  1. Re:A question for the master (with spoilers) on Review: Matrix: Reloaded · · Score: 2, Interesting

*The matrix is built to allow for the "one" to eventually surface, and become struck with the choice to save everyone, or save no one. When put to this choice the obvious answer is to save everyone, allow the matrix as it was created to continue on and on into infinity. By choosing to save trinity, Neo would be exploiting a flaw which cannot exist, since human nature would not allow for someone to go after something so obviously impossible. If it helps, think of it as a buffer overflow, or logic loop.

*There is no architect to deal with. Remember he's a program, so if he tried to save trinity and then deal with the architect remember that 1) he would not be able to save her because he couldn't move fast enough, however he proves this wrong by moving faster than anyone thought he could (even the architect) Also the architect can only be met during that 314second window, so the window has now closed and neo would never find the backdoor again. Not to mention that the matrix would self destruct by his choosing the door. (see point #1)

*I figure that neo is needed to allow the matrix to function. The ability of the matrix to be "believed" by the 99% who do buy into it has caused a need for the matrix #2 to be built, which included the anomily (the one) and then it was dealt with by causing the one to make the choice he does. (kinda sketchy on this point)

*Zion needs to exist because there has to be a place to put the 1% who reject the matrix or else they would ruin it for everyone else.

*Having neo start a new Zion would allow for a place to put the 1% who need to be unplugged. It gives the humans something to do while they are unknowingly helping the matrix. Furthermore, zion will help to discover the "one" through the oracle continuing to basically lie to whoever is in charge of freeing minds, and telling them the hunt for the one can occurr. which in turn starts the whole process over again.

Ok some of it doesn't make sense but that's my stab at answering these questions. You really have to watch it a few times I think.

I felt it made a lot of sense. The story delves even deeper into what is the matrix (remember www.whatisthematrix.com) and comes out the other end with a great explination for everything we just watched for the last hour and a half (I'll leave the spoilers up to someone else). Just that there are a lot of questions like what happenes to the matrix now? or what happened to it? what happens to zion, etc.

I feel that the cliffhanger is great, keeps me wanting more, and asking what's next. I don't want to give anything else away, but I thought it was funny that every girl I talked to at the theatre left asking a million questions and not understanding and all the guys were just like "damn that was the shit"

What a waste. We have screens here at our regular theatre which are just as wide as the imax screen, so I ended up paying $11 and waiting hours to see what ended up beeing the most letterboxed movie I've ever seen in my life

True this will be "upgraded" but I can't imagine that wouldn't be anything more than Pan&Scan, which on a 5 story screen would probably make me sick anyway. When filmed for the IMAX screen the movie experience can be amazing, however this does not seem like anything more than a gimmick.

Yes there are ways around both of those options however if WEP is giving him trouble then those are two of the best ways to set up his router to ensure more security than simply assuming he is safe.

If someone wants to get in then they will, however the two of these options will get rid of the idiot neighbor who happens to notice an open WAP and figure he doesn't have to pay for Internet usage when Buddy next door is nice enough to share his.

If someone does go through the trouble of spoofing a MAC address, then good for them, they could just as easily crack WEP. Nothing wireless is perfect, however if you limit the wireless network to internet only and are happy with the assumption that your information alone isn't worth the trouble for someone to go through trying to get it then you can happily (albeit ignoranty) assume that you will be fine.

The question was what to do when WEP doesn't work. Not what is a surefire way to secure a wireless network

  11. Use MAC address filtering and Limited IP leases on How Stable is WEP? · · Score: 2, Informative

Whenever I set up a wireless network I make sure the only card allowed to use the network is one that I allow (via mac address filter) Also I make sure that however many computers need IP addresses are the max that I'll lease. That way if you are using the IP no one else will get one leased. WEP... isn't secure anyway so both those options are gonna help.

Well one of the best printer markets to be in is Dot Matrix. Only a handful of companies make them anymore and because of that they can demand hundreds more than an inkjet/cheap laser printer. Also companies like Brother and Okidata know that business HAVE to print checks and reports on them so they'll pay whatever. Its supply and demand. Demand is low, but so is supply so things work out for those small companies. Same thing with audio tapes, no one wants them but if you need them to be made for you you'll pay through the nose over the price of getting CD's pressed since everyone does that now.

Well the article mentions how technology is helping the businesses, but not the consumer. Yes Amazon keeps track of your past purchases, yes if I search for anything there is a list of "suggestions" on the side. Yes I may not see the same prices as you do, but all of this doesnt matter for one reason.

I can go anywhere I want to buy anything amazon has to offer me. The internet allows me to shop around with minimal effort. "Memory sticks are $52 at amazon? Well I saw them at compusa for $42"

I'm not worried about this because I don't shop and expect to get the lowest price unless I do some work. That amount of work has lessend with pricewatch and other deal sites, and this is where I think technology is hurting companies. Its too bad that neither article mentioned this, I would like to see how they plan on combatting it. Remember when "price matching" was all the rage?

I mean, amazon.com's prices are usually very flexible, they flood the market with coupon codes, free shipping, and so what if they charge more to an idiot who is willing to pay it. If they notice you're only buying the things that you see as being cheapest from them they'll realize whats up or their software isn't worth jack.

Really its only a few websites which do the majority of the ads, so not that many sites actually need to be blocked. Anything that makes it through my HOSTS file is usualy on a site that I enjoy (ie. Slashdot) and so I'm not bothered by the ads. One drawback could be that you see an annoying message where the image is supposed to be, however there is software to change that as well.

The hosts file I use can be found here: Kazaa Lite Webpage, you'll have to click on the "supertrick" button on the left, since I'm too lazy to figure how to directly link.

  20. Raises some interesting ideas on Reuters Accused Of Hacking For Typing In URL · · Score: 3, Interesting
While this seems absurd on the surface, I could see a judgement going either way, for mainly two reasons.

First, Reuters' position would probably be that the data was on a public network which was in plain view as long as the url is typed in. I myself do this all the time, why go to www.microsoft.com, click once on support, then click on download when I know the url I want is www.microsoft.com/download. It saves time and trouble. However their "accidental" stumbling upon of this data, which is far more important than anything I'd ever likely find on accident would most likely not fall into the same category. IANAL, but at the same time I would argue that anything they don't want leaked shouldn't be put online anyway, and espically without any security.

However, I can see Intentia International's point of view. What's to stop someone from simply hitting their webserver with every alpha-numeric combination possible. They'll eventually come across the correct one for some piece of information which had gone previously undiscovered because it was to be placed up at a time which was decided by Intentia or any other company for that matter. I could see a moldy old judge siding with them, saying that using "www.intentia.com/~a2eslcf/info/docs/hidden883/fin ancial reports.html" for example would constitute an attempt at placing some level of security on the data for the time being, almost a password. And, scarily enough if they showed a direct relationship between all pages not yet linked and their corresponding URL perhalps a big fat DMCA case might come about if Reuters or someone figured that "~a2eslcf" meant "third quarter" in some sorry 2 bit encryption.
