I remember there being a program I once tried out, where you ran it on a windows system, and what ever you put on that drive could be seen by everyone else ala mounting a windows share, but the data was not just stored on one machine, it was stored on two. And when you shut down one of those machines, it propagated the survivor to another machine, so it kinda grew and used harddisks over the network. Kinda like a peer-to-peer file server. But I can't remember what it's called... Anybody? I think it was called mango or something, but can't find it! You could set the usage down to 0Mb if you wanted that machine not to contribute to the "collective" and I think there was even a *nix version. Guys? Ideas?
Am I the only person who seems to think hacker is a derogatory term now? Hackers and crackers are too often confused in the press, so to save confusion on who is the most evil, I suggest software hackers in the traditional sense (ie us) change our name to Fairy Godfathers. Both mob-like, and safe. And crackers? Maybe change their names to morons. Just an idea...
Analogue tuner - simple piece of kit. Anyone with an electronic engineering degree could make one - or at least the average electrician could get some spare parts and follow a sheet of instructions. Digital? Nah... You need to spend a s**tload of cash on propriatary rubbish, or buy special pre-encoded chips... Ridiculous! We in Europre ahve PAL - which has sufficient quality for even the best TV. Not only that, but we have analogue TV stations that have great reception. Digital TV has all but failed- sure Mr. Murdock may make his billions through SkyTV, but it's all crap. I still enjoy my 5 channels of proper programming (well, five and ITV are crap... but they're still better than your average SkyTV).
In the UK, it does actually help. That's because our system hit congestion point earlier than US cities, and getting there faster means back roads and overtaking (or more rpecisely, undertaking). Just try getting into Nottingham on a weekday, and you'll know what I mean...
Right, I want to install a patch for Windows from Windows Update. So i do, and it comes up "do you want to reboot your computer"! This is now acceptable proceedure for most, but why? With debian, when I do a apt-get dist-upgrade, it updates a hell of a lot, including security updates, and the server is down for seconds, jsut so it can restart the service. Why can Windows not do this? Ridiculous! I've only once had to reboot my Linux box - and that was to upgrade the kernel. Does Microsoft need to take a page out of the UNIX ideal?
Remember, they just retired the Concorde. If we can't even create affordable supersonic travel, what makes you think we can have space tourism?
Err... If Richard Branson has anything to do with it, Concorde won't be retired. Remember, Concorde gets across the oceans burning a lot more fuel, and hence costs a lot... What is needed is a supersonic plane for super-long haul flights like london to sydney, and for it to cost no more than twice as much as flying via standard jet. Or to apply a crap equation, if it goes twice as fast, twice as expensive, three times three etc... Sounds unreasonable? Currently it's 499 to Sydney... Concorde? For pete's sake... There aren't enough numbers... =)
Skip down to your local 12 year olds house (mind out for the allegations of paedophilia mind you) and see what games he's got (other genders are available...)
Almost certainly he'll have a stack of 18 rated games (18 is the highest classification in the UK) including all the Resident Evils. And the game companies know this. I thought Ali G was the same until I saw a load of 12 year olds imitating his irritating hand snap thingy... Pfffft... Kids these days, huh? =)
70 billion light years? Putting aside the fact that you Americans have polluted our numbering system [spit spit] and you mean 70 thousand million light years, I thought Hubbles constant dictates that the universe is 14,000,000,000 years old... Now nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, so how can it be that big? Surely wormholes aren't the answer... Sure, that's faster than the velocity of light, but in all directions and 5 times faster? Someone care to explain this to me???
Normally on a program you'd do make all ; make install anyway, so I guess not doing modules_install is normal. make install does modules_install anyway.
eh? just make? no bzImage? But surely then there will be a vmlinuz, a bzImage and everything.. Or are we using parameters again in a config file? Or indeed, a make install? One that works with grub? I'm only using lilo because make install is so much easier;)
Publically acceptable reason? WHAT? Explain that one to me! "We've been compromised, so we're going to wait and see what happens, and let our software get old."
Hmmm. Your average business that can afford something like this should at least have one backup, preferably on hard drive or something (like a RAID setup) or a nightly tape backup of all essential work. Even I do backups, and I'm just a student. It's about time we hammered the message home once and for all!
But you're American... Surely you're not suggesting you care about the environment of other countries? Nah....
A macker is someone from the Middlesborough area of the UK. Technically Mackem, but it gets shortened a lot.

Sorry, forgot to be XML compliant. There should be tags around part of that statement...

brings the Atari users telnet, e-mail, a web server and a web browser.
Guess it'll be the PC next then...
I Am Not A Lawyer. All Lawyers are anal anyway, so i guess that makes EVERYONE ANAL!
Tell him it's got impossible to forge writing and pictures on it too... That'll confuse him ;)

Look, at the moment, what America says, goes. What will change it is if they _lose_ a war. Rather than just come to a settlement ala Iraq.
Viola!
;)
Bassoon! Yeah, I know you made a typo, I'm just immature

Look at the New World. The private sector made the journeys, but the flags they flew were that of England, Spain, Portagal and a few others.
;) Can we undiscover it now...
Yeah, I still think that was a bad idea

That's not brown dots, that's black ovals, normally in the top right, at a certain frequency to signal to the projectionist. You still get them...
Well, it seems this was posted, but my thingy on why biscuits crumble was left out! WHY? WHY??? =)

Is this STILL necessary? Have we not got used to the idea of backups yet? REALLY!
