Where's the EFF?? Seems to me this should be right up their alley, at least, this is the sort of thing _my_ donation was for. The only thing I can find about Penny Arcade on the EFF site is a link to a PA cartoon about the Blizzard case.
Future CNN reports about dozens of UPS delivery people are getting mugged by redbull-toting geeks who want to nab these puppies and create beowulf clusters of them...
someone like Adrian Belew or Allan Holdsworth has to say about it. They, and others, have been working with and actively using this type of technology for almost 2 decades. Roland had their GR-707 guitar synth out back in th early 80's. Sure it was rather low-tech by today's standards, but it sure was "out there" back then.
Radio's nice for finding out new about bands, and music.
I have to completely disagree with you there. Maybe where you are that's true, but in upstate NY it's not - not even close. Unless... you consider hearing 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' on K-ROCK ever other hour new. The only time I listened to the radio was in my car. The FM receiver in my car went kaput almost 2 years ago, so all I have now is AM, which is fine since I can get NPR. I haven't missed FM radio in the least. Growing up in upstate NY, FM radio was, and still is complete crap - unless you _like_ being bombarded with the same three Boston, Journey, and Rush songs hour after hour after hour after hour on any of the four AOR stations in the area. It's gotten no better. Hell, even the Syracuse University college channel was the first college radio to go top 40 (in 1988 I think?):-( My buddy down the street showing me King Crimson and Fishbone for the 1st time was one of the most amazing things my ears had ever experienced, and I've never heard them on the radio around here - ever. It hasn't gotten any better either. Aside from those 4 age old AOR channels, a country channel or 2, and a couple of religious programming stations, you can actually pick up K-ROCK on THREE different locations on the FM dial around here, it's awful.
Our education system should consist of the basic fundimentals..Math general scientific method, language and grammer, and logical thought are the most important things we can teach. Everything else stems from these base things, and should be taught as such.
Perhaps a bit OT, but the only thing I'd like to see added to this list is civics. I agree wholeheartedly with the rest of the list.
In the school district I grew up in (class of '87), there were _no_ civics classes, nada, zip - aside from "registering to vote" in 12th grade. People around here, incuding myself for the most part, seem so clueless when it comes to things like local issues, that I can't imagine anyone having a true understanding of what's going on on a national level; why, or how it really came about. "Social Studies" classes were basically a joke, and barely even touched on history, much less "current events" or how the political and electoral process works. Any info I've wanted on that I've had to learn about on my own - not necessarily a simple task when you're not really even sure of the basics.
I used to use and highly recommend drake all the time. That ended with Mandrake 8.2... Their business tactics, and shoddy software have made me think twice. Aside from a super simple install and urpmi, there's just no obvious benefit to Mandrake IMO - ymmv.
Yep...they begged for money a year ago too. That's about the only time you ever see anyone from Mandrake show their face on alt.os.linux.mandrake.
Sure, pay however much $$ to be able to join the 31337 Mandrake club and use the "Mandrake Expert" forums - which is nothing but other users posting the same unanswered stuff you're about to post. Last I saw, there were literally thousands of unanswered posts there - and the ones that were answered weren't done so by any drake techs/employees - they were answered by the other people who got ripped off to join too.
Sure - pay $90 to buy the "Power Pack Edition" at a store, or wait literally months for them Mandrake to ship it to you, just to find out that the downloadable version has some THREE HUNDRED more packages included with it...THREE HUNDRED!!!! We're not talking totally obscure stuff either...things like slocate and grip and joe - stuff people actually tend to use, and that's not to mention all the devel packages that were missing...from the "Power Pack Edition". Power pack this! Provided explanations/excuses were as lame as they possibly could be. Click Here for more info on that little fiasco.
I still don't know, nor do I intend to find out, whether or not they've finally dis-allowed kernel upgrades to be done via the "Mandrake Update" tool - hosing the system in the process. How many "HELP!!!!!!!!! I ran the update tool and now I can't boot!!!!!!" threads have been seen all over usenet and message boards? Not many lately, so one can only hope they've fixed that lil snafu.
Then they shipped drake 8.2 with KDE 2.2.2 was - a big mistake IMO. KDE 3.0 was released within 2 weeks after 8.2 - and upgrading KDE is *not* a newbie-friendly proccess for a suposedly newbie-friendly distro.
Mandrake admin tools, that either crash the machine or do nothing at all... msec... a tool that'll change/revert settings that the machine's admin has made? Don't even get me started...
Have you ever tried to submit a bug to them? You have a better chance of winning the lotto.
Mandrake? Schmandrake.
Want to learn linux? Get Debian, Slack, or Redhat. Want to learn Mandoze98? Get Mandrake.
I didn't even bother with Mandrake after 8.2 - I just couldn't see the point. They've sunk ther own ship. This is just my 2 cents folks...come to your on conclusions.
I read this essay a long time ago. I even find myself re-reading it from time totime. It's what made me try linux in the first place.
I wanted a free tank:^)
And what about students who must use some wretched program that's not stable under anything but Win2K? How are they expected to complete their classwork?
Do you really know of any classwork that would require something like that? Good wordprocessors are available on any platform - and that's 99% of what is used for classwork other than the odd CAD app.
You know, this IS an educational institution -- why don't you try educating them?
Hmmm...perhaps that's precisely what they're doing and don't even realize it? Digital Rights restrictions/proposed legislation are plentiful, and getting moreso every day, and people (other than various well informed geeks) don't really realize it.
Even if they're not doing for educational purposes per say, they're still teaching people about the direction Digital Rights are going. Perhaps issues like this are just what people need to scare them a bit and let them see what's happening...

Scary when the tanks are being dwarfed by their remote controls 8-)
You're joking, right?

Geraldo is employed by Fox... 'nuff said.

John Cryer's finest work.

I'm just a fat old guy who posts on Slashdot.
:P
Heh... you're not the only one
I have to agree - I've found some killer stuff this way myself.
Outside?
But that big yellow thing in the sky hurts my eyes!
A tad too subtle, methinks.
I don't disagree...epecially when I _still_ get sent links to this site from people who thinks it's legit.

There's a decent tutorial, including sample hosts files, and instructions for various OS's here . Their hosts list is kept fairly up to date.
