This is all awesome stuff, but really when confronted with all of this I would just go next door or go to the library to look up what I wanted on the net and email whoever I pleased (facebook etc..) and so will these kids.
limiting Kids is not going to teach them anything you have to educate to do the right thing.
and turn the things off when you don't want them to use it.
That project you stated looks fare to complex for a single home user to manage. Yes you could get OS X/Windows 7/Linux to have schedules to shut things down, block sites etc... but really it is easier and cheaper to have a lockable cupboard and lock the computer/s up when you don't want them to be use and just make rules for your kids to follow about usage hours/grounding etc...
Don't rely on technology to parent for you (from a family of 4) you need to do it yourself. If you don't trust your kids with what they look up when you are not there then only bring out the computers when you are there.
One thing to note; children will _ALWAYS_ find a way around any security/punishment you give them (even the physical one I am talking about). The best solution to this is active parenting and trying to be an unobtrusive part of their lives
Are we talking about the same company. I am not an anti apple person I own a PB and PM but never have apple products been cheap. They _ALWAYS_ sell at a premium compared to similar products in the market.
It looks like these are patents for hardware that the rest of the industry already pays royalties for. This smells like Apple trying to treat itself differently from everyone else not the currently market leader "grasping at straws"
Totally understand where you are coming from but wouldn't this make more sense
"The formation has probably been around for a long time, but it's only now getting attention: "Before the Internet and digicams, people might have mentioned it to a few friends and that would be it,"
I love this idea, I think that you have missed the whole idea of the phone admittedly it TFA didn't really point it out that well.
The first reason I love this one is what it is made out of. If you are like me your phone will only last 1 year dude to abuse. So if the phone is already made of recyclable materials I feel less guilty when I get rid of it a year later.
The second reason is the solar changer. Again I think you missed the point of the solar part of this phone (and the author of the article did to). I don't believe the the solar panel is there to charge the phone completely from zero(it has a wall charger for that), but rather it is there to add a little charge to the phone from time to time. For people that don't spend 99% of there life in doors IE out in the sun and away from wall sockets then this can be a real boon.
Or has some totally irrational motive, for all we know.
Having worked for a company (non-indian) trying to sell their product into the USA I can tell you one reason why they might have done it. It is not because of $. To sell in the USA as a foreign company you have to have 1st an office there and 2nd if it is software you are selling you need to have a Local support base or your product just won't sell compared to your local competition.
To think otherwise must mean that you support child predators.
Now I am all for protecting the innocent but to say that everyone else of with a different point of view to yours supports child predators is just ridiculous.
How is installing monitoring software in all telephone switches going to stop child predators? Is there an army of people who are going to sit there and listen to all the phone calls going on? Is there a super computer that can understand all human speach patterns and languages that will flag suspect calls? No I don't think so.
In reality It will only add a little to the evidence when they are caught (99% of what they get tried for would be what they actually did). Where as the chance that something like greece happens again is much more likely.
If a law enforcement agency suspects that someone is a child predator there is nothing wrong with them asking a judge for a warrant to tape a phone line. There is no need for constant monitoring that is open to the first phreaker to come along and hack a cell tower or two.
Until _you_ are actually on the end of someone abusing these powers you will never how bad and open to abuse these powers can truly be.
The United States itself has been attacked. In six hours in August 2006, remote attackers entered computers at the Army Information Systems Engineering Command at Fort Huachuca, Ariz.; the Defense Information Systems Agency in Arlington; the Naval Ocean Systems Center in San Diego; and the Army Space and Strategic Defense Command in Huntsville, Ala. The hackers transported more than 10 terabytes of data to South Korea, Hong Kong or Taiwan, and from there to the People's Republic of China. Each intrusion was only 10 to 30 minutes. The downloaded information included Army helicopter mission-planning-systems specifications and flight-planning software used by the Army and Air Force.
In every review of a new "smart phone" posted on/. there is always one person that gets modded up for
Mobiles these days jut have too much crap and not enough just plain phone.
If want a plain phone then go out and get one. Stop whining about the smart phones. Here check out Motorola or Nokia it wasn't that hard to find plain phones
I agree with you, not to condone what China did and is doing, but legally Yahoo! did nothing wrong. Basically the guy didn't read his EULA. Unless you have it in writing don't assume your information is safe.
I think pretty much every free email company (included ISPs) will hand over your email data when officially requested.
But you have to admit that the schematic for the iphone is going to be a lot more complicated that a transistor radio. There for not able to fit on the back battery cover. It would probably need its own book
It is not really a secret, you can get most EMC clariion arrays to do it and there is a command for dell perc raid controllers to do it. It normally comes under the heading of "LED maintanance" or "LED trouble shooting".
The idea is that if you think you LED indicator lights are fucked run these commands and go have a look.
More of a maintance thing rather than something for sales. But if you made a sale on it more power to you.
Since not being to review games would effectively shut down the site/rag, they piped down and played along. It's been going on with the auto makers for decades.
Yes and No, more often than not the automakers would give the review mags/TV shows a special car. If it was a performance car they were reviewing, that car would arrive with more power, better handling and better brakes than what you could buy on the show room floor. Most of the late 60's and early 70s muscle car performance figures that were stated in the mags of the time where completely wrong because of these "speacial" cars. Now they just send out cars with ALL the options ticked and some options that where cut when the car goes on sale. This way they can say that they never hid anything.
Umm I have defended many products from big corporations on slashdot. Not because I was paid, that would be sweet, but because I actually believe in them and think that they work.
Anytime you have negative PR coming to a large tech company (particularly software companies and the larger the more prevelent the problem) there are dozens of posts defending the company in the comments here that could have come right off an official press release.
maybe they do that because they actually, like me, like the product?
The biggest companies respond to highly moderated negative posts about them even if the story isn't about them. It's pretty clear these companies have full time Slashdotters.
FULL TIME SLASHDOTTERS!!! sweet where do I sign up for that job? Seriously I doubt/. rates really highly in the offices of Bill G and Big Larry the DB man. Also every one gets mod points. If you think a post is corporate BS then use your voice and mod it down problem solved. If you don't have mod points start contributing more to/. and get some
We started our relationshop with IBM on their intel and Linux X series servers and as we grew they moved us to P series servers running AIX which happens to run all linux binaries just fine and even has the same command set.
The "Upgrade" path was easy and plainless and the cost was spread out over years so it kept management and the accountants happy.
Personally I see it as a winning solution for both Linux and IBM.
I know that a lot of you out there will be thinking, "hell ya, it is managements fault we are treating like this so lets get back at them but destroying their systems."
Believe me guys that is not the case, the only people you hurt are your co-workers. I joined a company where a lot of the Admin stuff were fired. Some of them left nice little surprises that went off a couple of days later. Guess who was there until 3am in the morning putting everything back together? I can tell you it wasn't the managers. I can also tell you that those guys that got fired lost many good friends the day they did that and a lot of hard earned respect. Most of them are still looking for jobs a year later as NO ONE from their previous job (which many had held for 6+ years) will give them a good reference anymore because of their actions.
So my point is that if you are pissed off at management then complain or leave. Don't destroy things as it only hurts your co-workers not management.
Or the poster is one of the group trying to raise awareness and garner support for their "class action suit." The reason I say this is that their own site is not even finished and yet it makes the front page of/. and what better place to get anti MS troops than good old/.?
Judging from the article and the video of the poor creature it was already pretty sick and in quite some distress. So it was prpobably going to end up dead in some trawlers nets anyway. Why not bring it back and study it and maybe even give it a chance to recover free from predators?
It wasn't the law suit that stopped them, it was the threat that made their ISP cut them off. The law suit isn't even settled yet. They just need an ISP with bigger balls.

Finally a sane voice in all of this, good to hear
Arrh thank god the voice of reason.
Total agree, if ISP did a decent job then P2P traffic wouldn't be a cost but rather a revenue stream

You are the first person to comment on this rationally and really made me think about it. It has changed my mind on that is happening.
Voice of reason, so rare nowa days.
Have you ever considered one of the netbooks that are out there? They are built just for this purpose.
