Not the sexiest of laptops and you need to buy the "slice" battery with it to get anything more than 2 hours when not plugged in. But it works brilliantly with Fedora 15 and gnome 3 (I like gnome 3 but you can KDE or gnome 2). Install was simple;
Insert Fedora 15 live CD (copied to USB the X1 doesn't have a internal CDROM, you won't miss it).
Boot into Fedora 15
check that every thing works (it does, including bluetooth)
click install to HD
profit
It is seriously that easy, it has work perfectly for 3 months now and I like you came from a mac book (Lion was just not for me).
And when you're sitting in Jail for 30 days as a suspect terrorist I am sure you will be more than willing to give them your keys and passwords to all your encrypted information just to be free again. Encryption only prevents people from listening in, it is not very effective when you have been arrested or the law compels you to give over your password.
I think it will be cool to see files added to and passed around through this system, say something like daily journal with one entry from every person that picks up the file.
but in reality I think it is going to end up with full of trolls, p0rn and people looking for another way to "illegally" share copyrighted material.
You then strongarm those machines' ISPs to disconnect their customers until they get their shit together.
What is the difference between and ISP cutting of a customers account because of a "suspected" infection and an ISP doing the same thing because the suspect piracy etal. You can't switch between privacy and a police state just to suit the needs/wants of the moment.
I agreed with you up until I read Now I'm willing to bend that a little bit, like if a mass murderer just escaped from prison at no time should the Law be bent. It doesn't matter what the reason is. If the law is wrong, make a new one, vote it in etc... Bending the law just to suit a certain situation is stupid.
I couldn't agree more. If I was able to tele-commute and lost 10% of my salary I would still save money in the long run due to the reduction in costs associated with getting to work (not to mention being able to buy a cheaper house away from the city). The only down side is that I have now moved from a pure tech role to a management role, which means I have to meet with people and video conferences just don't cut it.
Considering that Slashdot didn't even bother to report on this New York Times story about Slashdot [nytimes.com] (even though it appeared in the Firehose [slashdot.org] twice [slashdot.org] (at least),
I can see why they didn't bother to report that NT times story, it is utter sh!t. I am sorry but really there is nothing news worthy in the whole piece. Maybe their point has some weight to it but the way there reported it definitely didn't. They could have (and probably did) just of made it up.
Really? You have seen this? I assume it might be true but I have never known someone who is confused by what to buy just go out and grab the first thing they can see, especially if there is a significant expense involved. I have seen people follow trends to help them make up their mind but I would call that a choice rather than indiscriminate purchasing.
After all, this slashvertisement is oh so keen in lauding the qualitative and subjective advantages of this toy but it doesn't even come near presenting the costs associated with forcing your company to be profoundly dependent (if not held hostage) of hardcore computer for support, maintenance of both hardware and cooling rig and upgrades.
how is this different to choosing a blade solution from another OEM? That is why OEM's love blades because you are generally locked into there hardware for the next 4-7 years due to the life of the chassis lasting that long.
Wall Street has attracted the best and the brightest of all of our people, math PhD's, engineers, those with an excellent ability to see the broad patterns in society.
What is it that attracted them in the first place? Was it passion for the job? Was it the money? Was it the work location etc....? You seem to be inferring that it was the money. If that is the case then I highly doubt that those people would have contributed anything to any other field of endeavor as they would have always followed the money to what ever Job paid best.
It is more like; take a active interest in your kids lives, talk to them even about the hard subjects. Let them learn from your experiences and mistakes. Don't rely on technology, other people and laws to do your job for you.
Bring up kids _IS_ the hardest/most rewarding thing you (or anyone) will ever do.

Exactly, I thought that this was obvious?
Agree, your point is really well written.
I would mod you up but I don't have mod point. Hmm maybe that is a job for "MobileWorks"
Does this mean that the car works better without humans? The "every small" sample size study says yes!

If you think the only reason sun went under was because it was starting to embrace FOSS, then you are horribly miss informed.
But surely you can just despose on the bottle by throwing if off the end of the earth.
here here, well said
Did anyone else think that too?
but you quite clearly do.... you have 4 of them.
Could not agree more!

Wow those two review/rating pages look nothing a like! I wonder how accurate the can be ;)

if I had any mod points at all I would mod you up! Thanks for the clear line of thought.
Reading TFA has been the best laugh I have had all morning!

Agree, it is total BS
I think this line says it all really.

and here you go ruining the fun with logic and facts ;)
No it's not.
