but a series of books would be much quicker, and more fulfilling.
I meant they are like MS in that they dominate their market. MS dominates most thngs that they get into... such as office software, operating systems, etc. Google dominates the search engine business at the moment and I don't see that changing.
Not really. WIth the pest control issues it's usually not a matter of life and death. With this it is. If you are terminally ill, your going to die. If you try this, you may die or you may not. At least you have a chance.
"What are my chances of you going out with me?
About one in a million.
You mean I have a chance?!?!?!?!"
Is it really that hard to get a license? I thought the hoops were easier to jump through these days... back when I got mine (95) it's wasn't very hard... a bit of studying for a couple weeks and then a series of tests and your good to go (if you pass the tests).
I've been seeing ads for Napster 2 all over the place. MTV and several other channels have been showing them. I watched a lot of sports over the weekend and they seemed to be on quite a few channels. Also saw a couple of ads for iTunes... I sure wish I had the money to buy an iPod.
What do they want to know next? How often I take a shit.
We already know that. We know where you live. We know where you shit. We know how often. And we also know that you have a bad case of worms. Maybe the raw pork the other night wasn't such a good idea.
It's not what is happenng with the Canadian Dollar, it's what is happening to the US dollar. The Canadian dollar isn't changing much against other currencies while the US dollar has been falling for some time against all foreign currencies.
I don't mind if there is parity between the US dollar and the Canadian dollar. That makes sense to me for some reason. What bothers me is how the US dollar compares to the Euro and the Yen. I hope it doesn't continue dropping much longer or we arrogant Americans won't be able to buy much since most things are imported these days.
Exactly! It wsn't just IE that killed Netscape. MS wanted to hange Netscape and Netscape bought the rope. They finally decided to rewrite the damn thing and how long did that take? It took forever and by the time they finally had a good product again (how long has Mozilla been on par with IE? 6 months or so?) IE was the dominant browser.
Yes people will go and download your product even though there is one built in. Notice how many people use Yahoo instant messenger. A lot of those users are running Windows which has a built in IM client but they chose to go and download someone elses product. AIM is the same except with that it's mostly used by people who either use AOL, used it at one time, or communicate with those who use it. Mozilla can be the same way once people start to hear about it.
It's just now to the point where I tell friends and family to check it out. I switched from Mozilla to Firebird when.7 came out and I love it. It's much better than IE and I really like it.
Now MS is going to try to do the same thing they did with IE with their search engine. Lets bundle and nobody will use anything else. That wasn't the case with IE and it won't be the case now. People used IE because Netscape was crap. Google is the best engine out there and most people know this. They can go ahead and bundle it and some less fortunate people won't know the difference but most will, and most will continue to use Google.
By becoming public they raise capital that they can use to further expand their R&D efforts. They can then hire more employees, bigger and better equipment, and they can take more risk. They turn a profit today but their profit margin isn't such that they can take much risk on new technologies. They can't spend a lot of resources on a technology that while it may be the greatest thing ever if it works, may fail in which case we end up bankrupt.
Everyone keeps talking about how the IPO will be the end of Google. Why? The whole point of going public is to raise funds for expansion (that's supposed to be the point anyway). Obviously if their intention was merely to get rich and then walk away, they would have went public a while back. Google was around before the bubble broke. They could have went public back then but they chose not to. They had no need to go public back then and maybe they still don't but they are looking towards the future and seeing a need for extended cash reserves, more funding for R&D, the ability to take larger risks that offer bigger returns, etc.
Don't assume that Google won't put this money too good use. Sure some people will become quite wealthy when they go public but that's the idea behind being in business, and when you've done something as cool as Google, I think you deserve to make a few bucks.
That's not all they offer. They have deals with other companies in which they lease their results as well as the technology behind those results. An IPO price usually isn't way off the mark.. ok, it's off the mark some, but not this much so I think there is a lot we don't know about Google or we're not seeing the forest for the trees. We know that Google has their search page. They have several actually. Web search, news group search, image search, etc. They also have enterprise products like their search appliance.
They are also actively researching and developing new and innovative technologies and expanding their existing technologies. It's not like they are sitting around doing nothing. "Hey, we've got a pretty good search engine... lets sit around and get drunk now.. our work is done." It's not like that at all.
The reality is that the greater Google's technologies and services become, the faster and harder they work on newer and more exciting innovations. I don't see them like most companies. To me it seems like the people who are employed by Google love their jobs and the more they accomplish, the more motivated they become. Don't think of Google being in 5 years what it is today. It will grow exponentially and continue to impress and amaze us like it has done. Google isn't Yahoo, Netscape, or any of the other thousands of companies who have at one time dominated but let it all slip away. They are like MS. They are in the lead and that's not going to change.
because they're already the king of Internet search, they can't dominate it much more than they do
This simply isn't true. There are other search engines and people do use them. You think Google is the king because you use it and love it. Me too but I know lots of people who don't use Google or who have never heard of it. My Dad uses the MSN search and thinks it's the greatest thing in the world. I've shown him Google but he's the type that wants to do everything his own way (that's why he has WebTV instead of a computer).
If Google really was at the absolute peak and it wasn't possible for them to dominate any more than they do now, there would be no competition. That is the only way you can reach that ultimate domination is by not having any competition. None. If you have any at all, you are not 100% dominate.
MSN Search is a player and will only get stronger the more it's tied in to other MS products. Yahoo has always been pretty strong in the search engine arena mainly due to the bundling of other features. I know lots of people who use Yahoo for searching. They use it for games, email, and since they are already there so much, they use it for searching. These are all users that Google could steal and become more dominating. Therefore your theory that they have no where to go but down is false.
They did have specs before hand. They said ok, we take this many and the max theoretical performance is X. We scale that back to Y percent and that's what we will likely achieve. We need to get to Z performance level and Y percent of X is above the Z threshold so we're good to go. Now lets talk price. It's the cheapest available and they can get it to us to meet our deadline? Great. Lets order.
They new in advance what they could likely achieve with this cluster and they have surpassed what they were expecting. Now with some more tweaking they may take it a bit further. It's like a race car engine, you know the specs but once you get it and tune it you can often surpass the specs by a wide margin.

Well, it supposedly comes with bomb racks according to the ebay description.

Go here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/ and look at the bottom left corner. Seems pretty damn confirmed to me.

That's not exactly how it happened. I think the phrase used was more like this:
Go FUCK Yourselves!!!
